This is a standard government job - very inefficiently run, toxic work environment. Promotion only happens in two cases: 1: you’re very good friends with upper management 2: you have a PERFECT work record (no absences, no lates) They pretend to care about your mental health but then penalize you if you take time for it. There is a massive disconnect between management and interviewers. Upper management does not use common sense when creating programs and surveys. They don’t take into account that real people have to make these calls and don’t take any of our insight or advice and then complain when we can’t reach target or when people complain about us. Good way to get your foot in the door
It took almost 2 months from signing my offer to get started. Terrible communication. No one had a clue what was going on. I was hired for one job and instantly put on another one. I told them multiple times only weekdays and they told me I had to do evenings and weekends 2 weeks in to the job, as they were changing my position again. I was told it'd be a minimum of 30 hours a week daytimes and was given 15 straight days off to start February, 3 weeks in to the job, which I quit 2 other jobs for. Ridiculously bad management and no one does anything to help you. Job is awful too. Pay is decent but not enough hours and part time so no benefits or anything. Look elsewhere.
I can't comment working on Statistics Canada for other jobs but I can on when it comes to the job we're doing for Contact Tracing.A typical day starts with either reaching out for the first time, at the mid-way point, or on their final day of exposure to contacts that have likely already spoken to their local public health unit first so we are just doing the actual follow up. Management clearly hasn't thought through the process of the script we are reading at all. There are simply too many parts that don't make sense.For example, none of the scripts are modified when we are speaking to someone else on behalf of the contact in question. On our final day call, when they are on their last day of isolation we have to read them all the same verbiage about getting tested and ask them if they know the same thing as on Day 1 if they know where their nearest assessment centre is to get tested, etc.? This leads to so many people asking if they need to get another test, or makes them go for another test when they will likely be turned away, I think since they're on their final day. And we still call them even if the self-isolation period is over and of course, the script doesn't change -- it still keeps talking about getting tested "while you're under self-isolation" and "monitoring for symptoms while you're under your self-isolation" when it's over. I really feel like this was put together way too quickly and wasn't thought through well. I get sometimes things aren't perfect in the beginning but clearly this hasn't been updated. To be successful while working for Statistics Canada Census, you have to be “all in” to tough it to the end. It was a perfect fit for me. Loved the goals and challenge!
Freedom to work at your own pace. Excellent support from management.
Always being on call for the duration of the project.

Management is incompetent and does not care about their employees. They constantly try to break agreements with their employees. They will change your schedule without asking if you are available and will schedule you against your availability. If management doesn't like you, good luck getting any time off, even if you give them plenty of notice. They monitor your work closely and don't encourage any socialising, stress breaks, or even bathroom breaks (though they will allow it). Good luck getting answers on your pay too. Worst department of the government to work.
Good for flexibility of schedule and federal benifits. Motivation and direction are lacking, but management will find scapegoats if something goes wrong. Numerous attempts to harass interviewers into resigning, including threats about the jail time involved in confidentiality issues. Remote work and little training ongoing.

Very structured and organized but to the detriment of employees. StatsCan runs like a well tuned car for the most part, but with some growing pains. The employees are treated like a herd of cattle doing monotonous work day in and out. And it's almost like there is a cast system you would see in India; management won't acknowledge you unless you have a degree or belong to their cast.
right Now there is a shortage of hrs but when the surveys pick back up I love the hours including evenings and weekends.
I have been employed at Stats Can in Sturgeon falls now for little over a year and I still enjoy going into work best place of employment. Management has been helpful and I have had a positive experience. The work at first seems like there’s a lot to remember but it all smooths out after the first couple days. Only con to working here is job security I feel like we could have had a bit more notice to such a large decrease in hours felt kinda suddenly
Able to work from home. Must have good time management as you are responsible to meet the criteria that they have laid out. Travel around area and meet new people.

Management, head office, lack of support, toxic work environment
During census crew leaders were expected to be available at all times, No down time. Not great pay for how many hours go into the work. Hard to maintain good staff who are willing to get the work done. Hard time contacting management to ensure problems were solved.
Decent benefits but money is not enough for the stress of job. Completing surveys with unwilling participants and pressure to harassing the till they do complete.

The work is easy, pay is decent and benefits are good HOWEVER it's not worth it considering everything else. You are forced to bother people 3-4 times a day on survey's they don't want to do (they're voluntary) and the ones that agree to participate only do it because they're fed up with the amount of calls they receive. Some survey's can last up to an hour which I find is ridiculous. You HAVE to work 5 times a week (you have no choice) and you have to work the entire shift. In addition to that, you have managers who really love to micromanage you and that gets really annoying. You're also confined to a cubicle that's dirty and grey. There is uncertainty with this position as you are on contracts and there is not always work available. IF you are selected for work, you need to show up for training, which, if you cannot make it, you won't be scheduled to work at all since you missed training.

The friendship between coworkers was what made it worth it to stay there. The management is poor, morale is low because of the environment created by management who cares only about the end numbers. Decent wages but a very inconsistent schedule without flexibility for the most part. Good place for a short term but not much more
