Good management with good employees

In my experience with working at sobeys, the management team has been very friendly and the co workers are very friendly as well. Unfortunately there has been a decline in customers in the summer which leads to less hours for everybody and the pay isn’t amazing, with no real holiday leave other than a 4% bonus once a year from your entire salary from the last year. There aren’t many benefits (unless you count a 10% air miles discount a benefit). It’s a really good part time job, but if you are looking for a full time position, I would suggest looking elsewhere due to the low pay and lack of employee benefits

Fun place to work

Both the employees and customers are great. Friendly work environment. The supervisors are helpful and the front-end manager is very accommodating. Great place to work part-time.

Horrible and stressful

I worked at the Sobeys gas station for four years and I was treated like garbage I was constantly told that I am replaceable even after my 3 month probation some of my co workers had a online group chat and talked about other co workers and the management did nothing about it it’s such a toxic work place would not recommend this job what so ever

Good Job for Students/Seniors

It's a good place to work if you just want part-time work. No full-time hours unless you want a management position, and with that they own you - they have the right to move you wherever they need you within the district. They don't necessarily hire managers who manage staff well, but if they can produce sales and keep productivity high they are 'good' in their eyes. Worked for the company for over 14 yrs just for the benefits! Once I was able to secure a full-time job, I was out of there.

The perfect place to work if you want to feel underappreciated.

Not a bad place to work if you dont mind short notice on scheduling, bosses always telling what you do wrong but praise is never received either verbally or monetarily. No morale or team building. Poor poor management.

Bait and switch job offerings

Posted a ad and I responded, hired for another position instead. I wasn't too impressed as the job I applied for was more suitable. Lots of friendly faces and promises of good culture. Not being able to keep hydrated did it for me.

Will never recommend

Absolutely the worst job. The amount of stress the manager caused me got to the point I had to quit for the sake of my mental health. They do not care about anyone’s personal life and they threatened to fire me or to cut my hours because I had to isolate or because I was sick. They hid the fact that someone came to work as a close contact and they use your requested days off against you. The harassment was unreal and more than one employee agreed with me on the bad treatment. I tried to contact corporate multiple times with no luck... sobeys Paradise NL everybody...

Only fun if working with friends

I’ve worked here for 6 years and make minimum wage with minimal discounts. I qualify for 0 benefits yet I work full time hours while being considered “part time” Customers can be rude and you’re on your feet the whole day.

The worst!!

I worked here for 3 years, most miserable place to be. Sadly management and even the other staff just think they’re too good to work here. Owner will yell at you in front of customers (never happened to me but saw it happen many times!) the only perks of working at this place is being able to schedule lots of time off whenever needed, and you can get shifts covered/ pick up shifts often. Maybe the other locations treat there employees better tho!

Horrid

The amount of drama and gossip at this place is overwhelming, also management is very poor and don’t understand workers have a life outside of the job

Stressful workplace

Very stressful workplace especially since covid started. Super busy all day with big line ups and most days they don’t schedule enough people. Always have to call managers or supervisors to jump in tills and even then it’s still busy. Most people who work the front end (cashiers, curtesy clerks, supervisors) do not like working there, I have heard this from many people, one supervisor actually greeted me to work by saying “welcome to the hēll hole”. It’s usually so busy you can’t even take a break for a sip of water. (Management said when I was first hired to never drink water in front of a customer) and there’s always customer after customer after customer. If you call in needing the day off for mental health issues the manager always sounds annoyed which doesn’t help the situation.

Would not recommend to work there poorly run by manager

Never would go back again to working for this company. Very poor management. They have favouritism. They take advantage of good workers. They don’t go by the rules. It’s not a family they are all for the self. NO TEAM WORK !!!

An expendable cog in a machine

It was my last summer before I went away to university, and after booking time off to go on vacation with family, they still scheduled me to work and told me I'd need to find someone to cover my shift. After covering roughly 20 shifts throughout the year and never missing one of my own, I figured someone would cover my shift but I was mistaken. Everyone just so happened to be "busy", whether it was a doctor's appointment on a Saturday, or their cousins dogs brother was in town for the weekend. I had approximately a week left at the time so I just quit on the spot, as they had made it clear that they do not value the lower level staff and they are just underpaid cogs in the corporate machine.

Not bad for a first job.

Definitely no complaints about the work. You’ll get the occasional customer that is rude, but that’s expected. The location I worked had a “tight knit family” feel, so I wasn’t very accepted when I joined the team, as they all had very close relationships with one another that they didn’t want ruined. Management wasn’t always around, so young supervisors were in charge, making it a little more toxic, as they had an elitist mindset. Manager was very nice, helpful, kind, willing to listen and helped in stressful times. My availability wasn’t payed attention to all that much, but I didn’t speak up about it. Very customer oriented, so if a customer is unhappy, you will get reprimanded for it. I would say this is a good place to work if you have a good backbone and are willing to stand up for yourself.

Horrible place to work

DO NOT WORK HERE!!! Managers can be very rude to their employees. They will pick favourites, most of which are not even based on performance. If you book a shift off, they cut your hours for the next 3 weeks. There is no proper order or management, so you can do whatever you want such as talk to other cashiers, use your phone whenever you want, take longer breaks, or go to the washroom which is a pro. Management has no control and will only get mad if they don't like you, but if they do like you, you get away with anything. I don't know why I work here when there are way better jobs but it's only because I live close to the store.

Management is not there to help you with any problems

Do not wish to say as have nothing good to say about this company or management or higher ups in this company. I am not answering this question at all and will never give this company any good review to work there. In my experience they are very discrimitory and more

Cashier

I was 67 when I was hired I was able to feel comfortable and worthy This lovely job helped increase our quality of life as our pension is fixed and expenses are not I was happy and treated well every day! The longwood management are wonderful and the scheduling clerks were awesome 👏

They play favourites.

It’s awful how management discriminates towards younger employees, expesically the new hires. Pay is way off, don’t even get me started on vacation pay. Harassment happens daily and they have no respect for customers behind the sense. Someone needs to look into the Collingwood store...

Good starting job

Each store/department is going to be different in regards to managentment and with different hours that you can work. Overall, not a bad experience in regards to coworkers and management. However, you need to be able to sometimes deal with difficult customers, and need to be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time.
