Dock Foreman

Mustang Freightways
Location: Acheson, AB
Schedule: Primarily evening shift; flexibility for weekends, overtime, and adjusted hours may be required
Reports to: PM Operations Supervisor

About the Role

Mustang Freightways is seeking an experienced, safety-focused Dock Foreman to provide hands-on operational leadership during the PM shift.

The Dock Foreman coordinates daily workflow, assigns and prioritizes work, monitors freight handling and load quality, supports on-time departures, and provides direction to dock employees throughout the shift. This position serves as the day-to-day link between the Lead Hand and the PM Operations Supervisor while remaining available to perform dock work when operationally required.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced dock, warehouse, shipping, receiving, or transportation professional who is ready to take on greater responsibility for shift coordination, employee coaching, safety, documentation, and operational problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate daily dock activities in accordance with established shift priorities.
  • Assign and reprioritize work, balance labour across dock areas, and adjust assignments as freight volumes change.
  • Conduct shift start-up discussions and communicate operational and safety expectations.
  • Monitor inbound and outbound freight for accurate handling, condition, labelling, routing, and placement.
  • Coordinate trailer loading and stripping to support safe, efficient, and on-time linehaul departures.
  • Verify load quality, weight distribution, load securement, and damage-prevention practices.
  • Identify misroutes, shortages, damages, service exceptions, and other operational risks.
  • Monitor productivity, trailer progress, labour utilization, overtime risk, and departure readiness.
  • Ensure employees follow company procedures, safe work practices, and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Coach employees on freight handling, equipment operation, scanning, paperwork, load quality, and work methods.
  • Support the onboarding and practical training of new employees.
  • Coordinate with drivers, dispatch, customer service, terminal operations, and other departments.
  • Maintain accurate shift notes, inspection records, exception documentation, and operational updates.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, power jacks, and other approved equipment when required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe dock environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience in a dock, warehouse, shipping and receiving, or transportation environment.
  • LTL freight experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Hand, trainer, working leader, or in a role involving employee direction is preferred.
  • Knowledge of freight handling, trailer loading, load securement, damage prevention, and dock safety.
  • Valid or company-recognized material-handling equipment certification, or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Working computer skills, including email, operational systems, scanning technology, and basic reporting.
  • Experience with Outlook, Excel, Word, or AS400 is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication, organization, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing operational priorities.
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to teamwork and customer service.

Working Conditions

This position is performed primarily in a freight dock and warehouse environment and includes exposure to moving equipment, vehicle traffic, varying temperatures, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions.

Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, reach, climb, push, pull, and manually handle freight.
  • Lift or move freight weighing up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Handle heavier freight using team-lift methods or mechanical assistance.
  • Regularly operate approved material-handling equipment.
  • Work evenings, weekends, overtime, or adjusted hours when operationally required.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will help ensure:

  • Safe and consistent dock operations.
