I worked here in high school. I made a lot of friends and gained many valuable experiences. They were always flexible when it came to time-off and working around students extra curriculars.

Morning starts off with an uninspired meeting run by one of the half witted managers. No praise for anybody who had a good day in sales just all about the "team" where next to nobody puts in a good effort. Thunder bay has been run by the absolute worst two managers in history. They are both liars and pathetic human beings. There is no work culture at Staples actually the less you do the better the managers only ride the sales associates who actually pull their weight. They love International students because of the wage subsidy the Canadian tax payers pay to cover part of there income. The best part was telling the managers to fist themselves and hope the store gets closed.

Working at staples was a feel good job. I loved helping people find what they wanted. A few months into working I was put into the technology portion where I knew absolutely nothing. I was never properly trained, so I had to teach myself. Supervisors were usually never to be seen if I had questions, they only butted in if I was in the process of a big sale where they would harass the customer on adding onto the already big sale. This would usually tick off the customer and ruin their whole experience. If you’re not going to properly train me, don’t come behind me and try to take over my sale. However, this doesn’t matter because there is not commission on sales ( no clue why ). After a year, I was awarded with a insane 15 cent raise, which awarded all my hard work. 15 cents does not make a difference, and is not what will make an employee want to stay. Overall, I had a decent experience working at staples, but management needs to change. Not saying all managers and supervisors were terrible, because I had a good relationship with a few, but to the others...

Staples is transforming, but at a very slow pace, and with no inclusion of the employee experience in the mix. Tasks are continually added and labour continually cut back.

Min wage job. You can never do well enough in their eyes to substantiate a raise. Hours all over the place so working in a second job is impossible. Never use them for a reference most management will give you a bad reference just to be spiteful.

Everything is great except salary is a limited one with steps. If you reached step 5 which is 18:50$,there is no chance that salary will be raised after this. No promotions etc. After all its great place with good management and nice people

I learned a lot from staples. It comes in professional category. Everyday there was a new challenge to achieve and you will get rewarded for that. Management is doing great, to make the store growing. They always appreciate for your efforts. Salary is low.

Company is a great place to start out as a first job. Advancement through the company can be an added bonus, but you usually have to fall into a good situation where they promote due to someone leaving the company or moving up themselves. You can only climb the ladder so far despite years of service.

I recommend this as a great first or second job as you get a whole bunch of learning and experience from this job. In terms of retail one thing that I have learned is use this a training ground, sharpen skills and really dive deep on how the store works by asking questions and creating connections throughout the store If you work hard you will be noticed so really give it your best if you want more experience I would NOT recommend this as a job to survive off of. The work/life balance is somewhat difficult to maintain and the pay seems to be very minimal for the amount of work done,

Staples was a very structured company with great supportive head office.Unfortunately due to online purchase popularity in recent years they started to struggle financially that followed by unrealistic expectations and extreme pressure on stores and management team.They made many changes to stay afloat but most of them had negative impact on the store moral including changing store structure and eliminating a few key positions, promoting unqualified associates to supervisor position with lot of power and no accountability. At the same time they delighted all other responsibilities to managers whom already had a lot on their plate.This change caused lots of problems for managers and destroyed team work spirit in the stores.Managers have no control over associates to the extent that they even can't ask an associate or superior for example working in the Tech. Department merchandise since it's not part of their job any more, that left the the store with over 30 associates to be filled,priced and maintained by 2 to 3 associates only. Managers have to work around 45 to 50 hours per week in the store just to catch up and do all other duties including writing associate reviews,monthly business plan, reading and responding to lot of emails on their time off and if raised any concerns or asked for help the only answer you get is that you are a manager and need to manage your time also you are not allowed to punch in or out. The head office also became very unresponsive to store requests,before they were obligated to responde in 24 hours and find a solution in 3 days,that doesn't exist - plus...

You will not advance here. Extremely poor pay for the excessive workload and responsibility. Without proper training, the expectation is that you will work in every department in the store. You can be selling a computer one minute and then scrubbing the toilet the next....not even joking as janitorial duties are now part of the new “working and learning company”. You will be written up for not meeting their “goals”.....selling overpriced services smart people won’t pay for. Unqualified management and high turnover rates. Management talks badly about employees behind their backs to other employees, creating a toxic work environment. You can get a good job anywhere else for the same pay and a lot less headaches. Avoid this company because in spite of what they tell you, they really don’t care about their employees at all. They operate in terms of “if you don’t like it, there’s the door”.
