A quarter of my life was spent with this company. I worked in the greater Toronto area for 8.5 years. Once I moved for family reasons to a location 2 hours away, I noticed area managers didn't hold the same business family ethics there were in the GTA. For example, in the gta they focused on promotions from within the same store, transfers to other stores for advancement, lateral moves for best fit etc.. The district I transferred to hired me to cover a leave, then told me I would be given a position when this person returned, then reneged on this and offered me a demotion, all while hiring managers who divided and berated the current staff, and basically managed by bullying. Never once after leaving the gta Sport Cheks did I feel this company actually cared for its employees.
Discount = Cost plus a percentage on many items
Very little respect is paid to employees, Employees are expected to learn a lot of material and standards for such a small wage.
It took a while to learn all the tasks required in the service shop and such, but the team is fantastic and management is super supportive. Great flexibility if you need to move, transferring locations is fairly easy.
Weekend and evening heavy.
Manager never praised workers. just spoke when he had a different opinion. was not a fun place to work at all for department managers. Never had a chance to come up for air always head down in paperwork.and constantly training. you would just get someone trained and then they would quit and then that keeps repeating itself. Head office should maybe look at how long employees last there to know what kind of atmosphere it holds for employees to quit after such little time. I didn't appreciate having to wait at front of store to get checked by management when i had already clocked out and waiting around on my OWN TIME was ridiculous especially when i had another job to go to afterwards.>>
sticking around on your own time to be security checked before leaving.

Obviously, not everyone will have a difficult time as a cashier, you always have something to do, and it is a pretty straight forward position. Depending on the other departments, your day will range from average to absolute misery.I would not be as bitter about the job if I was not sexually harassed by several coworkers throughout my time with the company.
Supportive staff, Productive and fun workplace, friendly environment. I enjoy my work. The management is very supportive. You need to work a few months to get full time hours if you start as a part timer.
Not enough hours
Sportchek is like any other retail job, workers are expected to do more, and deal with more, than what they are paid. New hires are often paid more than some of the employees who had been working there for several years. They are flexible with hours, especially if you play a sport and need time off for a tournament, and you can always trade shifts with coworkers if they are willing. Management can be very uptight, depending on the day, and sometimes offer little help if your department is busy. This job can teach you great customer service skills, how to have a hard work ethic, and how to be patient with frustrating customers if you are willing to learn. You will be praised, but you won't be compensated for always going above and beyond. If you're a high school or college student looking to work a minimal amount of hours to either get a little cash or entry level work experience, then this job can be a good fit.
Great discount, flexible hours, learning opportunities
sub-par management, deal with customers

The only concern is manager issues not being addressed, lack of professionalism (mostly with younger staff), and favoritism. Which nothing too serious ever happened, but its unfortunate to be ignored when complaints arise.
Working at Sportchek is an awesome experience. Make friends that share the same passion as you. Gained lots of retail skills which is very useful. Management is a good balance of fun but also getting work done.
A typical day at work would show that the mornings start off fairly slowly, depending on the time of year of course and continue to gradually get quicker until the store closes. I learned a lot at sportchek however I would have stayed with the company if not for the incompetent store management. Unfortunately, most people who make it up to management are not fit to manage people. The hardest part of the job was dealing with some management members, abusive customers that get backed up by management. The most enjoyable part of the job is your fellow coworkers. They make the job worth the struggle.
SC 389 is a fun sports environment to be involved in with regards to the product you are selling and being trained in, as well as the customers you are greeting. The fellow workers are usually younger and there is a high school drama and gossip environment involved.
