Staples is good company to work for if you are starting out your career. It is a company driven by processes and results. You will get all the tools needed in order to perform your duties.

Stressful and underpaid but the best people to work with.

I was with Staples for about 6 years. In that time I worked at 2 of the stores. I was a cashier, aisles associate, technology associate and a technician, all without a lay raise. I was working for minimum wage the whole time. The companie's equipment barely works and is very out dated, there is next to no training and moving up in the company is a joke. But I worked with amazing people. I deem working there worth it just for the people. But it should very much be a temporary job. Its not a bad job to start with, there are definitely worse options but don't expect amazing pay. Or for the job to be fair.

New management sucks

Corporate really needs to get out of the stores business, low hours, not enough staff, low pay, but good benefits. Management is horrible, Overall a great job for people just starting out or are still in school.

Unfair

I was caring for my mother, I was forced to work weekend. Ultimately I was given a choice to give the hours they wanted or leave. They even wrote the wrong reason in my employement record saying it was mutual, when it wasn't. After dealing with personal issues I had notify the ceo of major flaws that had happen at store levels, i was pushed out of the compagny for no good reason.

No customer service skills don't apply

The management at Corporate has no clue what happens at store level. Corporate says they support the staff but they don't its all about the money. No one is ever held accountable for their actions. Don't believe them when they tell you that you can advance through the ranks in this company, simply not true.

Great Teamwork, offering tech services.

Avoid At All Costs

Staples has spent the last several years cutting costs at the expense of quality of life for their employees, especially management. I worked a minimum of 50-60 hours per week, something that is not at all uncommon for most Staples managers. The overtime is unpaid, and no lieu time was given. I worked in a store that operated 16 hours a day with only myself and the general manager, meaning we never worked together. The third management position was intentionally left unfilled by the Divisional Manager, seemingly to reduce operating costs. My manager was unable to observe my performance to provide me with coaching, and I was unable to observe how he performed his job. This created a situation in which I felt unable to grow into a new position with the company. Many of the managers I knew had no work/life balance, and health problems were rampant. In my exit interview, the HR rep I spoke with was completely unsurprised at my reasons for leaving (overwork, mainly) and said that the HR department had been hearing the same thing a lot lately. I was at least the 9th manager in Toronto to quit that year. The work itself might have been okay had anyone been given the resources they needed to succeed. Instead, executive management policies left store management and associates alike feeling stressed, unappreciated, and taken advantage of.

Attention All Drivers...Look Elsewhere

HR won't even talk to you until they have a copy of an up-to-date Driver's Abstract, which is immediately asking for private/personal information before you even have your first chance to ask questions about whether or not you're even interested in the position. Look elsewhere.

Good place to work

Amazing Staff

The staff at any Staples I have had the pleasure of working in, are amazing! The management are great and really listen to your needs. The head office could take some notes... For the jobs you are required to do, the pay could be better.

I recommend working with Staples!!

Working with staples is an add to your resume and experience as it is a big company to start with in Canada. I have learnt alot from the team. We are like brothers and sister and everyone one is helping the other to understand the whole process. It is my pleasure to work there.

No room for advancement

I worked as a lead hand running a department for 8 years and never promoted even though I was " being groomed". Its easy to remain stagnant in your role. There was no opportunity to grow or advancement. I was happy to leave under the current management.

Look elsewhere

When I first started at staples, it really wasn’t that bad. The manager was a little strict, but the store I was at was in a bad state, and she did what she had to in order to improve the store. Then, after about two months working there (she was hired mere days before she hired me), she was sent to a different staples location, supposedly because she had done so well at ours. The next manager we got was awful. She had NO management experience and practically ran the store into the ground. Myself and many fellow employees (including two supervisors) submitted negative reviews of her to head office, as she was constantly having to send people home mid-shift, cut back on hours etc. Of good employees because the store was doing so poorly financially, but head office did nothing. She was also mean to employees, not in a you-need-to-work-harder way, but in a personal way: when I finally resigned due to stress and lack of hours, she said “oh good, you’re finally quitting.” She also drove away MANY customers by harassing them, and I had customers complain to me, a cashier, about my manager on almost a daily basis. Head office doesn’t care about any of its employees, and for what is likely to be a minimum wage job, it’s just not worth it.

Customer Service Representative

The store gives only 1 or 2 days a week. They hire a lot of students and give everyone only 5 - 10 h a week. The schedule have to be flexible, no stable work days. This is the hardest - not stable hours and not much. Hard to find another job for other days you never know what day you will be in Staples. Otherwise, management is good

Good job but no commission

The job was pretty simple to be honest. As long as you have a decent knowledge about technology and a good sales attitude you will get decent numbers. The down side is there is no commission which results in no real reason to sell

Not the most organized place to work

Working at Staples will feel like a chore once you get past training.TRAINING: Training itself, is a lot to take in but the trainer does try to add some fun to it. It is nerve racking the first time you deal with customers and are not 100% sure how to run the systems, but they do have individuals there to help you.After the first part of training is done, you are on the floor taking calls which is pretty straight forward but can get very repetitive.After a few weeks, you go back to training for Print and Marketing (Staples Copy & Print) which is more complicated. You are only able to see very basic information about customers orders. Anything more complex, you will need to reach out to CSHD (Customer Service Help Desk)Once training is done you are somewhat on your own (at least it will feel that way at the start) but the managers and supervisors are there at the start (If they tell you something once remember it, they will get annoyed if you repeat inquiries more than twice)SHIFTS: Beware of shifts sometimes (Hours are 7:30am - 8pm) if you get multiple consecutive shifts, email your manager with the inquiryPAY: Pay is not the greatest (after taxes approx $13.50 - $14.00 an hour) sometimes it does not seem worth it for the volume of calls you may take in a day. Calls at times seem like they do not stop (You WILL feel like you are alone on phones even though management says you are not)WORK/LIFE BALANCE: Is average at best, especially if you have an early shift. Beware, if you have a shift from 11:30am - 8pm, the work life balance combo goes out the window, and all -
