Great job in retail

Your experience working with Pet Valu depends on what store you work for. There are corporate and franchise owned store. I love my job as Store Manager, upper management is very supportive and always available to help with any questions or concerns. Pet Valu head office does a great job sending memos and keeping the store informed about products or customers. There are many issues with the warehouse, this is bound to happen during these times. However the systems and processes used in the warehouse are very outdated and negatively impacts stores for sales or efficiency.

Points positifs

Health care programs for management, flexible scheduling, support from management

Points négatifs

It is a retail job; working holidays, dealing with upset customers

productive workplace

Pet valu is really a nice place to work. Management is friendly. People are multi cultural. I really enjoy working this place, although the job is easy but need person to bear responsibility and tackle stress easily.

No future, no loyalty towards teams.

Company is turning over most all Senior team now. Since former ceo and his girlfriend, the former VP marketing left company. Ops should be cleaned out. Most of ops/sales team is complacent and lacks leadership. Great products, best private label foods in the Industry.

No support

Supports and enables childish behavior at the expense of better employees. Terrible pay for store expectations in presentation and customer service and knowledge.

Terrible owner/manager (Laird & Esander/ Donlands & Danforth)

Worked at both locations and the owner at Laird treats you, customers, etc. like garbage, always fighting (even with her husband in front of everyone including customers), disrespectful, racist, crazy. If you like yourself stay far far away from this place.

Fine

Started at the company as a fresh high school graduate and watched the company undergo massive changes in my time spent working there. It was a good company to work for, there could have been more integral changes along the years.

Productive and Fun work environment

The most enjoyable aspect of this work is being able to interact with customers and animals and discuss the importance of products to the customer and their pet. The work environment is very relaxed and enjoyable. Coworkers are friendly and knowledgeable

Points positifs

Getting to give treats and pets to pet customers

Points négatifs

Long shifts

Points positifs

Doggos and cats

Points négatifs

Being afraid of the owners, having hours cut on a whim

Great organization with growth potential in the pet food, supply and services sector

- Dynamic organization with rapid expansion strategy. - Some very capable people in place to support growth. - Management driven purely by numbers. - Insecurity amongst employees about their role in the future. - Plenty of opportunities for people who work smart and hard. - Wonderful environment for animal lovers.

Strenuous manual labour specially on truck receiving days, no benefits, minimum wages

One of the worst places you could work at: minimum wage, strenuous manual labour specially on truck receiving days (truck shifts should pay three times as much as none truck receiving shifts but they don't! Truck receiving shifts are back breaking), no benefits, unorganized with scheduling. Franchise owners just care about enriching themselves on the backs of Canadians. I have experienced several instances where I was not paid for all the hours I worked. Only after realizing the discrepancies and protesting I was able to get my full pay in the next pay period with a two week delay. Those situations happened regularly, I had to keep a very close eye on my hours and my pay to make sure they paid me for all the hours that I worked. The franchise owners demand that employees solicit donations from customers when in effect they make profits in the name of donating to shelters instead of selling those product donations at cost. Most employees quit after a very short stay. I already quit and went to one of PetValu's competitors who appreciates me, treats me like a human being, gives me health benefits, pays me significantly more and provides me with a healthy work environment.

Good part time work, especially if you love animals and sales

Great place to work along side animals and expand your knowledge of animal nutrition and care. Downside: all employees under manager are hired part time and receive no benefits (even though you often work 35 or more hours). This however is dependent on the manager. Fairly easy job, there is sometimes room to grow but due to the fact that at any given time a Corporate store can sell to Franchise there is the possibility of job loss. The schedules vary making it hard to balance things. (dependent on manager) Overall: a great place to get your foot in the door for sales, animal knowledge, care, rescues, etc but not an ideal place to stay and grow

Points positifs

Work with animals and animal owners are usually very easy and pleasent customers

Points négatifs

no benifits, varried schedules, no job stability unless you are manager

Great job if u like pets

It is a fun job if u are interested in pets and thier nutrition. Always nice to help a pet owner find a solution. Franchises are bad, bad communication, lack of organization and no job security. The first franchise owner told me I had no rights, and the second wanted to book me while I was supposed to be in school, no flexible scheduling is a issue, over all loved the job, couldn't work with my manager, so disorganized and disrespectful

Points positifs

Animals, learn alot

Points négatifs

Really bad management

Fun Place

For a part time retail job it can be a great environment, but most of the stores are franchises and the culture, pay and benefits can fluctuate. It pays like a part-time job but you are required to obtain a great deal of knowledge, and that just is not recognized and reflected by management. But, the customers are usually awesome and bring their pets in, so that's always a plus.

Time will go by excruciatingly slow.

Learned about pet food ingredients, no doubt. But, there are hardly any customers throughout the day, and most of the customers who do come in will typically know exactly what they are going to buy before they even came in, so they often don't need your assistance... so you find yourself pacing a lot throughout the tiny store for the most part. Worked a full day here, and by the end of the day I knew it wasn't for me. And on top of all this, they didn't even pay me for my shift, despite agreeing to pay me and telling me my wage. Not worth it.

Points négatifs

Not many customers, not much to do, lots of standing

Precarious

Pet Valu corporate is in process of selling and franchising stores so there are few opportunities to move forward- job is more likely to be for small business than corporation.
