Its "fine" for a 12 hour a week job

Job is fine, better than most grocery clerk positions as money spent by customers is money they can spend, rather than must, so they are more overall positive. No opportunity for advancement into non-store positions. Hours are determined at the whim of the store manager, if you get along with their demands you might get 30 hours a week, if you don't (and even if you do) you get every saturday and sunday night to work even if they agree to rotate. Most of not all store management have a "let someone else deal with it" attitude.

Don't work there

Me, my sister and a bunch of my friends have worked at Sobeys (all different ones) and all of our experiences have been horrible. Horrible management. They didn't care about their employees at all. There isn't a single thing good about working there. The only good thing is that all the people that hated working there (which was basically everyone) got along well and were nice to everyone.

High expectations with no motivation to exceed

Few staff members that are constantly rude, hard to get any day off even for emergencies and/or important appointments. Expected to know everything although not all retail is the same. Expected to know how to;Do inspectionsKnow where and what everything isDo lottery (Not told you need to know until the time comes)Most people treat new employees like nobodies and wonder why they leave. If they change and treat everyone as equal it wouldn’t be half bad.

Disappointing

Interesting place to work. Would not recommend. If you are sick and need time off you will get your hours cut after that as punishment. Terribly unprofessional management team.

If you want to work here be prepared to have a company care more about the money they make compared to your mental health.

When I first started working for Sobeys I was really excited. I got told I would be trained as we went on since I was in Floral. At the time I had a boss who was very nice and understanding. That boss ended up transferring stores and that's where everything went downhill. The new boss came in expecting me to know everything (even though I was not trained properly) this caused this boss to have high expectations that I could not meet. At the beginning of this year I was pulling full time hours. When corona hit I was forced onto the cash for grocery (without being trained) this was a lot for me to handle since I wasn't used to that department and the work load it had. I explained this to the store manager I said I would work anywhere needing help. Cash was just too much. They automatically cut my hours to nothing. I was out of my job for 2 months. When I returned my department was just opening up and my hours were cut in half... It was a bit before I was almost at my regular hours until the students came back from college. Then my hours got cut to less than part time (I moved out on my own and have bills that 4 hours a week will not pay for) my boss knew my situation and still cut my hours and gave them all to a student. I asked for an explanation but never received one until I did something wrong. The store manager and my boss pulled me into the office and bullied me, called me all these names and told me the reason for my cut hours was I didn't do the job properly. Which I didn't find fare enough because I wasn't Trained to begin with. Honestly my boss made me feel like I wasn't -

Good place to work

I worked with Sobeys 4 plus years both Corporate owned and franchise owned. Corporate is definitely the way to go. With franchise there is too many things the owner has control over such as hours, pay, workload, advancement etc. If they are greedy all of the above items will not be positive for you! If you have a good manager in your department that's great ( i did ) My experience with corporate storewas all positive! Franchise not so much.

Most days is a relaxed atmosphere

On a typical day there is a numerous items to prepare, such as fruits cut fruit when summer appraoches. We have a small team that works very well together, and helps one another when needed.

Terrible management and ineffective union

A typical day at work involves cleaning up after highly paid Grid A employees that get paid to stay home for 3 months out of the year and act like they own the place for the other 9, getting berated for customers about things that are out of your control or the fault of your managers, getting berated by your managers for things that other employees have not done, getting berated by your managers for "making excuses" or "shifting the blame" when you point out that you are not responsible for things that other employees have not done, being gaslit by management. The managers have rules for some and rules for others, and if they like you then you can get away with murder but if you're just there to do your job and go home without acting all buddy-buddy with them then they treat you like garbage. They also lie through their teeth and talk poorly about EVERYONE when they're in the office. It's basically like highschool except you're getting paid. Getting paid less than everyone else to do all of the heavy lifting, I mean. The union is pretty trash too. They really only exist so that the lazy doggers who cause problems can whine and complain that they're being treated unfairly when they're expected to do their jobs, and the productive staff get shafted for "insubordination" when they get tired of more and more being shoveled onto their plate to make up for people who shouldn't even be working. I'm not exaggerating when I say Walmart doesn't sound like any worse of a place to work. If it wasn't on the other side of town, I'd quit and go there in an instant.

Good place to work with enough and safety conditions. I learned work in big groups and variety of consumers. Good workplace culture. The managment some times open head.

decent workplace for first job experience

it was an exhausting job in which the management are not helpful but rather induce the tiredness/stress. They can be strict and come off as rude and rarely praise you for your well doings. it can be good for a first job but would never go back unless it was for the co-workers.

Toxic

Toxic environment. Pay is good but that's the only pro. It's not worth ruining your mental health for. Very childish environment. Managers are unprofessional.

Very fun, inclusive, community driven grocery store with potential for younger employees to learn and grow.

Very good place for young people to work. There is opportunity for driven individuals to learn more about the grocery industry, improve their people skills (especially customer service and relations skills), and make new friends. The store management provides a fun, engaging environment to work by challenging their employees to be their best selves.

Favoritism

Pros and Cons

The pros: if you work for a corporate store, they have a competitive pay scale that if you put in the work, you can advance up fairly quick. Blue Cross medical and dental benefits, and a pension through Manulife for part and full time employees, corporate or franchise. There is a diversity of jobs and they are willing to cross train. And, you will work with some amazing people from all walks of life. The cons: the overwhelming majority of staff are kept on as part time workers indefinitely. Even those who have worked their for years and desperately want full time positions. They will work you like a dog during the holiday season and then in January, cut you down to less than half the hours. There is also a culture of punching down and bullying that stems from management. The stress can be unbearable, dependent on who your managers are.

Not and ideal workplace

significant problems with mid level and store management. Most managers are extremely incompetent and delegate their own work to employees in their departments.

Terrible

The entire location was full of managers that had no idea what they were doing. Part-time employees were forced to take on so many more tasks than in the job description.

I hated it

Overall a good place to work at

A typical day would be preparing all the ingredients for pizza's for an easy access for cooking for the customers who orders pizza, making sure that everything is clean and within the managers standards of cleanliness

Spruce grove sobys is horrible

The managment lies to get you in, belittles employees, talks about staff to other staff in the aisles, schedules you outside you availability, and only hires part time 3 days a week. (Even if they say the will give you more hours, they wont) Worst place I have ever worked. Other staff is great!
