A lot of your hours will be on night shifts. That’s where all the hours are it’s not unionized there’s no sense of job security, there is a lot of document writing they are very particular with allot repeated and done in a old style book, you can’t build relationships with your clients because there always in and out of the homes in transitional housing. No benefits and your usually sitting in the relief position

Worked here as an Employment Consultant. Great service plans, management backs you up. Could not fit into the social work aspect of the job but overall a fantastic place to learn about Canadian Policies and Procedures

Perks are great, great staff and the clients is what keeps the place going. Schedule is somewhat flexible and management are exceptionally great and friendly. Great place to work!

This place is run by a management that see workers as disposable.
Working there means dealing with management that is so inconsistent in their decisions to a level that effect the mental well being of the already over worked and under paid staff.

Relief training hours are great, for the first month or two you are working full time and then after training and a month ish after your hours drop. Going from 40 hours a week to 10.

For my current position, I went to school and volunteered and I feel like my hard work paid off. I work with clients who struggle with addiction and I have extremely supportive manager and co-workers.

Excellent benefit package. Lots of room for growth. Very diverse work force. Workplace culture very safety oriented. The hardest part of the job was keeping up to the agency growth

It was a great organization that had pretty good benefits and a decent starting wage. Management to me were pretty good, always got along with them. I had a great time with my co-workers and always were positive with me and the clients.

They dont respect employees who are part time when allocating shifts. They will go on hiring spurts hiring dozens and dozens of part time employees all while taking away shifts from the part time employees they currently have. When complained to management the response is your relief staff we are not obligated to give you shifts.

Most hires don't stay for more than a couple of months. HR just keeps filling positions with young graduates that eventually realize there are far better opportunities elsewhere.

Veteran staff treat casual/PT/relief workers terribly.


Very inexperienced management -- to a shocking extent.

I am a counsellor for a Outpatient 6-week Day Treatment Program. A typical day would come into work get things set up for the client's, food and drink, and get material ready for the day's session. I prepare for a 1:1 session with a client if it is scheduled for that day. Management is incredible at St. Leonard's. You have opportunity to advance and grow within the company, depending on what role you are looking to advance in. I really enjoy my job, and the services we offer at St. Leonard's Day Treatment Program. We have a great team of counsellors and support workers that do an amazing job every day, and leave with a smile on our faces. My job does not feel like work, it is fun and also it is important service we provide for people trying to get their life back, and learn how to focus more on day to day instead of getting their next fix or drink. Change is a process, it takes time, hard work, and practice!!!

A typical day as a counselor is very busy. The staff are fantastic and its a great place to work although the pay is not great. The health benefits are great. The rate of pay is not. There is a lot of room for advancement and learning which is awesome.

At St. Leonards Community services Youth resource centre you need to be outgoing and not afraid to speak your mind. They also do not go by a seniority motive in any way.

The average work day was very unpredictable. Staff would need to be prepared for clients on drugs, promiscuos activity between clients and aggresive behaviour towards staff and other clients. Staff assisted with finding clients jobs, a place to live continuing education, social/life skills.

What I learned most from this job is working in crisis setting, making quick decisions and learning form the clients struggles.

I enjoyed my experience working with the youth. Daily challenges helped me grow as a counsellor and interacting with this particular group of youth made me more aware of the difficulties and challenges some youth and families must face in their daily life.
Team morale was inconsistant, staff turnover and clients issues would sometimes cause staff burnout.
