I have worked at Pet Valu for around two years, during those two years I had some positive experiences with the job but I unfortunately had more negatives. The company does not offer enough hours for the stores to cover all the hours properly. Most times you would work most of a shift alone with no one else in the store - you would be stretched beyond measures to help customers within a timely matter, give the best customer service and keep the store looking presentable. The worst is when you're having to close the store alone while especially after someone leaves at 5pm and you're alone until 9pm trying to help customers, clean, order, face the store, dog washes, laundry, overstock, cash customers out, sweep/mop, etc. Management is not fair, there is definitely favourites presented. The store manager, district manager, and company itself let me down when I was personally attacked/harassed by a fellow co-worker and I brought it to their attention and NOTHING was done. The co-worker got no discipline, no suspension, NOTHING rather I the victim had to work at another location for a month or so to be separated from my co-worker who harassed me. I am very disappointed and disgusted at how this situation was dealt with. I found that this workplace had a lot of workers who were bullies, played mind games and did not care about their workers properly. You're told one thing and another thing happens. There is no respect or appreciation from this company/workplace. You're expected to go over and beyond, yet the company doesn't have your best interests in hand nor even protect you when - plus...
interacting with customers & their pets
long hours, work most of shift alone, closing alone, stressful, toxic workplace, toxic co-workers, no guarantees, constant whispering behind your back, no respect, only one break - 30 mins only
Management is very toxic High turnover rate Environment is very stressful at timesCustomers are hit or missThe job in general was fine Not for people who hate heavy lifting Good place to be if you love animals Too much pressure from management Too much responsibility Depending on location closing alone at night
Ok discount fun to see animals
Awful management toxic environment
I worked at PetValu for almost three years. I absolutely loved the job and getting to know the customers. However, management was terrible. After constant complaints and nothing ever getting resolved.. I ended up having to leave because of the harassment from the manager. No one in the company cared that this was taking place.

It's too much work for little pay. You are expected to do everything that a manager does with minimum wage. You have to sweep floors, then mop, be a cashier, sales associate, customer services, order stuff for people, a lot of facing, shipment.. not worth the little pennies they give you in return.
Worked at both locations and the owner at Laird treats you, customers, etc. like garbage, always fighting (even with her husband in front of everyone including customers), disrespectful, racist, crazy. If you like yourself stay far far away from this place.
Over the three years I've been at Pet Valu, I generally enjoyed the work. There were lots of expectations and things to do but they were all manageable. Most customers were good, but retail is retail. I was not happy with my pay.
This is my first job (hired at 16 years old), the company so far is great, I work for a corporate store so management is quite easy and you get to know people that work in other stores quite quickly. The dynamic in the store between people that work there is quite good but you can get on the bad side of people if you aren’t holding up your responsibilities. My manager has been very supportive of me in giving me flexible hours to work and there is always something to do. During peak hours there are usually two people working but in off peak you can expect to be alone and be able to open and close without aid from someone else. You are expected to be active with customers greeting them in a timely manner and being a reliable source of information for them while also performing daily tasks. Communication with upper management is good and they are an email away with any sort of concerns you have and communication with head office is great as well with the CEO having visited a few of the stores during the summer. There are set expectations there for how displays should be set up during each flyer period and brand standards. There have been an issue with new managers not being trained enough though so this is an issue which effects the store greatly. Training at the start is time consuming but worth it, you become knowledgeable not just about dog and cat nutrition but specifics about certain brands and other animals as well. New modules have been added since I’ve started so there is always new information to be learned. There is also a part of the LMS that allows you to make - plus...
In my experience of working with pet valu, i gained quite a bit of extensive knowledge in the pet industry. It is very fast paced and the owner is great. the main manager is wonderful aswell, however if you get put with the temporary replacement, they dont accomodate you or your life.and basically, if you have kids, too bad for you.
I was with Pet Valu for just over three years and loved every minute. The other staff were extremely helpful when it came to training and questions about your own personal animals. It is a great opportunity to advance your knowledge of animals while being in a enjoyable work environment.
I enjoy the staff and overall have had good communication with management, just wish there was more opportunity for advancement and more benefits for long time employees.
. Does no appreciate the work of the staff. Staff does the work and managers benefit. Hard place to work for. Never any recognization of hard work. Lots of events you have to do with your own money. Never a thank you
I worked here for a bit a few years ago and loved my coworkers and our customers. We had a lot of fun most of the times when pets when come in and we would have rescues come in as well. The management style isn't the best. The owner won't spend the money when it is needed and promises bonuses and then doesn't deliver on them.
A typical day at Pet Valu is mostly lots of cleaning, helping people find what they need, asking them about their day and stocking shelves. The hardest part of the job is when you either don't have what the customer needs and gets mad at you, or just when customers come in to just yell at you. The most enjoyable part of the job that outweighs this is the dogs and all the other pets that come in.
Fun workplace where you get to help people learn about their pet's specific needs. I learned a lot about pet nutrition as there's a large course you have to complete within your first few months there. Management is inconsistent Expected to be as skilled as a car salesperson, at minimum wage pay There are dogs there almost everyday, and they don't judge you.
Although it can be difficult to learn the different brands of products (food, toys, treats), the knowledge is useful even outside of the job. In addition to helping pet parents find what their pets need, there also were animals for adoption that you care for.
Northern Alberta has THE WORST DM you could ever encounter. Doesn’t do her job and doesn’t answer questions that only she has to give the answer to. She picks her favourite store and just creates drama for the others. Employees are being treated unfairly and extremely underpaid. They will do anything to not have to give you a raise.
