Loved working there. Definitely a good job. Managers were horrible and chose favorites all the time. So if they didnt like you they would treat you like garbage. They were always rude to the groomer there. Co workers were pretty great. The only problem were the managers and assistant managers. And the owner.

Great place to work

Great place to work, very relaxed. Just not good pay and steady hours. Good place for students to work, as most pet valus are flexible with the schedule.

Productive, interactive and fun workplace

I loved working here because as an employee I had the opportunity to work with a variety of people and their pets. The management was excellent and she always adapted or adjusted work schedules to meet your life. Overall, it was a great culture working here and the most enjoyable part of the job was working the truck days, even though it can be tiring.

Workplace culture at Pet Valu

The job wasn't all that enjoyable except for the interaction with customers and their pets as well as your coworkers. You receive plenty of worthwhile knowledge particularly on the best nutritional food to feed your pet. Management left a lot to be Desired!!

Fun place with no movement in company

Fun environment. The owner/manager will set the tone for the rest of the employees. Minimum wage not enough to sustain long term employees. Need better wages.

low-stress, fun job where you meet great people

the store was never really busy so we mostly worked on other stuff like dusting, merchandising, and freshness tracking. you become close with your regulars and learn lots about dog food with their training system.

Great place to work!

I was a in store sales representative at Pet Valu for several months and I had a great time working there. The other employees were always knowledgeable and friendly. The management was always easily approachable, and able to deftly balance Customer Service and Employee needs. The store owner was able to cultivate a atmosphere of family within the employees and customers. The most challenging aspects of a job like Pet Valu is the ability to become knowledgeable about the different brands to discern the needs of the customer and provide them with the most relevant information about the product that they were buying. My favourite part of the job was the interaction with customers. Especially when I was able to help them with find what they were looking for.

Horrible management

I have worked here for almost 6 months, the management is horrible, there’s no security cameras or anything, there’s so much drama between co workers. I work full time hours but don’t get benefits because I’m classify as “part time” . Went to hr about the issues I’ve had and they didn’t help. Get paid minimum wage, not worth it.

This job was fun at the start, and I would suggest to anyone who wants to learn about animals to work there. PV taught me alot about animals even though I try to be very educated myself.

My manager is a hard-working supportive person, is also flexible with scheduling. The staff are trustworthy and contribute to a positive work environment. Customers are often friendly.

Hostile work environment

Love my regular customers and most my coworkers. Manager is very unprofessional, bully’s who she doesn’t like, talks inappropriately about other staff as if it were high school. Takes motivated and happy people and leaves them Completely defeated and feeling dumb even though they weren’t properly trained or given clear job expectations. District manager never comes to the store and when they do they just tell you the store looks wrong and leave. Very disappointing.

Can be fantastic/ A Nightmare

It depends on who the store manager is, and who the district manager is. It's fantastic when the folks in these positions are great. They do have a U.C. Davis program that employees must pass, and it does teach you a lot about pet nutrition. If your boss is great, the job is usually quite fun, and you get to hang out with critters all the time.

Auto deducted, unpaid lunches, that you often dont have time or coverage to take, unreasonable expectations, with regards to how much time a large task will take, minimum wage and annual raises, are typically about 5 to 20 cents more per hour, Head Office doesn't work as one cohesive unit, management from various departments all demand conflicting ideals

Time will go by excruciatingly slow.

Learned about pet food ingredients, no doubt. But, there are hardly any customers throughout the day, and most of the customers who do come in will typically know exactly what they are going to buy before they even came in, so they often don't need your assistance... so you find yourself pacing a lot throughout the tiny store for the most part. Worked a full day here, and by the end of the day I knew it wasn't for me. And on top of all this, they didn't even pay me for my shift, despite agreeing to pay me and telling me my wage. Not worth it.

Not recommended

Fronting and stocking shelves, lots of heavy lifting, you normally work on your own. Responsible for store janitorial work. Poor management and upper management. You do not go to district manager or HR with issues as they strictly work for the company. High staff turnover. They lose a lot of great staff because of the managers (micro manage, there way or the highway, even if not up to company standards). Some managers ran down their staff in front of customers and other staff. Most co-workers were awesome to work with and dealing with customers was a great part of the job. Most discouraging part of the job is when you work by yourself, lineup at the till and customers waiting for assistance, lost a lot of customers because of this. If you worked a full shift you received a lunch break, but there were no coffee breaks allowed.

I really loved working for Aurora, she was so great. I loved working with the people and their pets, although I had to stop working there because of my school situation I will always point people with pets in Aurora's direction, she is awesome!

Productive and fun workplace

My experience at petvalu was interesting. The staff is very welcoming and nice. The training provided is adequate. I learned that you need to work well in a team got get tasks finished and always maintain a positive attitude. The most enjoyable part was taking care of the animals.

One of the worst jobs i have worked.

I barely worked there. About a months time and it felt forever. Was hired on the spot and given a key, only training is for how to work the till -no training about procedures or anything. Expected to know and understand everything without being shown, not eased into physical work no 15 mins of break only unpaid 30 mins. Manager talks about current and ex employees behind their backs to other employees and customers and thinks its ok to yell at an employee and say they have no right to speak.

Fun place to work

The atmosphere at pet valu is great. The workers are friendly and the customer base is ordinarily pleasant. You get to work with cats from the humane society which is great for cat lovers. The amount you can learn in a sort period of time about pet products is crazy. If you have pets at home you can apply the knowledge learned to your own pets health. There is even a paid time frame given to new employees to complete pet video courses provided from the university of california. All of these things are great; however, the stores are normally full for employment. It is hard to not only be hired on full time but, also be promoted with more responsibility and higher pay.
