Great stable employment with room to advance
Employee (Employé actuel) –  Sundre20 novembre 2019
If you are willing to do more that the average person, advancement is relatively quick. Fast paced production atmosphere, good safety programs, work from -40 to + 35, no layoffs, many jobs are repetitive by nature, you will smell like sawdust at the end of the day.

Acceptable
Process Technologist (Ancien employé) –  Blue Ridge, AB14 septembre 2019
My coworkers did not like the fact that I was not like them and finished a lot of schooling, but then they liked me.

More responsibilities, but no room for advancement from day one.

you can advance quickly or never
Oiler (Employé actuel) –  Edson, AB31 mai 2019
job advancement is based on how management likes you not on job performance or credibility for the position and seniority is thrown out the window, also the lack of regard for safety is ridiculous as apparently safety regulations only apply to employees not anyone in management .

Toxic environment
Maintenance (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd30 mai 2019
Pay is not to bad. Hours are bad for the maintenance end , straight graveyards or weekends. Which means 7 days a week if you want overtime. GM's that want their boots licked all the time and think they know everything. Putting people that have absolutely no experience into positions that they have no business being in just cause the have a 2 year degree in wood processing. Then you just watch the place get run into the ground. Letting people go that really can do thier jobs but are not yes men. If you like drama and office politics give this toxic environment a try. Other then that stay away!!!!

Humble, Down to Earth Experience
Application Support Analyst (Ancien employé) –  Quesnel, BC20 mars 2019
Very Humble and nice people in general. Timid, shy, family like.
Focus a lot on inside than outside traits. Easy work hours, no great stress, provide freedom of schedule during day.
Points positifs
Time freedom
Points négatifs
restructuring, less job role clarity and security off late

Positive Energy
Labourer/Operator (Ancien employé) –  Hinton, AB19 mars 2019
Typical day at work was arriving and doing what you're supposed to do. You have 12 hours to do the job, and go home.

Management is great! I was a summer student there, they are very supportive and encouraging to return to work there again.

The hardest part was beating the night shifts, if you aren't used to this then it will take some getting used to. COFFEE!!
Points positifs
Great salary and benefits
Points négatifs
Long hours

Good work/life balance,good pay/benefits
Quality Control Supervisor (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC10 décembre 2018
Good work/life balance. Perfect for those looking to establish a long term career in the lumber industry. The one drawback is mills are in somewhat remote locations.

Not worth the stress
Maintenance Worker (Ancien employé) –  Edson, AB6 octobre 2018
Great people to work with, not so great to work for. The management has been there so long that they "know" how long every job should take, and will give you a real hard time if it takes any longer. It's difficult to get holidays, even if you ask for them many months in advance. Some of the machines are a little newer and not too bad to work with, while others have been there for a lifetime and seen a lot of neglect. Morale is very low due to how all the workers are treated, suspensions are handed out like candy. They don't have enough employees because people often quit, and not many people want to do overtime because they aren't happy. They have taken away entire positions just to save cost, ie)there were some knifechangers who had that title for many years, who were then demoted to clean-up and the job of changing knives was delegated to sawfilers and maintenance, who are already under staffed and over worked.
Points positifs
Good pay
Points négatifs
High stress, poor management

Good coworkers, but not a family friendly place to work
Team Member (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC9 août 2018
Unorganized upper management who didn't seem to care about about lower team members. West Fraser is a boys club, great for the family men devoted to work. Not a very mom friendly place to work. Expect to have to put your work before your family many times to prove yourself there.
Points positifs
Decent pay, great co-workers
Points négatifs
Long hours, upper management

Terrible management.
Maintenance Worker (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC16 mars 2018
Worked here for two years and the 40 hr work weeks are miniscule. If overtime is wanted you must work 7 days a week which is terrible for life outside of the work place. Job security is great because they dont fire people easily.. which means workig with alot of airheads is a must. Management is absolutely terrible and they treat their employees badly. Can't make a good decision or practical one if it fell out of the sky and hit them in the face.
Machine maintenance is lacking due to patch and go work rather that root cause repair. Which means maintenance and production personell are constantly chasing Thier tails and it's very frustrating. On the upside they have a drastic turnaround rate so advancement in ranks is easily achieved so it's a good starter place but to be used as a stepping stone only.
Overall I would never work for this company again.

Horrible experience truly traumatizing.
Maintenance Worker (Employé actuel) –  Edson, AB13 octobre 2017
Review summary explains it aside from the crew which is amazing nothing else exciting about this place it will suck the life out of you as it did to me no matter how hard I try to be a really good employee in every way they still bring you down and make you feel useless, and have no care for accomodating employees, declining holidays all year because they do not have coverage or changing shifts last minute to avoid paying overtime for coverage, even not allowing to go see family in need because they changed schedule last minute and did not have coverage.
Points positifs
Good Co-workers that keep each other and the place going
Points négatifs
Management, Unorganized chaos, Short staffed/Way over worked, Everything other then co-workers really

Labourer (Ancien employé) –  70 Mile House, BC22 mai 2017
Good place to have a weekend job in grade 12 to get money for post secondary, but not really a place you should stay for the rest of your life unless you have a family or something.

Technical improvements created an ageing work force
Chief Engineer Quesnel Plywood (Ancien employé) –  Quesnel, BC9 juin 2016
The forest industry has been in decline for years. Plywood was being replaced with Oriented strand board. The timber supply was questionable because of Bug infestation. Capital projects were non existing as an available log could be sent to the most profitable mill.
Points positifs
WFT was located in a small community
Points négatifs
The future of the lumber industry was always in doubt.

Good Job Security/Bad Advancement
Operator (Employé actuel) –  Quesnel, BC19 novembre 2015
You are treated as replacable, but they are unlikely to fire you even if you do a bad job (if you are in the union). Just remember to move up in the company you need to work there forever, kiss management's behind and back stab people.

Take care of YOURSELF and your crew because other people don't care about you, only the bottom line.

Salary is good, but don't expect oil patch wages.
