Good place to work while in school but don't get stuck there

Save on foods is a fine place to work. They have a good union that makes it easy to work around school as long as you don't work more than 24 hours a week. Unfortunately you can only work full time if you are also fully available, and you can only take on supervisory and management roles if you are fully available and work full time. The people are nice enough but the gossip culture is exhausting and anyone who has worked there for more than 10 years make more money for less work than any new hire ever will.

Really good first job

They did group training a couple days after the interview and gave each of the hires two training shifts. The people were always supportive positive, and patient when someone was new. There was never less than 1 person per shift, so you never had to worry about being understaffed. Management knows what they're doing and are very professional in dealing with problems. They also work around your schedule if you're a high school or university student, which is really nice.

I work at save on foods currently, have been for almost 5 years but its time for a change. Depending on what department you are in, the typical day looks different. I have learned customer service skills, how to time management, leadership and teamwork.

Great starter or schools job

everyone for the most part is super sweet! I got promoted very fast from cashier to customer service and it built me a great resume. would not recommend for long term job and you cant take vacation for more than 3 days until you've worked there a year. you get paid every week at he same time which is super nice!

Great company to work for!

Everybody at the head office is friendly and professional. There are lots of opportunities to grow in this company. The managers,supervisors, team leads, and employees care about everybody's wellbeing and the company has a good sense of work/life balance. Very glad to work for this company. Keep up the good work!

Avoid IT Head Office Jobs

It really depends on your team. The people not in management roles are usually fairly nice and down to earth people. Job stability, if you like to repeat tasks and would like to stay in one position/title for your whole life. Some discounts of free items in store (a free bag of chips once in awhile). Their IT department is taking a huge hit in the last 2 years. Many people have quit and left. All of these people being in key roles. If you need proof, check LinkedIn on the status of all of their former employees. Ask any of them about it or ask a current employee. You will be expected to work more hours without any extra pay. Management is very political. If you plan on working on any projects expect major delays and a very lengthy process. Save yourself the hassle of having to join them only to have to find a new job after a few months. It has happened to a handful of new (now former) employees. Listen to your employees, keep the environment less political. This is 2020, management needs to stop living and operating as if it is still 1990.

Management wasn't very helpful

I was hired with conditions due to my illness and the lower management did not follow through with the things i was able and not able to do, the didn't follow my availability at all.

Good place to work

I learned a lot working here. It's very fast paced but once you get the hang of things it's fairly easy. Very people oriented. so you really have to like working in small proximity with other workers as well as being able to help out the customers in the store. Management is friendly and are usually available when needed.

Fun and challenging workplace, great place to develop your skills

Great place to start a career and develop your skills. Great benefits and employee recognition. Sometimes not enough work life balance because of resources. Raises are rare and you are not able to negotiate after you are employed, but the benefits and work culture are both very good.

Not recommended

Business is still done the old way new ideas are not welcome. Change is needed in a fast paced industry. Need to figure out how to keep your staff from leaving

Good IT opportunities yet stressful

Company is currently revamping many of its core computer systems and applications via a 5-year "Roadmap." Consequently, there are many opportunities for Systems Professionals in several disciplines (Programmers, Analysts, etc.). There is a lot of work to do and the pressure to succeed and deliver on-time is very strong. Depending on the position a person applies for the workload can be very stressful and the work/life balance very "unbalanced." Management is supportive but only for so long. Opportunities for advancement are few; management team is quite young. Company as a whole is good with a strong community and environmental focus and competitive salary and benefits.

Save-On-Foods is modernizing their systems and processes to excel in a competitive sector. There is a lot at stake, given the store business, and resources are made available at the head office to capitalize on opportunities. The company is in a good position for the future. You are expected to perform to high standards, and training is available if requested. It feels like everyone is on the 'same team' to get the company's priorities done, and co-workers help you succeed. There's a cafeteria on-site, as well as a free gym and free parking.

Productive workplace with a company that gives back to it's staff and the community

It's clear that Save On Foods cares about it's people and the community, and that everyone here really cares about their job. Everyone is treated with respect and given the opportunity to excel in their role. Even though there are many levels of management, there is not a culture of micro management, so everyone is empowered to do their job to the best of their ability.

Don't work here

All you are is a number, there are no benefits of working here, management is slimy and plays games with their employees. Not nearly enough pay. The idiots get promoted and the ones who consistently work hard and go the extra mile end up losing it and quitting because it's not worth the weak pay or stress. They push productivity and constantly cut hours to discipline everyone not the people who are lazy and unproductive just so management can get their christmas bonuses.

Great people

Great people and environment. The "fun" in the office has significantly dwindled over the last 10 years. I'd say if salaries matched industry standards for the region, the job would be more fulfilling.

Horrible Management

In my month working there, some major issues came up. Here they are in (semi)-chronological order: 1. They told me orientation would be only 4 hours, when it was actually 8 hours. I missed part of my shift at the job I was still working at that time. 2. Poor coordination. When I started in the bakery, nobody knew they were supposed to be training me - for 3 shifts in a row! This lead to me not being thoroughly trained in the bakery. 3. Shift scheduling. I was constantly scheduled to close the bakery on my own, despite not being properly trained and having only worked there for 12 hours. I rarely was able to complete the tasks provided in my 4 hours closing. Sometimes the bakery manager told people working before me to give me extra work to help me get better, but that extra work ended up being 3 hours on top of the already excessive work given to a new employee. 4. Payroll issues. I had to resubmit my direct deposit form 3 times before they finally paid me correctly. I didn't get my first 2 paychecks until I was 3 weeks in to working there - and paychecks get sent every week! The work itself was not bad, but management made this an unbearable experience.

productive fun accepting workplace and eployees.

Everyone was very nice, easy to work with as well as helpful and patient when training me. Communication between coworkers and management is awesome and easy to do.
