STAPLES in Saskatoon was a good place to work. The managers were pretty reasonable and I got along well with my coworkers. Sometimes it could be stressful, especially when dealing with impatient or irascible customers, or during BTS (Back to School) season. Also the wages weren't great--they started me at just about minimum wage from what I remember. But as I was only working part-time while going to school that was fine for me.
Points positifs
Good coworkers, managers, generally fun work
Points négatifs
Weird hours, pay wasn't great

I was with Staples for about 6 years. In that time I worked at 2 of the stores. I was a cashier, aisles associate, technology associate and a technician, all without a lay raise. I was working for minimum wage the whole time. The companie's equipment barely works and is very out dated, there is next to no training and moving up in the company is a joke. But I worked with amazing people. I deem working there worth it just for the people. But it should very much be a temporary job. Its not a bad job to start with, there are definitely worse options but don't expect amazing pay. Or for the job to be fair.
Points positifs
Amazing staff.
Points négatifs
Pay is a joke.

Corporate really needs to get out of the stores business, low hours, not enough staff, low pay, but good benefits. Management is horrible,
Overall a great job for people just starting out or are still in school.
Points positifs
freindly staff, benefits
Points négatifs

The staff at any Staples I have had the pleasure of working in, are amazing! The management are great and really listen to your needs. The head office could take some notes... For the jobs you are required to do, the pay could be better.

The store gives only 1 or 2 days a week. They hire a lot of students and give everyone only 5 - 10 h a week. The schedule have to be flexible, no stable work days. This is the hardest - not stable hours and not much. Hard to find another job for other days you never know what day you will be in Staples. Otherwise, management is good

The job was pretty simple to be honest. As long as you have a decent knowledge about technology and a good sales attitude you will get decent numbers. The down side is there is no commission which results in no real reason to sell
Points négatifs
no commission

Working at Staples will feel like a chore once you get past training.

TRAINING:

Training itself, is a lot to take in but the trainer does try to add some fun to it. It is nerve racking the first time you deal with customers and are not 100% sure how to run the systems, but they do have individuals there to help you.

After the first part of training is done, you are on the floor taking calls which is pretty straight forward but can get very repetitive.

After a few weeks, you go back to training for Print and Marketing (Staples Copy & Print) which is more complicated. You are only able to see very basic information about customers orders. Anything more complex, you will need to reach out to CSHD (Customer Service Help Desk)

Once training is done you are somewhat on your own (at least it will feel that way at the start) but the managers and supervisors are there at the start (If they tell you something once remember it, they will get annoyed if you repeat inquiries more than twice)

SHIFTS: Beware of shifts sometimes (Hours are 7:30am - 8pm) if you get multiple consecutive shifts, email your manager with the inquiry

PAY: Pay is not the greatest (after taxes approx $13.50 - $14.00 an hour) sometimes it does not seem worth it for the volume of calls you may take in a day. Calls at times seem like they do not stop (You WILL feel like you are alone on phones even though management says you are not)

WORK/LIFE BALANCE: Is average at best, especially if you have an early shift. Beware, if you have a shift from 11:30am - 8pm, the work life balance combo goes out the window, and all

I was a Business Development Manager for 2 years. All territories to meet same KPI #s regardless of potential. Competition in this area was extreme. You also compete with 2 other Staples divisions. Pay and benefits are decent but if you can’t meet KPI your out in 3 months or so. Management is good they do seem to empathize but will make decisions that can really adversely effect your business.
Points positifs
Pay, Team, morale
Points négatifs
Stressful, Competitive, helplessness

Customer service
The few managers seem to ruin the experience for everyone else

Not a great place to work if you want to feel valued as an employee

Benefits are good, Retail is changing , but not for the better.
No overtime available due to COVID but occasionally when needed

Job security if you do what your job description asks you to do

Have to be able to have a “strong” backbone when it comes to customers who think they can treat you badly. Being able to smile and have the customer is always right attitude..
Points positifs
Occasional lunches, a few parties ie Christmas ..
Points négatifs
Speaking the truth gets you nowhere

Points positifs
Possibilités d'avancements, On ne s'ennuie jamais
Points négatifs
Salaire, Charge de travail (+ en +), Communication, équilibre vie/famille, augmentation annuelle risible

Regardless of how young and fit you are, or how much time you have, don't believe HR when they tell you that you'll only be working 8-hour shifts.

Theirs a reason they ask you if you have flexible hours between 6am and 6pm. Unless theirs unforeseen circumstances, you don't return to the depot until your truck is empty, which on average is anywhere between 9-1/2 to 11 hours per day. Add bad weather into the mix and kiss your life goodbye.

50~ish stops per day, which is ridiculous for the amount of heavy lifting involved; manly boxes of paper, sometimes office furniture. Zero work/life balance, except for having weekends off.

Starting wage of $17 an hour. Horrible pay and increase structure. Anything less than $20 an hour is less than a living wage.

If you're young and naive, knock yourself out. If you're over 25 or have a family, look elsewhere.

The company does not care about you, and might remove some benefits if they stand to gain. My general manager was very good, but some other managers range from excellent to terrible, and that might affect your experience.
You don't make commission on your tech sales, and they tell everyone that, but they still require you to upsell a lot and pressure you into doing it. That kind of defeats the purpose of saying that your employees are not greedy salesmen, because they most definitely are

What began as a great experience (entirely thanks to a great managerial team) devolved quickly with managerial changes that eventually saw our GM changed for a former manager of ours that cherry-picked who he liked and what work he did and who refused to help our very busy and often swamped Copy Center. It got to the point that on some weekends, our sole cashier came to help whenever she could and although I tried every time, I always ended up giving up on calling for help on the store-wide speakers because he was supposed to be my help but he never ever came. Later, I was nearly cheated out of bereavement leave by another manager and as a GM, he brushed away my formal complaint and sided with the manager, to whom I had given multiple chances to tell me the truth. That manager insisted that the time would be taken from my meager vacation time when the official HR website clearly stated that I was allowed 3 paid days of bereavement leave. In fact, the only reason I wasn't screwed over was thanks to one amazing and trustworthy manager who, at the time, managed our paychecks. Add to that the minimum wage salary, few opportunities and only managerial ones to be found, nearly impossible to get the status required to get benefits... While I was there, I saw the store become more and more understaffed and transfer to a managerial team led by yes-men who didn't care about the employees. What started as a great team eventually became a spinning door with great employees quitting en masse. Staples just became a really bad place to work that could no longer justify the horrible salary - plus...

The does not appreciate the talent and doesnot help for growth with in the company. If they hire new talent, they would pay more but not to a loyal company employee. Management not cooperative. Work culture is good, you will enjoy working with colleagues. Company does not offer great benefits compared to other similar retailers.

Just as the title says, if your manager is great: you will have an amazing job and vice-versa.
Hope that you don't have to face the situation like coronavirus and stuff or you will soon see the bad side of the upper management, who kinda suck at communication with employees and benefits as well.

Typical day:

1-You enter the sales floor.

2- It is super slow --> you do all extra tasks like cleaning the isles and stuff.

It gets busy --> Now you have to handle 2 customers at once (not stressful though).

3- Some associates can be toxic, but it is 1/10 and hence no issues.

4- Most enjoyable part: When you upsell (relevant products) and all goes well.

5- Management: My General manager is great, Upper management: Cant' say much good about those guys (Neutral to bad).

Good company with lots of benefits and I like the environment and staff. They treat everyone as family. Everyone is fair and the salary given are also fair.
