Once you have the needed certifications, the town of Oakville is a great place to teach and lifeguard, and a good place to meet other employees. Shift work during the year with good flexibility and lots of opportunities to move up in the rankings.
On a typical day at work, I would show up with enough time to set up and create a lesson plan. My colleague would usually be teaching a lesson beforehand so he wasn't able to help me out. We were given four lanes to teach thirty kids for one hour followed by a second group of thirty kids for the next hour. Having little to no help, the lessons were very fast-paced and stressful.
Work environment sucks. The higher-ups generally dump all the blame on you for any issues, and you're pretty much stuck doing the majority of work while they and anyone they're friends with do absolutely nothing. Unless you suck up a lot you'll never see advancement or a decent work environment, and even then advancement is unlikely. Work hours seem/are advertised as flexible but in reality tend to not be.
Terrible management, unsafe work environment, no benefits, low wage as Oakville guards aren't unionized
Working for the town of Oakville is a good position. There are many different facilities and placements to choose from so there is always room to explore. There is great teamwork and cooperation between staff.
Free swimming or access to facilities depending on the area you work in
Lots of split shifts!
