If you a a person that likes hard labour I recommend this job. If you do not then this is the worst place to work. You never finish your job on time because of the office workers. They add orders in to the system late making it impossible for the bakery workers to ever finish on time. Workers are constantly stressed which causes a lot of arguments between workers. Management is the worst!

Portofino has grown exponentially and a victim of their own success. Read the history on how fast they have grown and compare it to Bakery industry standards. There is bound to be major roadblocks and headaches. They are catching up and putting teams in place to execute the next chapter in their business with an added focus on succession planning, training, and development. Things do change.....Wait and see.

Portofino expects high standards and commitment from their staff. They need to if they want to continue to deliver at the highest level in the industry.

The ownership of each and every employee is up to them if they want to succeed and be part of the solution and not the problem. We all control our own destiny.

If your passionate about the baking industry then you would be a good addition to their team.

I love Portofino! The company is expanding all across BC and the work is fast paced to keep up. It can be long hours but the people are friendly. It is not a job that you can slack. You have to want to work hard and the people who stay have been around for a long time. A lot of people reviewing on here no longer work for the company and I don't think show the true nature of working at Portofino.

Leadership is a revolving door, so starting out is hard - you don't know who to learn from. The work is steady and generally staff are friendly, but the management and leadership is definitely lacking - if it's a busy night or weekend, everyone else gets to go home and you're left there magically make it work. One or two nights is one thing, but when its week after week it clearly shows they're not interested in the wellbeing of staff. Steady place to work if you've got thick skin, low ambitions, and you don't mind the commute. Don't expect help from other departments - the first chance people get to cut and run, they will, and leave you to magically figure out how to fix their mistakes.

Worked in the warehouse. Most people were cool to work with but management was completely inept and refused to solve the smallest of problems. Pay was bad as a result of that because the hourly bonus based on pick rate would be terrible after wasting time fixing all of the problems they caused by being unorganized.
Really depressing place to work and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Whatever you do, don't work here under any conditions. The work is mind numbing, shifts can go as long as 12 hours a day and management is absolutely terrible, demeaning and rude.

This job will destroy your life.
To put it simply - management does not care about you or your work load. They will overwork you and underpay you, and loyalty means nothing. I put years into this company and was easily pushed out and replaced, as were a number of other employees that had years of hard, dedicated work.

If you want to be respected and valued, just find something else.

This job is a last resort. They will look for ways to make your work more stressful and difficult to achieve your required tasks. They will short staff your unit and then when you think you're free to go, they'll add more tasks to your work load from other groups.

The only decent thing are the people you work with. The environment is depressing, there is a stream of never ending and disruptive noise, to the point if the fire alarm goes off, you won't be able to distinguish it from all the other chaos (which happened. Twice).


Working here has damaged my overall physical health, be very careful working for this company.

This place isn't where you want to work, you can find better. They act like they are paying you a fortune when it's well below cost of living. Better off in a decent service establishment; the base pay is higher, plus tips you're set.

Free bread & wholesale purchases. Benefits package is acceptable I suppose, if you make it past six months.

Terrible place to work for but the wage is okay if you want to put up with bad management. A company taking over with some interesting dreams. One manager on production side seems normal old but packaging manager is passive aggressive and if he doesn't get his way he makes you the problem for failure.

Nobody here seems to know what they are doing everyday orders are screwed up the delivery trucks are all beat up the hourly wage is ridiculous since the slow workers end up making more than the fast ones

Not everyone's cup of tea. A lot of physical activity. It was fast paced. Best was if you finish before time you still get paid for the rest of the day but that is not easy specially for someone new

Atrociously managed, dead end, and no opportunity for advancement. I worked here for a while while interviewing at other places, and even that was too much. 10.5 hour shifts where other staff and management pressure you to not take your breaks until about 6.5 hours into the shift. Unhappy, disgruntled employees - for good reason, as some have been there for 4-5 years and earn $14.93. They currently offer a signing bonus if you can last 3 months there, which is a red flag in itself. Understaffed as they are not able to keep anyone for long, other than immigrants with little to no English skills that they can easily take advantage of. Also, the current labour market in Victoria prices Portofino out of the picture, there are many entry-level jobs starting around $18-22, and they seem to think their below-average wages should suffice for everyone.

It is Hard work and very very hot, they do not allow you to have water on the floor and it is not enough pay. Not enjoying the staff and work environment. people are stressed all the time and they only care about productivity, the reviews are accurate and they will drain the life out of you. Also there is a lot of overtime being expected of you. If you’re looking for a good job where you will be treated with

Owner and upper management do not support the workers. The Production Manager (aka head baker but they do not call him that because he apparently does not have certification) is rude, yells at staff and thinks the production team walks on water. They do not address any of their concerns, just sweep them under the proverbial rug. SOME other managers seem to have the right mindset and ideas of how to change things, but have no support and are not listened to.

Decent pay with plenty of opportunities for more if you can put up with the hot environment, long hours and some lazy/bad coworkers.

If your lazy, this job isn’t for you.
Early mornings (up to 2am start times) can be difficult, but if you put your head down and work hard, it can be very beneficial.

Good job if you need work but they will drain the life out of you. All smiles in front of you but behind your back all they care about are the orders and it does not end. Total sweatshop and it is getting worse. Dont waste your time woring for these guys. The owner also owns part of Islands West and they are the same...another poorly run hellhole.

Portofino is a fast paced environment, which I love because you are always busy and moving.
Management always seemed fair and you get rewarded for hard work. With the bonuses and reviews I was able to make a very competitive wage in just a short period of time.

It is hard work which I love, but have heard people complaining about.

Job security is great, especially being apart of such a fast growing business.

If you don't mind waking up early, it's a good job. The pay is pretty good. The health and dental plans should cover more but, I have seen worst packages.

Micro managed by one old fashioned out of date, unsafe boss with no little understanding of safety. Accident waiting. Management is pleasant at times. Management is obviously annoyed by owners ways.
