Typical Pet Store Job - With a Little Extra

Avis en vedette

L'avis le plus utile, sélectionné par Indeed
Classic retail job, ring up the customers, sell the company branded products etc. What sets Pet Valu aside is the franchise management. For better or for worse the owners/manager really do care about the store, and in some part their staff. Training goes above and beyond that of a regular retail job to try to make you a bit of an expert in your field (even if you aren't paid like one). Overall if you enjoy learning and discussing about pet nutrition and care you will enjoy this company.

very boring

Pet Value at first is a very nice place to work but the thing about it is that it gets boring after a while there's barely anything to do and if there's nothing to do in the store you have to unnecessarily clean out cans’ shelves dog food check for expiry dates basically repeat the same process every day. it became very tiring and boring even when you try and while away time spending time doing what you're supposed to do, they try and hurry up and like what's the point of hurrying you up if there is actually nothing to do, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone unless you actually really devoted in spending time doing nothing.

Some good coworkers, horrible management.

Managers were awful and treated staff disrespectfully. Other employees hired did not have any prior knowledge or experience and then were not taught how to do the job correctly.

Points positifs

Willing to discuss wages

Points négatifs

Minimal to no breaks, rude coworkers and managers, took an extensive toll on personal mental health, unfair wages

Good Management

Managers were good but the owners expected a lot of work for little pay. Extensive training required when hired for the role. Good job for someone who is very interested in pet care

Easy going depending on management

Pet valu in Canada is a chain so you will have different experiences for every store. Personally my store is very chill, we have a very understanding manager that is easy to work with and I wouldn’t trade her for anything. But the store owner and operator are different, anytime they are around it’s very stressful and tightly wound. This job can go both ways it can be great if you like talking to customers, stocking, but there is never down time even if there is nothing to do they will find something. You will get great training it was 2 weeks, but Expect to be on your feet all day. There are no paid breaks but personally at my store you can get write offs which are returned or broken merchandise you can take home for free.

Points positifs

Training, discount

Points négatifs

Unpaid breaks, stressful store owners

Bad management, and a stressful workplace

Don't work here. Believe me. Pay is average, lots of workplace drama, it is not worth all the hassle. You receive subpar treatment. Bad management. The benefit are there is the occasional animal, but not as often as you'd hope. Overall, not worth it to work here, don't put yourself through it. A lot of work and not enough benefit from it. Regular lifting of 40+ lbs and at least 2-3 orders recieved a week. There are pretty regular staffing issues so be prepared for that if applying. I am rating 2 stars instead of 1 because not EVERY store is the same.

Points positifs

Dogs

Points négatifs

Stress, drama, bad managment

Toxic workplace

Probably the worst workplace I’ve been with. Co workers constantly gossiped about one another, and management didn’t have any compassion or respect. Anything you told or asked someone in private or confidence would automatically be known in the workplace, resulting in talking about you behind your back. There are much better places to work at, trust me.

Points positifs

Get to see animals everyday

Points négatifs

Disrespect, gossip, management

Applicants beware

Woking at Pet Valu in my experience was like watching a remake of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Management picks and chooses favourites, and if you aren't willing to suck up to management and involve yourself in gossip, or be a tattle tale to management, you will most likely be targeted by them. Those who are favourited by management are not only authorized to bully and order around the other workers, but it felt as though they were encouraged. It makes the environment very uncomfortable to work in, especially when you are only trying to do your job but feel like you have to defend yourself against management every shift. The head manager of my location refused to hire any male employees, so the entire team is made up of females. As you can probably imagine, this resulted in the girls pinning against one another rather than contributing to a team effort. It felt as though there was nothing I could do to make management happy. There would be days that I would come home exhausted after repetitively lifting and facing 40lb bags, and it would be so frustrating to know that even when I would be trying my hardest, management would still try to find something to pick on me for. The pay seems decent at first, and you may be fooled to believe that this job is a really great opportunity, but take caution. I have six years worth of retail experience at multiple job locations. This has been by far the worst. The $12.50/hr is not worth the berating that you will face working for this franchise. Apply elsewhere.

Perks: animals, knowledge. Cons: people

Worked at the busiest location in wpg. Training within the first month gives you a dollar raise, however it is to be done on your own time. Constantly was learning about pet care/nutrition each day of working from customers and coworkers. A typical day included stocking, helping customers, cleaning. Lots of times it wasn’t busy and that’s when you have to find things to do; when it’s busy you’re pushed to greet the customer and shop with them. Management was awful, manager would pick favourites and people would constantly talk behind your back and you never knew who to trust. Made working very stressful. Toxic environment.

Well organized

Management is all over the place, don’t listen to well to availablility. Very easy to pick up and understand. The customers are great, as well as the staff members. You can go into this job with very little knowledge and leave with all the information on everything for pets you need.

Decent place, good people

Decent place, good people, close to where I lived, so overall it was a pretty nice place to work. I enjoyed working with the animals there, and most of my days were fairly easy-going.

Excellent company - Franchise owners are Independant

Pet Valu has an amazing work culture and it shows with the excellent service, clean stores and pride staff takes in the job. Note: Stores are individually franchised. Some store owners can be difficult. Advice: Caution who you work for.

Hostile Environment Created by Management

Pet Valu was probably the worst job I have ever worked at. For the entire time of my employment, I was always uneasy going into work and while being there. The managers were manipulative and bait you into thinking this was the best career move and then treat you horribly. I have never been anxious about going into work or being at a job in my employment history but this place never sat well with me. Management would tell you to come to them with problems but once you did, use it against you and drop your name to other employees. They would tell you to keep busy but most of the time would just stand there delegating work and micro managing you. My manager in particular knew it would make me uncomfortable and continue to hover while I tried to do things. Icing on the cake is my dog passed away shortly before I quit and they made me feel bad for needing time off saying "we need you to come in for the rest of your shifts, if you need time you can sit in the back room." They'll ask you to get involved and be apart of the team but as soon as you have an idea, it will be shot down. Honestly such a hostile and unhealthy environment. Slightly above minimum wage to be doing lifting labor almost all day from stocking 40LBS+ Bags and doing delivery on truck days with NO benefits. (Would make sense to include some given the amount of strain on your back) When I finally quit, I was shamed over quitting and treated absolutely horribly. I ended up finding out my management had been talking about me, making up stories of things I "said" and telling employees. Even AFTER I -

Responsible for all customer service activities which includes product information, inquiry recommendations, processing payments for purchases, stocking shelves and merchandizing. As key holder I am trusted to open and close the store, balance deposits in addition to serving customers.

Awful, awful, awful.

I worked at Pet Valu for over a year and during that time I had never felt so put off by a workplace. (I worked in retail for over four years before being employed by this store, so I'm pretty well versed in how frustrating customer-facing roles can be. Pet Valu went above and beyond this.) First off, my interview was conducted in March of 2014 and I was not contacted until August of 2014. The manager at the time called me and said my first day was the next day. (I lated found out I would be replacing someone that was about to be fired.) Second, the district sales manager is, as someone else said, not the nicest person. (This is a huge understatement.) Myself and three of my colleagues send harassment claims about her to Human Resources. (These claims were never addressed, as far as I've heard.) My store manager was moved to another store after being given THREE DAYS NOTICE. The new manager was constantly cruel to me and threatened my job weekly. He gave me write-ups for made-up reasons and ridiculed me in front of my co-workers and customers. When I was hired, my position was sales associate. I was going to school at the time and only wished to work 20 hours a week. I ended up doing many other things such as paperwork, scheduling and the occasional order. I was also given 40 hours a week, even after asking to be given less. Throughout this, I only made minimum wage. In fact, when minimum wage in Manitoba went up from $10 to $10.40 an hour, payroll did not notice or apply the change to my paycheck for four months. They also went on to blame me for not telling them -

Hard work, but excellent training

**I worked for Pet Valu the corporation, not a franchise. This review is strictly based on working at a corporate location. ** Pet Valu has an excellent training program. I felt very confident with the knowledge they armed me with for dealing with customers. They had exams that every employee was required to take, as well as seminars that were put on by the different pet food companies. It can be a lot of hard work. It's not just front end work like a lot of people expect. A lot of it is dealing with delivery; hauling bag after bag of 40lb dog food bags (or cat litter!) onto shelves that are well over your head. Pet Valu, for an 8 hour shift, gives you one unpaid 30 min break...and that's it. They say that you can have 2 15's...but if you try and take one you're in a lot of trouble. You're constantly on call (no matter what your position is), the district manager (at the time) was not a very nice person (trying to be polite here). That's not just my opinion, it was known chain-wide. Basically it's a good place to work if you don't mind being used a bit. They do teach you a lot about nutrition, but they work you like a dog and pay you very little for it. Oh, and corporate sold our store to a franchiser even though they promised they wouldn't...so job security is kind of shaky.

fun place to work, other employers were nice and understanding, cute dogs

A typical day here was fun. I got to handle dogs all day and make sure they got clean so that they could get groomed by the professional groomers. I learned a lot more about stocking and costumer service as well as learning how to deal with dogs properly. My co-workers were very nice and understanding even when I didn't know something. We joked around a lot and got along well. The hardest part of the job was when the dogs did not want to listen to me but it was still an enjoyable volunteer experience.

Points positifs

nice people, got to work with dogs

Points négatifs

sometimes got bit, stock could get pretty heavy
