Poorly paid

Poorly paid for the type of work. Very violent youth! I would not recommend working here. Managers weren't responsive nor were they supportive of staff.

Terrible

A million percent do NOT recommend working for this company. They are a NIGHTMARE. As the other comments stated. It’s literally clique based. It’s disgusting. These poor kids do not get the proper help they need because the management is SO AWFUL. You only get treated well if you’re in their clique. If not you’ll probably be fired or constantly treated like the dirt on their shoe. Everything will always be your fault not management. Worst company ever.

Points négatifs

As much as you want to make a different this company will drag you down

Do not recommend

No support for staff sometimes even from other staff members. Programming is not created in any type of meaningful way and these youth are not being prepared for their futures. When dealing with their most difficult youth care planning is something of an over site. When staff with experience try to help implement meaningful life skill workshops they are almost always under minded by supervisors. Supervisors are cliche and far to immature and inexperienced to be in the positioning that they are in.

Points positifs

None

Points négatifs

Long hours, no support, poor program implementation

Amazing place to work

I truly enjoyed working for terrace Youth. I gained lots of experience for future jobs. The staff/ management team was amazing and taught me lots throughout my time there. They were very supportive, listen to everything I had to say and incorporated several ideas. I received a tons of training before starting and throughout my there. These trainings were an asset for other jobs later on.

Points positifs

free food on shift

Terrible company

Staff that mistreat the kids in their care and managers who don’t care about the kids or the staff. Almost no budget for food so the kids often go hungry after being fed cheap garbage. Working here means being implicit in the mistreatment of foster kids and the expectation of basically around the clock availability with little pay. And if you’re injured on the job expect to be off with no pay as they aren’t covered by WSIB and due to the high risk nature of the job it happens with regularity.

Points positifs

If you care about the kids you can be there for them and would often be the only one that does care.

Points négatifs

Literally soul sucking.

Avoid

Terrible management, no support offered after a crisis to staff. Management picks favourites based on who he can party with on weekends. If you aren’t in there clique, it’s guaranteed you’ll find out rumours about yourself you didn’t even know (very childish). Groceries were never done on time, which left the children eating Mr. Noodles all day or take out constantly for dinner. They really have no care to further the children in their care or make them follow rules, Terrace wellness only cares about the money coming from each child and then they treat the children according to that. The two bed children walk all over staff and do what they want while the other children are pretty much forgotten about and sit in their rooms all day because there aren’t enough staff for children and main priority is children who take up more than one bed. Many times I watched staff pay for things out of pocket and not get reimbursed. Throughout the pandemic we waited on cheque’s for the 4$ increase which we just received in September for June. They really do not care about their employees in any manner! All they care about is looking good in front of CAS and will get rid of employees for no reason if it fits their agenda. There is zero job security here. I would avoid it at all costs, save your time and dignity and apply somewhere that will appreciate you.

It’s a terrible place

It’s ran like a high school. The way to move up is to just be friends with management. The area supervisor got his position by just crying that he was going to quit if he didn’t get it. Listen to this, the same area manger hires his sister and his best friends who happen to be twins and has them working at the same house. That’s so messed up, twins at the same house. Super inappropriate boundaries, when one twin wasn’t working they would let the kids call the other twin. It was just really messed up and uncomfortable. Rather than fire them, they just move one of them to a different house. One twin is dating his coworker. The area supervisor is dating an employee it’s just really weird place, don’t these people have life’s? Why would you want to work with your siblings and bfs/gfs at a group home, it’s just very odd. Other than that messed up situation the company is poorly ran, pay is low. You are over worked and they don’t care. They will book you like 11pm-11am and then 7am-3pm the next day. How are you ever suppose to sleep? You get hurt on the job often, it’s just a bad place over all. On days off you will be called and emailed like all day.

Points positifs

Kids, some coworkers

stay away from this madhouse!

This review is for the home in Burlington, as this location is "its own island away from the other homes in the Ottawa area" (as per management). you are basically left to fend for yourself, as management could care less about what is truly going on. They play favorites with staff who put in the most work for NO appreciation or compensation! Management had asked a full-timer to finish completing paperwork from months ago for FREE. I have also witnessed a manager verbally putting clients down and embarrassing them, all within earshot or other clients and staff... most of the staff are wonderful, but be careful what you say and to whom. Some staff will act nice to your face, but then stab you in the back. Also, certain characters are VERY possessive of their rapport with the youth and will not allow you to try to build your own rapport. Gossip and rumors are constant here! Lastly, the worst of it is the care the youth are given. This is supposed to be an assessment and receiving home, meaning it is a short-term placement. however some youth end up staying MONTHS (almost 2 years)! They also like to accept (knowingly) very high-risk clients into the program that require in-patient mental health treatment programs and additional staff. Of course, nothing is properly executed and the whole dynamic of the residence falls apart. I definitely do not recommend working here. Please save your sanity and mental health and apply to another organization that will probably treat you and their clients with the respect and dignity that is deserved.

Very Busy Very Disorganized

You need a heart of gold to work here. Can be very fulfilling; however, home management needs improvement and the overall work climate is very disorganized.

Sketchy

Only paid once a month and one person calculates your hours and is usually wrong. Very sketchy and unprofessional the staff is great but management is lacking and pay should be calculated in a more professional manner

Not a great work environment for staff or clients

Agency does not care enough about workers who put in the time and effort to make a difference within the homes. Good employees end up quitting, cycle of burn out and hiring bad/unsafe employees to fill their shoes.

Avoid. Seek employment elsewhere

I’m extremely passionate about helping the vulnerable. Terrace is mostly driven by $. Horrendous management, underpaid employees, staff completely unsupported, and assaults were a regular occurrence. The enormous amount of stress and toll on my mental health was not worth it. Rewarding to help the youth, but the organization needs a wake-up call. High turn over not surprising. Very unfortunate considering what they ‘stand for’.

Helped me advance in my career

Honestly, I used this company as a stepping stone because I heard it prepares you for pretty much any job. I worked at the male group home for about two years. The kids had addiction and aggression issues but they were good kids just trying to make it in life. Management was good and they wrote me letters of reference and even helped me with my applications for the RCMP. Ive probably used them for references 6 or 7 times and each times Ive advanced in my career path. I have since been hired on full time with the RCMP and I dont think I would have been prepared without my group home experience. I also worked for another agency before this and there was really no comparison. Terrace Youth cares for these kids and they do what they can to help them be successful. Initially when I started the hours were a bit crazy, but management implemented a rotational schedule and it balanced out, I never was scheduled for more than 3 days straight. People call in sick so sometimes you get calls requesting to work but I always just said no and It was fine.

Good experience

Typical work day - Giving medications, cooking, bedtime routines, taking kids to appointments, activities each evening, What I learned - Behaviour management, crisis intervention, report writing, workplace culture - Staff gossip, good management, support team, Hardest part of the job- Stressful at times, the population served is high risk, youth are aggressive, suicidal, human trafficking involvement, substance abuse. You have to be prepared for the reality of group care and take the job seriously, The most enjoyable part of the job - I loved going out and looking for kids who are missing, making a difference, teaching new skills, stabilizing a youth and really helping them do better in life.

Good quality of care to the kids

All things considering its a decent place to work, group home work is draining regardless, but this agency actually cares about kids and it helped be develop my path with my career. I got a bunch of training working here and I have nothing but respect for the management supervisors and staff, they work hard to do what they can in a broken system.

Good place to start out

Job is defiantly stressful as all child and youth worker jobs are, I read the negative reviews and honestly I think they are written by staff who were fired for being a bad employee, never had any issues,

Good experience

I learned a lot while working at TYRS. They provided ongoing training in various areas such as Plan of care writing. Incident reports, medication administration, human trafficking seminar, autism, behavioural interventions, TCI every six months and had completed 10 orientation shifts prior to working, some people did mention they had less orientation shifts but that was based on experience and level of comfort. Management was supportive and on call was always available. I like the company had individual crisis management plans that gave specific instructions for staff to intervene. All this experience really helped me gain knowledge and build up my resume. I worked shift work so evenings and every second weekend, I had a small child at home so it worked as I got to save on day care being my bf would stay home with my child at night.

Great stepping stone for Police Foundations and RCMP

These negative reviews are seriously wrong. Worked at Terrace youth for 3 years, saw a lot of staff come and go. The angry ones left for one reason, they weren't cut out for this line of work and were not aligned with the foundation of this killer company!! Best Group Home agency I have worked for. My managers wrote me amazing reference letters and I just got my dream job. This company wants you to succeed and will help you get there, but you need to do the work.

Fast paced, never boring,

This company is passionate about the kids cared for. Best training I have had. Easy to reach the higher ups. Outside of the box thinking and open to creative planning. Company family days are planned for all the kids. Management comes and plays along, not too good to get their hands dirty and join in! Biggest challenge is staff turn over. If you want to be challenged, busy at work, get to do fun stuff with the kids you will be the most successful. Take kids tot he gym, water parks, extreme trampoline, swimming, tobogganing ect. The more active staff are my favorite staff to work with. Too many entitled millenials want a desk job, this isnt it.We need more staff who will spend their shift out staying busy.

Very rewarding and opportunity for skill development

Really enjoyed my time at Terrace, I worked as a full time lead and learned so much. Management met with me several times to address my goals and help me move up in the company. There is a high turn over mainly because its a stressful environment, caring for kids can be overwhelming and it takes the right kind of skill set to properly care for them. Ive also worked at two other group home agencies before Terrace and Terrace is absolutely run better. The kids are safe and well taken care of.
