High expectations of hours worked if a salaried role and an antiquated and authoritarian management structure. Average pay and benefits. Some great people to work with but some morale struggles due to staffing and authoritarian management structure.

Some great processes in place but people an after thought often as a result of number watching and an extreme metric focus.


Great for a year or two and I did learn some new processes which may be transferable to other industries and can definitely be used in similar fields.

I worked at Slegg for 8 months, when I applied I was promised I would be driving in 3 months after I learned product. I was employee of the month my first two months, just to show you my work ethic.. By the end after me asking continuously I was told "maybe you could be a back up driver." I realized I had just been hired to fill another position in the yard and soon found out many other yard employees had been told they could be drivers too! Even though I had been hired for that and was more qualified then them. During slow times sometimes you didn't have anything to do, there is only so many times you can sweep a bay. When you asked what you could do they would just say "help customers" but there wasn't any? So you would then be in trouble for doing nothing. You were made to ask customers multiple times if they needed help or told to just stand by them. The shipper would see a customer that you already helped, ("Hi there can I help you find anything?" "No, I'm ok" "Okay well I'll just be over there if you need anything"), and get mad and swear loudly thinking you hadn't helped them. Pay was decent to start but my raise of 45 cents was the highest one awarded among the yard staff. Boss was funny and nice but didn't seem to know what was really happening in the yard and left two angry people to run it. Often understaffed due to high turn over, management would ask people leaving if it was the other staffs "negative attitude" Inside staff were often belittling and rude over the radio and wouldn't go outside to check anything even when they know yard staff is busy. they ask for a lot and when you give it there isn't much appreciation at all. management thinks things magically happen and you don't get much support. the hard workers get overlooked at times and you're treated like they are doing you a favour, instead of promoting and acknowledging team work. the in crowd gets ahead while the others stay spinning their wheels until they get so fed up that they just leave. to many good people have left Slegg and there needs to be a change starting from the very top.

This company is a joke. Other lumber yards are far superior to work for.
No advancement, pay raises are cents, HR doesn't exist, conflicts left to worsen, high turnover(12 people in 8 months), fast paced(run off feet, called from breaks), no leadership, no communication, no direction, expected to do everything at once, no appreciation, empty promises, no staff functions.

I worked for Slegg for about six years. The job was good enough for what was needed at the time & I had a little bit of movement upwards in the business. It did not come with a pay increase, hence me leaving. My first position was just a yard labourer. Throughout my time there I showed initiative & picked up responsibilities which had me move inside to get into a sales position. Unfortunately the company changed hands just before that happened & there was no pay increase to be had. In my annual employee report I was actually deemed as being worse than the year before, as my knowledge with previous products was of no use in my new position. These reports dictate your pay raise, so I was kind of screwed by the management. I literally went from exceeding expectations across the board to being well below it. Slegg is nowhere near what it used to be, that is more a fault of the new owners than the managers. Before giving my two weeks I felt more like a number, rather than an employee of a local business.

As long as you can lift cement bags,fast paced environment, picking orders flat stacking lumber,paver blocks cleaning up garage ie metal strapping lumber covers

Very supportive, fun team of people to work with. The support comes from the top down, with an open door policy. Love working there. There is a family feeling when there, we all look out and support each other.

This company is top heavy. And if you are a family member with people at the top you can have a job even if you are not qualified. Really not a fun place to work, if you are not liked they will eventually get you to quit or get fired before your probation is over.

Found staff to be energetic and willing tooo teach or share knowledge was able too communicate to management on an understanding level found pay was reasonable and fair

No room for you to advance or get cross trained despite how many areas there are to potentially grow.

This is due to very weak management that is generally comprised of former contractors/yard employees who are only in said position of authority due to their tenure at the company.


Very few professionally trained people who are generally too preoccupied to help you.


HR isn't present at a lot of locations


Be prepared to have a competitive wage at the start and then never go up beyond general increases in minimum wage/not at all.


You will learn quickly that the talented hard working employees are kept at the bottom and are at the heart of the lack of growth and high turnover.


Slegg can be good to you for interm work or as a first job. But beyond that, you will be verbally abused and/or taken advantage of until they can get another replacement.

i enjoyed working at slegg, but the inability to progress from a floors person to anything else was a bit underwhelming. management seemed to care less if they had to just hire another person vs training who they had to be able to do more

Business for a building materials supplier slows down during the winter, meaning managers only want enough people employed to run during the slowest time of the year. This means when you fill a certain role, management wants you there as long as possible.

Ask yourself "why is there such a great turnover at Slegg?" If you look on media such as Facebook, Linkedin, etc you can check to see who worked there and follow up with them on their experiences.
I am most confident people will tell you their experience and then you can make the decision to accept or decline. Be informed?

Decent place to work. Hard work though, and you must do it all outside in all weather conditions. The customers are always fun to work with and find out what projects they are working on and help them find the materials they need to complete their projects.

The pay is on par with the rest of the island. If you come in with little to no experience expect to be paid accordingly. But as you learn more you will get paid more, and there is a lot to learn.


The benefits plan is really good if you can pass the 18 months required for full benefits, but you'll get a smaller version of the benefits after 3 months, plus monthly company provided food days (bbq of some kind or pizza) not to mention many different discounts at random places on Vancouver Island, food trucks roll in as well, and of course an employee discount and uniform (shirt / hats).


There is very high employee turnover here though. I've found so far that out of the 20 (made up number) people that started working there since last year, 18 of them quit due to weather or hard work, Yes most left on their own, and all with different random reasons.


The training provided by other staff members is adequate enough, but you will really have to pick up a lot of knowledge on your own about the products and services provided at Sleggs, for which they have online learning programs free to employee's. You can also ask some of the more senior staff, they have good solid knowledge as well. But if you don't ask or can't find the information for yourself, your left to your own demise. They can show you the way, but it's up to

Slegg is an average company to work for. Depending on your position within the company you are either given a ton of training or told to "sink or swim". This company was bought out a few years ago. So they are still relatively "green". Their upper management says they are working on improving morale, but they are slow moving with this. The company needs to realize that they cannot change everything overnight.

It will take time, and if they want all of the "upgrades" to stick and be accepted, they need to find a way to ensure buy-in from the employees and STOP treating the employees as if they are expendable. Treating employees as expendable causes morale to decrease and increase the turnover rate.


This company has the potential to become amazing, they just need to find a way to have everyone on board and have them feel as though they matter.

I was an employee here for a very long time and was not treated fairly. The staff and co-workers were great but things slowly went down hill. Leaving there was the best desicion I have ever made! I don't recommend this place at all.

wouldnt ever work there again. for the work you are asked to complete the pay is not adaquate. working in most weather conditions outside. if you do not like people this is not the job for you

Slegg's management promotes such great opportunity while interviewing with them and during your initial beginnings with them. You very quickly learn how toxic of an environment it truly is. Training is limited, you're more or less expected to sink or swim.Turn over is crazy. Someone is always quitting or being fired. Morale is very low among staff which doesn't appear to be of concern to management. Customers continuously complain how bad the service is since WSB Titan has taken over. It is very unfortunate as Slegg used to be a name known for its customer service, quality products and a great place to consider for employment.
