Great leadership and support I highly recommend the Royal Canadian Mint as a place of employment. Overall well managed with good pay. however career advancement option are very limited. Lack of support for low level employee, frequent job cuts, lack of communication between management.

A typical day at work is usually very productive and civic, The Mint is a good place to work. Being a union environment; things are being done primarily according to the collective agreement.

It was not at all what I anticipated I was expecting them to be more supportive and forward-thinking, philanthropic, concerned about sustainability, interested in the employees professional advancement and assessing people considering their strengths/weaknesses, studying their personality traits to ensure that they are in an environment where they will feel stimulated to strive. It comes down to nepotism. Especially in the HR dept They’re more concerned with gossip, penny-pinching and social status than doing what is ethical

Nice place to work but hard to get job advancement.
They have a great cafeteria and the food is good.

Parking is hard to find. Benefits are good. People are nice to work with.

Management is confused most of the time due to poor communication between departments. They care a lot about mental health and everyting else that contribute to well being of the employees.

The job was good but there is no chance of advancement in the company. I worked there for 3 years but never received a chance to get passed being a temp & getting laid off constantly & not knowing when you would be brought back

If you'd like to come out of there depressed, anxious and angry; this is the right place for you. Embarrassed to have that name on my resume. The worse you behave, the more opportunities/promotions you get. Makes no sense whatsoever, especially for a government job. What I've learned is that government is not all that great. It's worse than high school.

But! Good training, great benefits, relatively good pay. You just have to be willing to deal with drama monday to friday.

This was once a good place to work, with liberal mgmt. and easygoing coworkers but has degenerated to a politically toxic workplace, where mgmt exerts too much control over the union. Employees have to resort to being spies for mgmt and inform on each other, if they have any hope of moving up the ladder.

If you're not prepared to play the politics 'game', then this is a place that is bet avoided at all costs. It bears no resemblance to what it was in the distant past, before the burgeoning HR and Engineering depts took over. It used to be a relatively enjoyable workplace. Now, everyone looks over their shoulder and that's a shame.

Good work experience. Learned a lot about the inner workings of the Royal Canadian Mint.

Excellent work place for a summer placement.

First of all, there's nothing "royal" about this place. The Mint has been bleeding money for years with their numismatic business due to top level and middle management incompetence. There is no strategy in this organization. The only strategy is to lay-off and place blame on the hardworking employees as to why strategies aren't working.

Management:

The most inept, incompetent, low IQ management a company could have. Majority are clueless, with no outside the box thinking. They hire consultants to do their job and when it fails, they lay off and do it all over again. Majority of the management is linked with nepotism. You have husband and wife management combos that shield them from layoffs and are well protected. It's a disgusting place to see this go down when they are the ones who should be walked out.

You also have manager's in place with no relevant skill whatsoever - but are in place because they are well liked by the brass or a "yes-man" - willing to play the political game and tow the company line at the cost of their employees. It's sickening.

You also have middle manager's sucking up constantly to move up or protect themselves - you found this a lot throughout the organization only to move up in their rank and step on others.

Experience and Qualifications don't matter with this company. Only friendships and knowing the right people.

The only thing that drives management is the bonus - collecting fat cheques for doing little.

There are some nice people who work here but it's getting to the point where the good people are getting fired and

My job was to weight gold that was going to be melted. i also had assist other colleges who had injuries from different areas from the Mint.
I had to use highly precise weighing machines to do the job. I had to use Microsoft office to do the reports. I learned to be more accurate with my measurements. The hardest part was carrying heavy volumes of gold and the most enjoyable part was the comradely at work.

Anyone who works in production works on 1 week shift rotations, so it's really not possible to have a life outside of work.
The salary (when I worked there) was significantly higher than you'd find for similar positions anywhere else and the benefits were great. There is room for advancement, but it isn't always easy to make it happen.

Management isn't great (as a general rule) but they spend so much time having to tip toe around everything to protect their jobs, it isn't surprising. Management in the department I worked in changed more often than most people change underwear, which caused a lot of issues in the department due to the constant "regime" changes.

Not many people are happy there and most who stay only do it for the pay/benefits. Employee morale is possibly the lowest I've seen anywhere.

RCM seems like it would be a great place for career-oriented individuals, however, the immediate culture between management and staff is pretty corrosive.

Millions of dollars are wasted yearly. Projects brought to 90% completion and aborted. Reason: new managers didn't care to understand or assess existing work. Managers that have no useful expertise or experience in the specific area that they are impacting. It's truly sad that high turnover means constant course-corrections and very little achievement or value to the business.


The RCM is also plagued with incessant reorgs. This is a great excuse to explain why targets aren't being met or that projects are taking longer to deliver. It hides the incompetence of upper management as they seem incapable of setting on an org structure that works.


On a different note, the employees are great. Dynamic and always willing to follow their leaders, no matter how fickle they may be, to get the job done.


RCM pays well. On that, no one can reproach them. There is also a bonus structure in place.


However, managers get their bonus if 65% of quota is met, whereas union employees only get their bonus if 85% of quota is met. This should be the other way around. Employees do what you tell them to do. They do it well and are always willing to follow direction from leadership.


If leadership fails by making bad bets, implement poor strategies, or sets sub-optimal direction, then they should bear the brunt of poor performance against quota. Employees do what they are told to do.

This was my first real job. It is a great place to work as you learn a lot about coins. Eventually, I wanted to do something else and quit but for someone who wants job security and benefits, this is the place.

It,s a good place to work,people are friendly and had a good teamwork.Management provides all the necessary tools to all the employees to be more productive.Complete benefits for the permanent employees.They provide work uniform and work shoes for free.They provide free training to the employees who is willing to learn and apply to other department.The hardest part of the job they always change the work instructions that made us confused especially for the temporarily workers that works on and off.Royal Canadian Mint had an annual meeting with free big breakfast to all the employers.

Hostile Workplace, was assaulted by upper management. Would not recommended anyone work for this employer. Please understand this really did happen.
