Amazing getting to know the fur babies that walk through the store door. I had great coworkers and was fortunate enough to land some great managers. The job was tough at times, but the friends you make in your coworkers and the pets make some of it worth it.

Great job in retail

Your experience working with Pet Valu depends on what store you work for. There are corporate and franchise owned store. I love my job as Store Manager, upper management is very supportive and always available to help with any questions or concerns. Pet Valu head office does a great job sending memos and keeping the store informed about products or customers. There are many issues with the warehouse, this is bound to happen during these times. However the systems and processes used in the warehouse are very outdated and negatively impacts stores for sales or efficiency.

Fun job with great coworkers.

Have been with PetValu for over 6 years. Have many amazing coworkers who have been here 5+ years as well. Fast paced days, makes the time pass quickly.

Over worked underpaid at store level

Company has big expectations for its part timers which makes them leave quickly. Managers get blamed for not doing enough to curve bad behaviors however dm is the one who approved action. Dm talks to management team about other managers on the team. Support is had to find. Broken promises are common. All responsibility no authority. All the push back you could ask for everyone outside store level pushes issues back to store level.

Working for corporate was really good- franchise not a good experience

Working for the corporation was awesome! They treat employees very well, yearly raises, benefits, 2 weeks paid vacation time. Then the store was bought and turned to franchise, Working for the franchise side of it was not good. The franchisee was rude. Had ZERO interest in working with a manager at all- treated the staff like we were morons and we didn’t know anything- got several complaints from customers about them and when it was brought to their attention we got in trouble for it. Weren’t allowed to change anything or do anything even though we had worked at that location for years before they had gotten there. I do not recommend working for this company unless it’s a corporate store.

Ok job

There is no such thing as a typical day at Pet Valu. Some days you were run off your feet, other days it seemed you had all the time in the world to get your tasks done. Often work alone for half the shift, made covering the the whole store a little difficult

NO JOB SECURITY - If you work for a corporate store, they can sell it without any heads up and you ARE NOT GARENTEED TO BE KEPT ON THE NEW OWNER, Experience does NOT alaways matter, Not enough hours to properly maintain the store to the company standards, Often stayed late or started early without pay, would buy store supplies out of pocket because there was no budget allowance for things we needed, very rarely had 2 days off consecutively

Great family environment

Absolutely love my company and band. Its been a great career! The knowledge I have learn about the ongoing growth in the business, working in the animal field will be very good work experience to take to my next step in my career.

Enjoyable Part Time Work

Flexible, depending on your franchise owner and store manager, part time work only available. Great employee discount. Good part time work. Always something to do so the shifts fly by. The work itself is also enjoyable.

A great company to work for. They try hard to work with their staff and find ways to make new transitions workable. Customer base is nice as well, a great mix of people in my locations.

I worked for this company over 17 years ago so I can't really say what the culture is like now. The franchise I worked at I ran. I didn't have very much interaction with the head office but didn't have any issues when I did

not a great company

Did not like the company, to many DM's, nobody knows what there doing. I only enjoyed working with the public, and some staff. Hardest part was trying to please all DM's The most enjoyable was to work with the public

Lack of support

As a store manager you needed to be very self reliant you never saw your DSM. Clients and their animals are the only think that keep you in your job. No career opportunities

Wonderful Company to work for if you are an animal lover!

I enjoyed the 7 years I spent with Pet Valu, my ultimate goal was to build sales and buy the store I was running. Unfortunately the downside to working for a franchising organization is that you have no job security and my store sold before I could try to buy it for myself.

Good learning experience but poor compensation

I worked as a sales associate in a franchise store for three years, and then in a corporate store several years later for 3 short months before being promoted to manager of a brand new location. I was hired as a manager with little previous management experience but a lot of passion and knowledge within the company. Initially, I was on cloud nine. I learned a lot of things in a short period of time and loved my day to day work. Regular customers, seeing cool new pet products, learning about things i care about and interacting with like minded people. Coworkers at the store level were great and my first DSM was very supportive. Scheduling, ordering, merchandising to store standards and stock count procedures are some of the main rocks. Things change a lot and communication is poor. There is little praise from upper management and rude and demeaning comments have been made to me as well as my staff. Labour hours are very limited and you really struggle to complete all expectations within what is allowed. You and your staff will spend a LOT of time alone in the store which poses safety risks and can be stressful during busy times. No one wants to wait at the counter. And no on wants to see a customer leave because they couldn't be served fast enough. A lot of pressure put on store appearance and things being exactly a certain way, when realistically, it is hard to constantly meet these expectations while still being able to serve customers and answer their many questions. Hourly compensation is poor and advancement in this department is hard to get. Customers are a -

Disorganized and forever undecided.

These people can't make up their minds, they keep trash people and fire good people with the lame "the company is going in a different direction". Upper management has no knowledge of actually running a retail store, they don't work in them and won't learn to work in them. You work hard for minimum wage, often alone. No chance for advancement, but they'll let you run the store for less than the actual store manager makes. That's called taking advantage!!! Don't ask to transfer, you will be treated new, with same pay and barely any hours. There is NO praise within this company. You are not allowed to be creative and everything is "store standards". Never complain about a fellow employee, nothing will be done! As well, don't get pregnant ladies, you are still expected to do this physical job with no help... and if you want reduced physical work, you need to provide notes throughout your pregnancy. You have a better chance at any one of this company's competitors!
