Management treated all employees unfairly regarding pay and overall interactions. Punished for being sick Basic necessities like soap in the bathrooms and a lunch break were not provided Store was cleaned with non pet-friendly chemicals
People bring their dogs in and you can pet them
Management is corrupt and inconsiderate
Pet Valu Albany was an amazing place to work! You quickly get absorbed into the family atmosphere with management who truly care for your professional and personal life. Everyday was a joy to go to work. I will miss my Pet Valu family very much as I moved to ON.

I’ve had stressful jobs before but PV... seriously the best environment ever. I don’t know if I just got really lucky with my coworkers but also customers are also 1000x more friendly too! It’s never stressful and it’s super relaxed sometimes, it doesn’t even feel you’re working! I love going into work and especially meeting all the animals that come in too :)
Worked at this particular location for about 7 months and could no longer take the incessant abuse by the owner of the store The owner actually assaulted me at one point, which was witnessed by the manager, and we were both in shock The owner also loved to send emails to all staff berating us for how we would behave at work, pay and absences, instead of speaking to us personally about her issues. Could no longer take the intimidation, assaults, and agression on behalf of the owner of this Pet Valu and HAD to elave
easy going, could bring pets to work, great customers, free products and discounts
Typical day at work consists of handeling customers, making sure you give them the best possible advice, help them find what they’re looking for, and answering their questions accurately. I learned a lot about animals and their diets. They offer a “pet expert” certificate program which is full of information. Management was very easy to deal with, very much a family atmosphere. Most enjoyable part of the job was the animals.
Pet Valu is committed to training their employees on how to educate customers on feeding their pets. A typical day at work includes answering customer questions about different brand of foods and cashing people out. It is fun to be apart of a great team who all work together as well. Hardest part of the job is learning about all the different brands of food, but once you grasp the main ones and what they do for different types of breeds it is okay. The most enjoyable part is seeing the fluffy customers or playing with kittens.
I love my job at Pet Valu. Since day one I've learned so much about animals and their proper care than I would have had I not applied. It's a self-directed job, meaning you tell yourself what needs to be done most days, so it builds your responsibility and accountability. You also get to see people's face light up when you give them the advice they need, or a new idea to bring excitement into their pet's lives.
Make meaningful connections with customers, be around animals
long hours, slow spells in customer walk ins.
I love working at pet valu, the atmosphere is fun and welcoming! I specifically enjoy the opportunities to assist customers in their specific needs for their pets.
great training program given when you're first hired
starts at minimum wage
Company has really great core values and gives great product knowledge in the training. You get to work with animals and diagnose their problems through their dietary issues. Staff changes often due to lack of knowledge or willingness to learn. Not a great student job.
work with animals
lack of work flexibility
A typical work day is helping customers, cleaning, and putting out stock. After working here for 3 years I have learned a lot about the pet food industry, however, this was no thanks to the pet valu training program. The training program does not teach you any useful information and you are forced to learn as you go on the floor. I work for a franchise store and I find that the management is very sloppy. There is no consistency at my location. The workplace culture is fun, but can be stressful. The hardest part of the job is trying to deal with management. The best part of the job is dealing with the customers and their pets.
play with cats in store
inconsistent hours, management is not great
I had an overall adequate experience with Pet Valu. I enjoyed helping the customers and taking care of the animals that would come into the store. However, I think that the salary is lower than one would deserve for the amount of work they do, it is extremely difficult to get time off, and sick days and benefits are non existant. If you are a student who is looking to work a few shifts a week, I would recommend this job. If you're looking for something more permanent however, I would recommend finding employment elsewhere.
Around animals, clean working environment
high demands for low pay
If you're lucky enough to have animals for adoption at the store you work at it's a really fun experience, getting those animals adopted is a really rewarding experience. My store manager was great but people higher up in the company are out of touch.
cute animals all day
This was my first job and the most fun. All the staff got along so well and I worked my way up to become the Assistant Manager. We had a photography room, doggy daycare, grooming, and a cat adoption room. When you are surrounded with that many animals and great people it is really hard to dislike your job.
I worked at Pet Valu for over a year and during that time I had never felt so put off by a workplace. (I worked in retail for over four years before being employed by this store, so I'm pretty well versed in how frustrating customer-facing roles can be. Pet Valu went above and beyond this.) First off, my interview was conducted in March of 2014 and I was not contacted until August of 2014. The manager at the time called me and said my first day was the next day. (I lated found out I would be replacing someone that was about to be fired.) Second, the district sales manager is, as someone else said, not the nicest person. (This is a huge understatement.) Myself and three of my colleagues send harassment claims about her to Human Resources. (These claims were never addressed, as far as I've heard.) My store manager was moved to another store after being given THREE DAYS NOTICE. The new manager was constantly cruel to me and threatened my job weekly. He gave me write-ups for made-up reasons and ridiculed me in front of my co-workers and customers. When I was hired, my position was sales associate. I was going to school at the time and only wished to work 20 hours a week. I ended up doing many other things such as paperwork, scheduling and the occasional order. I was also given 40 hours a week, even after asking to be given less. Throughout this, I only made minimum wage. In fact, when minimum wage in Manitoba went up from $10 to $10.40 an hour, payroll did not notice or apply the change to my paycheck for four months. They also went on to blame me for not telling them - plus...
animals are fun
cruel upper management, low pay, long hours
You get to meet pets and their parents all day long and provide necessary information and advice for their pets needs. Very fun place to work!
Meeting pets, long hours, lots of shifts
delivery - some items are very heavy
