It took a while to learn all the tasks required in the service shop and such, but the team is fantastic and management is super supportive. Great flexibility if you need to move, transferring locations is fairly easy.
Weekend and evening heavy.
The expectations from employees are so low just show up for your shift and don't mess anything up. Walk around smile and don't be on your phone because some of the managers might freak out.
very low pay for skilled workers who does more work in terms of service, sharpening skates etc
A typical day at Sport Chek would be helping customers find the shoe they need, whether it be for running or casual wear. Working in the footwear department provides you experience in the retail business as well as experience in customer service during busy times as events that sport chek provides creates a busy atmosphere where people customer service skills are constantly tested.
I've worked at two locations and saw two very different lifestyles. The larger store I worked at was amazing. Understaffed is always an issue however but that's remained constant wherever I go. Below are a few issues that have come up that you will likely see if you work here. I'm not doing this to shame the company but management is accountable. There is an issue with management, the role is usually given to those who are simply there most of the time (open availability) regardless of how mature or ready they are. Many of my managers were simply too young, naïve and immature to provide any form of leadership. ALSO DO NOT EXPECT MANAGERS TO EVER HAVE YOUR BACK. GIVEN THE OPPURTUINTY THEY WILL ALWAYS SIDE WITH THE CUSTOMER EVEN IF YOUR TRYING TO ENFORCE POLICY. One example is we have a 60 day return policy (must have tags/receipts etc). 5 years later? No receipt? No tags? No proof that the item even comes from Sportchek? Want the refund in cash? Seems suspicious and I calmly explain to the customer the policies. Customer gets irate and asks for the manager. General Manager comes down, I explain the situation and the manager says "Its ok." Customer looks at you like they bested you. Wonderful feeling Another issue is shifts given. We're all asked to keep a good availability and that if you want a specific day off it should be booked more than three weeks in advance (makes sense). This is because we're promised to be given the weeks schedule 2-3 weeks in advance. This never happens, and the average is usually 1-2 days. With scheduling, there is a heavy favouritism given - plus...

I worked for the company for nearly 3 years and have absolutely nothing good to say about it. Management is terrible company wide. I know many people who transferred between Sportcheks or worked at other stores in my city. Every manager at my store treated all the employees like they were stupid. Constant disrespect. 8 and a half hours shifts were only given one unpaid 30 minute break which I think is ridiculous considering we're on our feet all day. No chance to move up in the company, management position are few and far between. The only positive is the employee discount which is a big reason some people stay for so long.

Sportchek was my first real job, at first I absolutely loved the job but now working there for a couple years and the original staff leaving and new ones coming in I look for a new job everyday, the current management at my location are very discourteous. As for being a student and working part time the hours I'm given are unreasonable. However, the job is very easy to learn and i adore my coworkers .
work being done is fun and pretty easy to learn
As someone who has been given two advancements at Sportchek I can say it is not easy for most employees. Management depends on location but is usually lacking in communication. Great benefits to working for the company such as flexible schedules and great employee purchase programs. It is overall a good part time job.
