I’ve worked part time for sportcheck for about a year and a half now (I’m a student) and I have a really great bond with my co-workers and managers! The job itself is pretty easy, and I haven’t had any serious issues with the company. My only two comments is that my location faces some understaffing issues. They also push their employees to sell the Triangle Master Card to customers. Realistically, no customer is going to sign up for a credit card because a teenager in a retail store told them all of the benefits.
Fun and friendly work environment
Sometimes understaffed (even on busy days such as weekends)
Sportchek Nanaimo has the chance to be such a fun and professional work place but it is blinded and thrown off course by a manager who is more focused and determined to be liked by his staff on a personal level than a professional level. The general manager is constantly taking time to shop for himself during his shift while other employees struggle with customers and spends most of his time in his office slacking off or singing while other team members organize a way to pick up his slack. This manager has been report before for verbal and emotional harassment. To anyone looking to work at Sportchek Nanaimo I strongly encourage to look at other places First
Amazing staff and assistant managers
10/10 would recommend to friends, family & Strangers alike as it was unreal how family oriented a retail store could be but sportchek made me feel at home right away and had excellent procedures in place to insure rightful advancement.
Discounts, Lunch room, awesome co workers
The summary says it all, so anyway, here's WonderwallToday is gonna be the dayThat they're gonna throw it back to youOkay maybe not. You're treated like a family member, tasks are easy, and helping customers is simple. We all work together, each has their own task, but working together on a big task, or with customers helps speed up the process!
Everyone is friendly to work with. Everyone pitches in to get the job(s) done.
Limited hours can short-staff us, though this is rare. No benefits unless FT.

Working at Sportchek is an awesome experience. Make friends that share the same passion as you. Gained lots of retail skills which is very useful. Management is a good balance of fun but also getting work done.
SC 389 is a fun sports environment to be involved in with regards to the product you are selling and being trained in, as well as the customers you are greeting. The fellow workers are usually younger and there is a high school drama and gossip environment involved.

The work wasn't the problem, the work was actually very fun. I used to pick up all the shifts I can just because I enjoyed the experience. The troubling part was dealing with a bunch of unprofessional unfair managers who power trip on you all day just to feel better about their miserable lives. They favour certain people over others. It's hard to make them feel smart and important because most of them are actually stupid and insignificant. Say goodbye to your hours if you accidentally rub off one of them the wrong way. The general manager was also racist and treated people of colour as secondary employees. You gotta act as a "model minority" if you are a minority employee or else you're not getting any hours. Even if you put in the most work you're still considered secondary. Overall the treatment from most managers was horrific, unfair and unprofessional. Again it's a fun place to work with great discounts, but for your health and sanity, don't work here.
working at sport check is great, but unfortunately the pay is not what i expected and the hours are not given for full time. it is a great job for part time workers and for students that are doing school and need flexible work hours.
The management and other employees were great to work with and made the job enjoyable. I would talk to customers and clean/ stock the store when not with customers. It could be stressful when busy as with any customer service job but we had great teamwork to relieve the stress.
The staff and management are very inclusive and friendly. They consider the needs of the team and ensure that whilst employees do their job, they still feel at ease working there. Sometimes employees are expected to be fast paced and to work under pressure, but it is never overwhelming or something one cannot handle.
Plenty of education goes into getting the job (i.e. training with sports equipment and products) which is highly transferable to other places of work, fun people to work with but management can be touch-and-go based on location
Incredible at-cost discount on all products
Can be mundane if quiet location
The days can either be fast or slow it really depends. You do learn a lot about safety and sports equipment and clothing and even supplements, which I found pretty interesting. The only bad thing I can say is that management was not pleasant at all.
I have never worked somewhere so horrible. The safety was a HUGE issue. I had improper training which lead to me getting hurt and my work not even filling out WCB. We were told it's "fine" to stand on the top step of a ladder. Schedule was none exsistant. Management was insanely bad. I got told I was hired in October and then a month later after hearing nothing I contacted them to find out they forgot about me .. worked for 2 months and hated every second
