Loved the people I worked with, The company itself... not so much

I really enjoyed working with the staff at my brach of Staples. We were at a flagship store so management was for the most part young, forward thinking and likeable. However, the company policies in general sucked. Higher ups (past general manager) were inflexible with their demands for production, even during a pandemic. I went from loving the work I did as a copy associate to hating going to work every day. The pay is god awful as well. Minimum wage, and the requirements of the job kept increasing. The turnover rate is incredibly high, so that tells you all you need to know.

Loved the people, not the company.

I had amazing coworkers, and usually good management. However, the company itself doesn't care much for their employees, and the pay is very low considering the expectations - management was usually nice, but limited in what they could do to help/support us. We were either understaffed or overstaffed, which led to employees staying way after close to clean up and prepare for the next day (particularly for supervisors and managers), or part-time employees only working one shift a week. However, I liked the work I did in the print centre, and personally found it pretty fun. Honestly, its a pretty good place for a part-time or temporary job, but not really worth trying to move up in the company if you value spending time with friends and family.

Don’t waste your time/effort

I have been working for Staples for over 15 years! The company has changed in the last 3 years after being purchased by Sycamore. No longer do they care about people! It is all about whether the RVP likes you, she has issues with anyone who has been around 10 years+. Work long hours and not appreciated. The retail managers have not received increase in 2019 or 2020, last year due to poor results and min wage increases this year due to Covid. 2021 will probably be another reason given by HR and Operations. The company needs to give its head a shake as they have been really good at driving away some really good managers over the last couple of years, perhaps that is the goal? If you want to be managed under a microscope and feel stressed out than this is the place for you! They no longer care about people, new philosophy is if you don’t like it leave we can replace you!

Productive and full of activities

Over all the experience was good. The sub ordinates were rude with the junior staff and share less knowledge with them. Where else, the senior management were cooperative but at end they would definitely listen to their permanent staff

Avoid At All Costs

Staples has spent the last several years cutting costs at the expense of quality of life for their employees, especially management. I worked a minimum of 50-60 hours per week, something that is not at all uncommon for most Staples managers. The overtime is unpaid, and no lieu time was given. I worked in a store that operated 16 hours a day with only myself and the general manager, meaning we never worked together. The third management position was intentionally left unfilled by the Divisional Manager, seemingly to reduce operating costs. My manager was unable to observe my performance to provide me with coaching, and I was unable to observe how he performed his job. This created a situation in which I felt unable to grow into a new position with the company. Many of the managers I knew had no work/life balance, and health problems were rampant. In my exit interview, the HR rep I spoke with was completely unsurprised at my reasons for leaving (overwork, mainly) and said that the HR department had been hearing the same thing a lot lately. I was at least the 9th manager in Toronto to quit that year. The work itself might have been okay had anyone been given the resources they needed to succeed. Instead, executive management policies left store management and associates alike feeling stressed, unappreciated, and taken advantage of.

The stock picker is always fun

Staples is a fun place to work at. All staff members are super chill and will answer any questions you chuck at them. The most enjoyable part of staples is when you get to release co2 from exchanged emptied soda-stream canisters and laugh at your coworkers that are jealous, or putting clearance stickers/labels on products.

Terrible Workplace

Staples is a terrible company. Lowest pay possible, no advancement. Employees who worked at Staples for more than 10 years were only getting paid a couple of dollars more than minimum wage. I would not recommend this company.

Stressful invironment - no goal at all

Easy hire, and easy fire, Incompact management team, No goals or any measure systems at all, They mange based on friends, not on how you do your job, It was the worst job I ever had in my work, I am glad that I left,

Great workplace with very supportive co-workers

I worked at Staples many years ago, for approximately 2 years. Overall it was good. If you work hard and meet target, there are some decent pay bonuses. They do regional contests regularly. It's a great job if you like people, and know your product. My only complaint is that our store went through 2 store managers in a little over a year. This created some instability as systems and procedures were regularly being changed.

Stimulating environment with team and individual duties

Stimulating team cooperation between all departments (service, tech, aisles, and copy). On occasion required to assist in other departments, resulting in the acquiring of various skills/knowledge from each. Management consideration for balance of school and work load is very understanding and accommodating. Constant customer exposure can be draining but for the most part rewarding encountering and connecting with new individuals. Goals are set before a day of work begins, which also attributes to the rewarding factor.

Difficult place to work at copy centre

Staples had been difficult for all the jobs I have worked for. Although there was support from managers, supervisors of the copy centre not approachable. They always had problems understanding a person. They do not treat employees properly. Staples needs to switch its copy centre supervisors and hire better people with empathy. People working there deserve respect. This is on top of all the filth people have to take from the annoying customers because they hire less production team to produce work, which means people at the front are answerable to the customers, and not the production team that had to get work done because they are always short-staffed. This is because of the way people are treated at the copy centre at Staples. Many people just quit their jobs due to lack of respect, lack of pay and lack of appreciation for the amount of work there is.

fun workplace

Great people i worked with although management was very judgmental and hard on a people. Overall i enjoyed the atmosphere and going experiences in different places like customer services and cashier. It may be my first job but it taught me a lot.

General retail environment

Day at work included stocking and customer assistance, learned a lot about current technology, management was very linear, associates were very fun to work with.

Bad bully management

Worst place ever , clicks , Manager is a back stabber. Throws everyone under the bus . Has a Mean Woman’s Club . President, Vice , Secretary, and they will bad mouth and throw people under the bus . Let President tries to get people in trouble every day.Really tired of games .
