So I techinically didn't work directly for Sun Life, but I worked for a Financial Advisor, on site, who is contracted by Sun Life. That still meant that I was subject to Sun Life rules, training and standards. However, despite the accessibility training, I could not actually get help from the company when I was faced with ableism, abuse and manipulation. I wasyelled at, not listened to, manipulated, had my job threatened if I didn't get better but if not promised a raise. Despite all of that, there was no one I could ask for help. The lack of accountability is appalling. When I eventually quit due to mental health concerns due to the treatment of my boss, instead of denying me support, EI actually asked why I stayed for so long. It was a nightmare. At the same time, Head Office downsized and fired several of our management staff to restructure and made everything more complicated and requiring support from HO or from a resource facilitator in Thunder Bay. Oh, and because my salary didn't come from Sun Life, I had to fight my advisor for a year of Stat pay and vacation pay.
Some free lunches
yelling, abuse, lack of accountability, lack of leadership, centralised leadership structure
I'm currently an assistant to a financial advisor, so I mainly focus on keeping her organized, booking meetings, filing, answering calls, etc. Sun Life is pretty fast paced and will keep you on your toes.
Lots of knowledge to gain
Lots of work

Sunlife allowed me to get a glimpse of how to work in a finance based company. I didn't know much but this experience really helped me learn a lot and allowed me to use some of that knowledge in my work and in the real world.
Working along side one of the top earning advisors in Canada I learned how to run a book of business. I learned how to handle satisfied clients and how to deal with upset clients. I learned how to make daily calls and achieve daily and weekly goals. We set a very high standard for ourselves and were able to achieve them regularly.
Learned how to opperate the phone, learned how to sit in meetings with clients.
Not the industry I want to see myself work in
Great flexible and goal oriented place to work. I have learned to prioritize, how to find potential in-house sales accounts, problem solving, and keeping organized. The work environment is very positive, open to trying new approaches and changes and testing them. The branch has a fantastic, and welcoming cultural environment.
