Great place to work. Less than appealing diversity in leadership.
Engineer (Employé actuel) –  Toronto, ON5 juillet 2019
WSP leadership allows employees to explore the best in them selves and the work life balance is the best I’ve seen. We are accountable for our work but not having to be chained to set hours.

Employees are given the opportunity to be their best, but are not given the opportunity to advance depending on a “diverse” range of characteristics. Which management surprisingly makes quite obvious.
Points positifs
Flexibility
Points négatifs
Weak, Unsynchronized Leadership

Outstanding work environment with great engineering challenges!
Hydrogeological Assistant (Ancien employé) –  Kitchener, ON29 juin 2019
I spent 20 months of co-op in the Kitchener branch of the company. I progressed consistently towards a positive direction in my work ethic and technical expertise in the field of hydrogeology. My superiors and colleagues were accommodating and outstanding guides. Would recommend this company to anyone in this field of study.
Points positifs
Great work environment - clean, safe, fun, good balance
Points négatifs
Long office hours, though are usually compensated by field work

Terrible corporate culture ignores staff and product quality
Senior Engineer (Ancien employé) –  Vancouver, BC18 juin 2019
This is a company that sells technical expertise, but is severely and critically hobbled by a bloated and relatively uneducated corporate structure that doesn't understand what technical products they sell, and that sacrifices quality for weekly, monthly, and quarterly margins, and do not care about staff except for weekly percentages. Non-technical people with MBAs, limited licensees, and others with no technical background call the shots, and try to do engineering by proxy, often forcing the professionals into sticky situations and ethical dilemmas. Most egregious is when technical staff explain why something is not possible or comes with huge risk, yet managers will make a "business decision" to proceed, and put all responsibility back onto the professional...!

Many good coworkers can be found, but management destroys any pride in your work, as even managers will try to dictate technical reporting in order to please "important" clients. Anyone experienced in consulting at all will know that monstrous chargeabilities come at a cost, cannot be maintained except for very short periods, and that they ebb and flow with the market and economy... but apparently, nobody told corporate that! The result is horrible attrition of experienced technical staff (a must in a technical company), replaced by low-level and under-experienced newbies.

Money is decent, IF you push hard for it... but simply not worth it.

Avoid at all costs.
Points positifs
glizty brochures and websites
Points négatifs
non-technical managers and corporate people, unreasonable chargeability expectations, horrible attrition of experienced staff

A global company
Various IT positions (Ancien employé) –  Calgary, AB27 mai 2019
Working at WSP is a ongoing learning experience. A company that grows through acquisitions as dynamically as WSP will experience difficulties with procedures and policies. All areas of the organization struggle to keep up with the ongoing change which is inevitable.
Points positifs
Gain experience of working for a large corporation
Points négatifs
Vague responsiblites due to accelerated company expansion

Currently working with the Joint Venture for the Centre Block Rehibilitation project and couldn’t be happier. A century project that will surely highlight my career with a company that i am proud to be a part of. Excited for my future with WSP.
Points positifs
Great benefits, SPP and exposure to great technical support and software
Points négatifs
Like any consultant engineering deadlines will press you and long weeks are not uncommon.

Aucune vision à long terme

Corporate values trump engineering
Project Manager (Ancien employé) –  Ontario10 février 2019
Spent several years at MMM (Geomatics dept. in Ontario which was acquired by WSP about 3 years ago. What a demise! From a highly respected professional company with solid management and revered professional peers, to a struggling business quickly losing ground and constantly shifting focus. Currently NOT a people's company!! Financial bottom line driving every single detail. Top-heavy and full of non-production departments and staff. What's worse, a HUGE gap between talking and delivering. Zero incentive for capable, efficient professionals who deliver excellence. Salary around or slightly under the industry average. Constant changes in strategies, departmental structure, work flows, personnel (a high turnover). No training which pertains to the core professional functions. A dangerous trend of assigning management professionals not solely based on qualifications... Let's stop there. There are still pros though - if you manage to work with experienced PMs, participate in complex and exciting engineering projects or get exposed to inter-disciplinary work.
Points positifs
Inter-disciplinary coordination, complex projects
Points négatifs
Corporate greed dictating all

Small office in a very large company
Project Manager (Ancien employé) –  Calgary, AB24 janvier 2019
WSP is a very large international company, but the Calgary office is not large - particularly the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
It was a nice environment. Relaxed, and good people to work with.

Long hours and no life
Survey Assistant (Employé actuel) –  Edmonton, AB29 novembre 2018
Work long hours. Some shift work is way too long for the amount we get paid. The loa is based on the 90s can’t buy a decent meal with what they give us. Some managers don’t know what they are talking about.
Points positifs
Consistent work.
Points négatifs
Don’t get what you’re worth, Raises are only at 2% increase which is 10c, Very very long hours and no personal life

Horrible place to work
project engineer (Ancien employé) –  Calgary, AB30 septembre 2018
The Oil & Gas business unit management are the most incompetent group I have ever seen. They are self serving and use the company to benefit themselves only, and don't care about the employees. Currently there has been a huge departure of employees due to the disgraceful working environment.

Civil Technologist (Ancien employé) –  Grande Prairie, AB25 septembre 2018
Learn and acquired a good experience on management, design and constructions services. The most enjoyable part of my job when i drove to different sites and met engineers and managers. That gave me the chance to discuss and analyse projects progress and other duties

All talk, no action
Engineer (Ancien employé) –  Canada10 septembre 2018
Management poorly trained. Expected to learn management skills without additional training leaving them with a large pool of bad managers. Lots of technically trained engineers with no management skills due to limited senior roles not in management. A lot of big ideas and corporate slogans on being a future focused company but never leads to changes in office which is set up more like a 90s era company than 21st century office. The company is always talking about a bonus system but never implements. No bonuses even at Christmas.

Overall... A large company with too many layers of management and slow or no changes to implement new ideas. A lot of money goes to the top to pay the people not doing the real work who make a lot of pretty slogans without any actual policy changes.

If you are over 50 or 60 don't bother to apply no matter what great experience you have and would be willing to mentor. Geomatics in particular. Millennial culture, millennial office and the attitude to go with it. Yes it was a merger and a very very unkind one.

Great place to learn and keep steady employment.
Surveyor (Employé actuel) –  Red Deer, AB7 juin 2018
I have worked here as a surveyor for a combined 8 years. Learned from the best in the transportation division what it takes to think outside the box during construction. This company respects and places a lot of responsibility in their surveyors, don’t expect to be just pushing buttons. The pay is mediocre but dependable, the benefits are above average. The management is old school and demanding. If you want to work hard and make a steady pay cheque with good benefits, this is a great place to be. The work however is extremely demanding and don’t expect to be home in the summer. Overall, 4/5.
Points positifs
Ability to learn, opportunity to make money through over time, benefits, company vehicle.
Points négatifs
Long hours, office politics, last minute out of town jobs, large corporation baggage.

Performance Driven Company
Manager (Employé actuel) –  Ottawa, ON15 mai 2018
WSP being such a large company is filled with opportunities. This is ideal for a driven and motivated individual wanting to develop their career. The opportunities are based on your performance, you work hard and want to succeed then you will. If you want to sit back and just do your job then that is where you will get comfortable because in a consulting business performance and drive will accelerate your career much further with a company filled with many opportunities.
