The job wasn't all that enjoyable except for the interaction with customers and their pets as well as your coworkers. You receive plenty of worthwhile knowledge particularly on the best nutritional food to feed your pet. Management left a lot to be Desired!!
Fun workplace where you get to help people learn about their pet's specific needs. I learned a lot about pet nutrition as there's a large course you have to complete within your first few months there. Management is inconsistent Expected to be as skilled as a car salesperson, at minimum wage pay There are dogs there almost everyday, and they don't judge you.
I have been working at a Pet Valu corporate store for almost 2 years now. Its important to note that this job has a lot of training in pet nutrition, which takes about three months to complete all the modules, so you do need to be interested in learning to enjoy this job. I think its a great company to work for, although upper management is always hit or miss. Usually one store will have upwards of 5 emloyees, so expect to be friends with your colleagues! Great staff discounts, and the company will help you move up if you want the challenge.

I had this position for 8 years. I had year wage increases, but, even though I worked 40 hours a week, I was a part-timer and received no benefits. Once the minimum wage went up, all of my advancements were null and void. I made the same as the new untrained people walking in. I became a single parent with little support, and was reprimanded for not being able to work all the days they wanted me to, because I didn't have daycare on those days. I left because of it.
I met many great people.
The higher management does not listen to employee suggestions and puts too much pressure on store managers. My experience was great except for the fact that my district manager was not very nice, did not give me any praise for my hard work and was always telling me what was best for the store when realistically he was not the one in the store dealing with day to day customers and experiences. He really made me feel incompetent when I was working my butt off for the company for many years.Higher management needs to be supervising and training their district managers to be sure they are treating their staff well.I dreaded speaking to my boss, it was always negative comment after negative comment, sarcasm and no praise.I had dealt with a few district managers during my employment and 2 of the 3 were not pleasant.I feel Pet Valu has come a long way after being bought out by a US company. They are doing a good job with revamping stores, opening new stores and focusing on sales. They should not get so money hungry that they forget about the friendly customer service aspect. Its all about the customer, greeting them, informing them, asking about their pets..etc.It should NOT all be about selling them higher priced merchandise and more and more items.
good pay. nice atmosphere, great product training.
long hours, short staffed, unpleasent managers.
