Amazing coworkers and staff but horrible leadership
Sales Associate (Ancien employé) –  Cambridge, ON2 juillet 2019
Sail Cambridge has so much potential to be a top dog in the outdoor retail industry even with its local competitors such as MEC and Atmosphere being located so close. However the lack of leadership qualities in majority of their management team has created an incredibly divisive and toxic environment. Sail Cambridge seems to have an "us versus them" mentality with their managers rather than using their position to mentor and develop a strong and experienced sales team (as outlined by their new 'profiles for success').

Management decides to spend their time disciplining staff, passing around false information, speaking in a condescending manner and holding minimum wage employees accountable for the success or failure of the business with little to zero training. They do not value their employees and do not display any desire to keep them, or build them into a stronger staff team. The store manager is known to be out of touch with his sales staff, and is the epitome of a hands-off manager. When delivering discipline has screamed at employees at a volume their co-workers could hear through a closed door and a wall.

They have an incredibly passionate and experienced sales team that really drive their business! However due to the low turnover rate, especially among their full-time employees, head office and the District manager neglect complaints about management and the incredibly low morale in the store.

This building has an incredibly negative energy.

KPI numbers are thrown around every morning with no plan or strategy as to how improve. The restructure into a more
plus... "corporate" business was executed poorly, and has taken an incredibly long time (as of the time of this post, positions still are not filled even though they were applied for my numerous, qualified, internal employees).

While the current store and assistant store managers hold their positions and continue to manage with the methods they use, this specific store will have incredibly limited success, if not total failure.

I would recommend this specific store to any customer because the people the floor staff that provide service to them are absolutely amazing!

I absolutely would NEVER recommend this place to anyone considering applying for employment and would even encourage them to seek employment elsewhere.

It should be a great place to work for the outdoor enthusiast. But it's not.

A good in between job
Customer Service Associate/Sales Representative (Ancien employé) –  Etobicoke, ON8 juin 2019
There is little to no job advancement with this company. Hour cutting and minimal wage does not make this job a long term commitment.
The perks are what most employees stick around for.
Expect to stay in the same role with little pay.

it was great at the beginning but went downhill
Cashier (Ancien employé) –  Montréal, QC19 mai 2019
It's not a bad place to work at if your goal is to move up the ladder b/c there's a high turnover rate at the store that I work at. it was a great place to work at when I first started but head office has made some changes which are not employees friendly. There's always some drama within the store every year without fail. I've been there for a while due to school so I was able to work minimal hours. They try to be very understanding to part timers and give them the time off that you ask for. Like I said, we've had some changes that have made us, employees, less happy and ready to work. They expect a lot (selling their VIP program by asking the customers lots of intrusive questions) but you get paid minimum wage. Also, expect a mandatory store wide meeting 2x a year and mandatory training for 3 hours 3x a year. we used to get free dinner/lunch during those meetings and whenever it was expected to be busy during that day (black Friday, Boxing day, Christmas Eve, etc) but that changed to us getting our own lunch and/or dinner.
Points positifs
not a lot of hours to give around.
Points négatifs
new management, getting basically frisked whenever you're leaving the store (lunch, smoke break, leaving for the day), can get written up for silly things (for going to the washroom).

Poor Management at all levels
Sales Associate (Ancien employé) –  Woodbridge, ON9 avril 2019
Management chooses to listen to customer opinions exclusively rather than verifying with employees. Favouritism between departments - some departments get more slack to do what they want while others get into trouble for taking a thirty-second break after restocking the entirety of the departments. Management does not defend employees when customers shout at them, choosing to focus on a customer relationship rather than the mental wellbeing of their employees. Little to no understanding of dealing with mental health issues such as panic attacks that can result from being understaffed during peak times. Refuse to hire security for shrink prevention choosing to place employees at risk in an attempt to stop theft and then are disappointed when things are still stolen. Complete invasive bag, coat, and locker checks when leaving the store for a break and shift change.
Points positifs
Good break room, discounted equipment
Points négatifs
Bad management, busy periods, physically intensive

Good first job
Sales Associate (Ancien employé) –  Vaughan, ON19 mars 2019
Nice place to work in terms of benefits and discounts, staff is amazing to work with but management have no clue how to run a business or communicate. What I saw was if you are in bed (literally) with management you get to hangout all day in their office as opposed to actually working on the floor. I enjoyed working here, the pay is minimum wage which is okay but the discounts compensate. For a first job to have in your resume I would recommend SAIL for sure, do they live by their values as per the employee hand book?...hardly. If you get on the wrong side they literally yell at you? Who does that in this day and age.

Its a fine place to work if you're passionate about the outdoors
HUNTING DEPARTMENT SALES ASSOCIATE (Ancien employé) –  Vaughan, ON29 octobre 2018
I enjoyed my short time at SAIL. I was able to meet many like minded people and was supported by them. Not everyone is passionate about the department they work in but they're still lovely people.

Good environment but inefficent
Sales Representative (Ancien employé) –  ottawa11 octobre 2018
Staff is really nice, most are knowledgeable and we all share a love for the outdoors.

My issues are with the outdatedness of the company.
- terrible product search program - slow and frustrating
- understaffed, especially during high season constant divide between cleaning and helping. there should be people that just clean.
- outdated scheduling, schedules are ONLY posted in the backroom. they say this is for privacy... but it's just outdated there are many programs that highlight privacy and allow your schedule privately emailed to the individual.
- You have to go online and print your own cheque which cannot for many e-deposits services be validated. Outdated - why not e-deposit...
- during my time there, I had little to know pk training unless it was a company rep that came... but until that time I just kind of had to wing it..
Points positifs
steady schedule, nice staff, discount, employee snack area, laid back
Points négatifs
lack of focus on product knowledge

Horrible
Associate (Ancien employé) –  Oshawa, ON12 septembre 2018
Terrible management, posess no empathy. Insensitive to employees feelings and thoughts, issues are brushed under the rug or ignored simply because store manager is afraid to deal with any conflict. Cheap! Nothing gets fixed properly, props all from dollar store. Huge lack of communication and unrealistic “chain of command” does not work. Management is allowed to treat employees horribly especially if not a “favourite”, but if anyone speaks up for themselves they are coined as “negative” and is ignored and mistreated until employee eventually leaves. There is no cross training allowed in other departments but are expected to lead customers to other store areas and help. Cut backs are huge! Low staff ratio to size of store but are expected to watch for theives, great and help all customers, plus get all our work done. Doesn’t work! Basically there is a huge lack of respect from upper management and in turn makes employees not care. Low morale, company events receive low participation and management doesn’t get it. The environment is a direct result of their leadership! Zero respect! Zero appreciation!
Points positifs
Discount. Freebies unless stolen from store manager
Points négatifs

Enjoyable place to work, but overall better environment is needed!
Cashier / Customer Service Representative (Ancien employé) –  Etobicoke, ON7 juillet 2018
A typical day at work consisted of a mix between a high and low volume environment. The customers and work flow are always enjoyable, but management and employee friendliness could be worked on.

Wouldn’t reccomend.
Sales employee (Employé actuel) –  Vaughan, ON16 juin 2018
I can’t say I’d recommend working here. Balancing personal life and this job is challenging since there seems to be a lot of scheduling conflicts, plus long, awkward hours. Management doesn’t even bother to get to know employees and their management style seems to lean towards instilling fear in workers.

There’s a lot of store theft and employees are generally blamed for it. It’s silly though, because this location is short staffed and has very little floor coverage. Plus they pay minimum wage, so why would an employee even care if something is stolen, especially if store managers show minimal interest in them all together.

I balance multiple jobs and management knows that but didn’t acknowledge or even attempt to find terms that we could both agree on.

I was also unsettled by some borderline racist comments the store managers made.

I would suggest working for a company that cares about its employees and acts professionally. Not here.
Points positifs
Free stuff from PKs
Points négatifs
