I’ve worked part time for sportcheck for about a year and a half now (I’m a student) and I have a really great bond with my co-workers and managers! The job itself is pretty easy, and I haven’t had any serious issues with the company. My only two comments is that my location faces some understaffing issues. They also push their employees to sell the Triangle Master Card to customers. Realistically, no customer is going to sign up for a credit card because a teenager in a retail store told them all of the benefits.
Fun and friendly work environment
Sometimes understaffed (even on busy days such as weekends)
Not only is the pay low, but management expect employees to live and breathe the company. Whether it's dropping what you're doing when they call you to come in or needing to take a day off for appointments, its an issue. At the location I was at theft was a constant problem with thieves pulling a knife on me personally and another more notable incident of a taser being pulled on a manager. After these incidents the immediate response to employees was to disengage with people stealing but a day or two later you are encouraged to put your self in harms way for a t-shirt or jacket. I made many good friends there which is nice but in four and a half years the atmosphere was not one that I would ever want to work in again
Sportchek Nanaimo has the chance to be such a fun and professional work place but it is blinded and thrown off course by a manager who is more focused and determined to be liked by his staff on a personal level than a professional level. The general manager is constantly taking time to shop for himself during his shift while other employees struggle with customers and spends most of his time in his office slacking off or singing while other team members organize a way to pick up his slack. This manager has been report before for verbal and emotional harassment. To anyone looking to work at Sportchek Nanaimo I strongly encourage to look at other places First
Amazing staff and assistant managers

10/10 would recommend to friends, family & Strangers alike as it was unreal how family oriented a retail store could be but sportchek made me feel at home right away and had excellent procedures in place to insure rightful advancement.
Discounts, Lunch room, awesome co workers
Sportchek is the most awesome workplace I ever had . Employees and most especially managers are too friendly , kind and approachable , they help you learn new things and helping you out everytime you have a hard time dealing with customers .
I thoroughly enjoyed my job description, but couldn’t get over management. During the duration of my job there, I always felt like the “dumb one” that would get thrown into the situations that the managers wouldn’t dare put their favourite employees in (favouritism was a MASSIVE issue. Don’t expect to be the favour of by doing well. It’s unpredictable). They were only nice to me when they needed me to do something, although I was apparently one of the quickest fulfillment associates they’ve ever had. Managers are unprofessional and secretive, somewhat abrasive and expected the world from you even though there’s no way that they would return it. Corporate consistently had changing expectations which would throw all of us for a loop almost daily. On top of this, either I’d be scheduled almost every day of the week, or I’d get scheduled for one 4 hour shift over a two week span. I met some very great people there and I loved working in fulfillment, but I’d never go back to this company. Managers need to be more heavily interviewed and screened before being hired.Plus, they were very shady about COVID-19 outbreaks and frequently skipped over pandemic safety requirements such as monitoring capacity.
Thank you for giving me opportunity to work with such great company specially with really nice coworkers and boss! Cranbrook sportcheck is really good place for school and college students. Managers train you really good and so flexible with scheduling. I worked for 3 years. Amazing experience.
Flexible, discounts, friendly environment, best management team
Very slow paced work environment, found myself working four and a half hours alot because they do not have to give you a paid lunch and will only pay you for four and a half hours to prevent you from receiving a full five hour pay. During the interview I was told about "1000 dollar store credit" that I could spend by the end of the year but when I was about to do so I learned that it was 10% off with a maximum limit of 1000 dollars. So basically you lose the employee discount once you receive 1000 dollars off of everything you spent so in its essence your only receiving a gas station coffee deal to buy 9 get 1 for free.
10 percent off
Slow. Lots of standing around
sportchek is the easiest job ever. If the people you work with are nice then its fun. Customers can be rude but that sales for you. Management can be bad at communicating but overall its a very very easy job and can be fun with the right people
Goodluck on your first couple of days because once youre hired management just throws you out there without any proper set up and kind of think on the spot.
The expectations from employees are so low just show up for your shift and don't mess anything up. Walk around smile and don't be on your phone because some of the managers might freak out.
very low pay for skilled workers who does more work in terms of service, sharpening skates etc
It was okay working here. It's an entry level job. You learn a bunch. You have some nasty co-workers who expect you to know stuff when you're new and don't try to teach you. However, I've had a few good coworkers who were fun to work with. Managers are okay. They mostly yell at you if you have no work to do. It's a good job if you want job experience. Just know you're expected to work hard at minimum wage. Discounts are pretty good.
Coworkers, management, stressful
The upside is the staff makes it fun, friendly and its a great discount but at what cost? The management in my experience was horrible & the training was poor. Your Coworkers are probably the only aspects that enhances the experience of working there. Depending on the location, some are often short staffed so you have 1 person working 2 departments which can only cause room of opportunities for external theft, causing the customer to get frustrated with little attention & all that work was for nothing because now you didn't make a sale. Whats even more frustrating is some store managers don't help 😒 which causes employees turnover rate to sky high because of built up resentment, little support on the sales floor or being short staffed causing employees to feel overwhelmed & helpless.
The summary says it all, so anyway, here's WonderwallToday is gonna be the dayThat they're gonna throw it back to youOkay maybe not. You're treated like a family member, tasks are easy, and helping customers is simple. We all work together, each has their own task, but working together on a big task, or with customers helps speed up the process!
Everyone is friendly to work with. Everyone pitches in to get the job(s) done.
Limited hours can short-staff us, though this is rare. No benefits unless FT.
Enjoyed working here for a while. Great coworkers, interesting workplace, and enjoyed 2 of the managers. My manager was very snarky and rude to most of the employees unfortunately and the store manager didnt doing do much
Amazing discount, Flexible schedules
Aweful Managers, Can be boring at times
A quarter of my life was spent with this company. I worked in the greater Toronto area for 8.5 years. Once I moved for family reasons to a location 2 hours away, I noticed area managers didn't hold the same business family ethics there were in the GTA. For example, in the gta they focused on promotions from within the same store, transfers to other stores for advancement, lateral moves for best fit etc.. The district I transferred to hired me to cover a leave, then told me I would be given a position when this person returned, then reneged on this and offered me a demotion, all while hiring managers who divided and berated the current staff, and basically managed by bullying. Never once after leaving the gta Sport Cheks did I feel this company actually cared for its employees.
Discount = Cost plus a percentage on many items
Very little respect is paid to employees, Employees are expected to learn a lot of material and standards for such a small wage.
