Great first job, but...
Petland is a great first job, whether you're a student or someone looking for part time work. However, part time hours are all you will be given unless you're a manager, or you pick up extra shifts/come in on your days off. There are a lot of opportunities to enhance your knowledge on animal care through online training and classes which I definitely recommend taking the time to do during your employment—it'll make helping guests and navigating your way through the store much easier. The animal care part of the job can be overwhelming, so be prepared to put in some elbow grease. Despite all of your hard work, don't expect a raise, even after years of dedication to the company.

Pay a base salary for not a base job.
The job is a lot for what you are assigned to do vs how much they pay you.Animal care is not really there. They care more about making sales than actually finding the right owner for the right pet.

Would not recommend
I was originally really excited to work for Petland. From the outside in, it seems like an fantastic company to work for. I thought the skills I would aquire would better prepare me for advanced positions in animal care, which I won't completely take away that I learned a lot in my time with petland but a lot of it was independent learning, meaning if you didn't take the time to learn about it outside of work, you didn't know about it. They offer training courses periodically, but its really only specifies to what petland wants you to know, so you can better sell their product. But if you really want to be able to meet all guest needs and support the animals in your care, you're gonna have to do a lot of your own training. That really sucks, because theirs lots of employees who just don't really care about animal care, and you're left picking up others slack, and a lot of it comes from management. I can't entirety blame management as they are treated like garbage from higher up and have such unrealistic expectations on them and the store Management barely get time off even though their are sales associates practically begging for hours. And finally the pay is terrible, with little to no advancement as your position advances. Head office doesn't take any recommendations on how to better your store or the animal care in your store. They are very set it their own ways. And are very only about money. You get written up if you don't get enough sales, and you have to put your name on every sale you do. But your ssales can be taken away from you, simply by someone saying it was them before you. I've had managers who have watched me work with customers all day, and come up to me that same day and question my work ethic because no sales were being put under my name. It can be very highschool like at times. Lots of gossip, drama and unnecessary pettiness. Head office does not care about the animals at all. If one falls sick, their favorite solution is just put it down. Because it's the "easiest" option. I enjoyed the friends I made at petland. But overall the company was draining, and could use many improvements on how staff are treated and trained. Including managers. I can't explain how frustrating it is dealing with a guest even as a new employee and have a manager not be able to support you because they have zero knowledge or experience in animal care. I have had a manager just say look it up when I needed help rather then actually support us.Overall petland was an expierience, but not one I would recommend.

Poor Management
Was rudely excused due to being tested with Covid and not having results back fast enough to my managers liking. Manager is extremely unprofessional and hung up the phone on me. Petland gave me nothing but grief. Work there for 3 years and expect to be still be payed minimum wage. Honestly, the animals are fun. The management is bad, always has been. They act like children.

very fun and engaging workplace
petland is a great first job- you learn so much about animal care. The managers are very inclusive and nice. Opening shifts- the managers WILL expect you to be on the floor a lot during the day, fronting and facing or helping guests, so that makes it a little harder to complete all 2 pages of the morning tasks in such little time, but Overall if you are interested in animal care and want to have an engaging and interactive job working at petland may be the choice for you!
