A typical day at work starts the night before with organizing your schedule and calling all your clients for the next day to let them know what time you can come. You are emailed a schedule around 6pm, some are time specific, and some are not. It is fairly flexible what time you do the ones who are not time specific, so this does make it easier to plot your life around work, or give yourself a long lunch break if that's what you want. During the day you visit clients and do a broad base of skills, probably one of the highest skilled positions available to RPNs. I love that part of the job. I also love the clients for the most part. The km pay is not great and doesn't come close to covering your expense. Hours are widely variable and it is hard to get more than 30 hours weekly even at " full time" If you are the sole provider for your family this is not a good place to work as the pay is so variable from week to week. If money isn't the main issue, the job is fantastic. Your work day ends with supply orders and updates to the LHIN.

Company has a good recruitment team that lies about pay/hours. Reality is that you will be paid the lowest in the field, with wage capped at the same rate as everyone else, regardless of experience/senority ($32/hr max for RNs). You will be on call with every evening shift for only $18 - for the whole night! The only home care agency to not pay one hour/visit, despite recieving the same $$ from the LHIN as competing agencies. They say it is because we have more support, but the education team is judgemental and unavailable, and those responsible for scheduling are too overworked to support you. The supervisor works only for higher management, not to support front line workers. No job security (you will be hired full time but are not guaranteed full time hours). Also scheduled with way too many patients during high periods. Lots of admin issues - timekeeping errors, missed visits, last minute add ons, unable to get through to office on calls, lots of documentation/call on your own time. Worst place Ive ever worked.

Company has very high turn over, which is certainly related to the quality of support provided to SE Health employees. I had many supervisors and coordinators providing minimum support. Supervisors and coordinators have ridiculous job descriptions that don't allow them to actually support front line staff in an effective manner. The company's recent lay offs of office staff have impacted the quality of life for the remaining workers in the office and make it even more challenging for front line staff. HR is pathetic and provide services that violate their own policies. The pay and benefits at SE Health are horrendous and bottom of the barrel in health care. As a visit nurse you make very little after you calculate all of your travel expenses and non-paid hours of work that need to be completed. SE Health spends lots of effort and resources to maintain the not for profit image of the company. Don't judge the book by it's cover, SE Health loves their profits!

I found the company, management and colleagues very supportive. I loved the job but the area covered meant lots of driven kilometres every day I found this difficult.

Great nurse teamwork, support each other. A good place to gain a variety of clinic skills. Management is slow to process and unorganized. Managements and new nurses turn over are high

Community organizations are always underfunded therefore the salary is not as desirable as a publicly funded organization however, this organization always strived to be a healthcare leader. They invested in their employees, recognized great work and provided an array of learning opportunities.

A typical day is very busy, travelling to go provide care to patients in their comfortable environment. Best part of my job, is providing client centered care in the client's environment. The hardest part of my job was the drive especially in the winter months. Overall, I love been a nurse and providing care for my clients.

Many new grads start this job but with the lack of training and throwing clients onto new nurses, it has causes a high turnover rate. Many of which going back to work in hospital. There are simply not enough nurses as when just ONE nurse is off, everyone else is overloaded with clients and there is no work/life balance. This not only take a toll on the individual but affects the care that they provide. Although you are working independently, your supervisor, desk coordinator, other colleagues, and resource team are a phone call away. Organizational skills and time management is a must as you need to review your schedule, call clients to confirm your visits, connect with the right people when you need to. This job can cause major burnout and self care is something that you need to consider when working in a job like this. Day shifts often go into the evening, and evening shifts often go late into the night. Also require overnight oncall shifts

Also lots of unpaid work - including admissions, talking to the care providers, Completing paperwork only to have the client discharged. Hasn't switched over to electronic charting.

Super flexible hours (which is great!), but on the days I work, it varies from having 3 patients to even 14 patients within an 8-hour work period.. Some days can be extremely stressful and some days can be a walk in the park. My team has been amazing, but I wish the pay was better for the work we do.

The "team" I worked with was great! Very intelligent ladies who were very supportive of each other. The management was another matter! There was no support and very little opportunity for advancement for anyone who worked hard---after all if you promote a worker bee, you loose productivity.

good place to work providing your paid to do all the long trips required. you have to watch and beg for your extra trip pays.

they do offer training providing you can find yourself time to do so.

I joined the company when it just opened a new office and had several new supervisors promoted so it was hectic and very disorganized. I feel that the orientation was severely lacking. I didn't get the promised two weeks of orientation, all they did was go over a couple of the modules that we were already assigned to complete independently and did not cover other important topics such as how to report to the lhin, etc. Everything was pushed onto the preceptors to show us but really, when they're scheduled a full day of clients already how much time can they spend training a new hire on administrative stuff that should have been covered during the classroom orientation?

There isn't much of a work life balance. If you are marked available for a particular day, they expect you to be available for the whole day and will regularly add more clients to your schedule without informing you. Easily go beyond 12 hours on the road just to get to everyone because you are not allowed to decline new clients and the coordinators don't care if you need to get home or have other appointments. They brag about how you can create your own schedule and be flexible in your timing but no, not really. A lot of clients are timed visits, which means they need the service at a particular time so you will find yourself driving from one edge of the city to the other with no breathing space.

Love this work, but with very little work hours/wk, I cannot afford to sustain my daily cost of living. No complain about management nor fellow workers. Good management, but not good pay.

this company is about running a business and making a "not for profit" profit on the humps of the front line workers - the workers have to fight for every penny, every minute worked - nobody has enough fight



this organization should have all of its employees on the front line unionized


retention would not be an issue if RHPs were protected and paid along side the rest of our colleague in Ontario....

I did not have a good experience with this agency. Poor management, poor coordination, co-workers were not team players.
Overall, I do not recommend working for this company as you will get no job satisfaction, other than the clients you see.

You get your caseload the day before, you're part of a group where you can obtain updates for your clients. You're independent, going to clients houses, assessing clients, and determining appropriate nursing interventions.
