Nice starter job, not recommended if you’re looking to advance your career

L'avis le plus utile, sélectionné par Indeed
Pet Valu was my very first job. I started at just 15, and I worked there for almost 3 years. For a starter job, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. My coworkers were very friendly, the customers typically were unproblematic, and working with animals is always a huge plus. The job itself I loved, but the management and salary could be improved upon. In my near 3 years, I started as a basic retail associate. By the end of my term, I was appointed many duties I believe were above my pay grade. I did not receive a raise throughout my near 3 years. The management seemed unorganized to me, and the complaints and suggestions of the employees were never taken into account. For the last 8 months of my job, we did not have a manager, and there were no urgent efforts to hire one. The staff numbers were less than I thought they should have been. I loved the first while of my job, but it quickly went south due to increasing management problems, and eventually I did decide to quit. However, the job itself was great, and if you’re looking for a short term, enjoyable job, I recommend it.

Points positifs

short & flexible hours, relaxed environment, friendly team and customers, easy work, interacting with animals

Points négatifs

management, no opportunity for growth, low salary, understaffed

Employees are disposable

After working at a PetValu location for less than a year, I watched multiple turnovers occur in staff. Management can be very cold and unforgiving. Employees are offered a discount which is probably one of the only benefits outside of getting to see dogs all day.

Points positifs

Employee discounts

Points négatifs

Management

Fun job with great coworkers.

Have been with PetValu for over 6 years. Have many amazing coworkers who have been here 5+ years as well. Fast paced days, makes the time pass quickly.

Franchise

Worked at a location owned by a franchise owner. No real manager or management for that matter. Work conditions are not up to par. No break room or lunch area for staff. Co workers and customers make the job worth it. Pay is simply minimum wage and raises are essentially non existent, regardless of your previous experience.

Points positifs

Animals

Points négatifs

Lack of management
Avez-vous trouvé cet avis utile?

Informational but too much

I worked for a corporate store so this review is based on that. The expectations are way too high for the pay-wages are not competitive at all. Although I did meet a lot of great people and learned a lot it really wasn’t that great of a job.

Points positifs

Discounts

Points négatifs

Work overload for low pay

Staff is so fake

I worked at pet valu for about 2 weeks until they let me go because the other workers had “nothing but negative things to say” about me is what the manger told me. When I was nothing but nice and sweet to all of them i was also told I wasn’t a team player when I did everything I was asked and more! Especially for someone new and doesn’t know much. I personally think it was an excuse because someone was jealous. So employees are terrible they are nice to your face but then turn around and talk bad about you that’s all I heard about all the time. NOTT I good environment to work in. And they don’t give you breaks, terribly ran Business.

Great Part-Time Job

Good work environment. Everyone got along and supported each other. Busy enough that the day goes by but not overwhelmingly busy. Scheduling was very flexible and management was very supportive.

Points positifs

Good work environment

genuinely SO terrible .. stay away!!

Worst management i've ever had, worst group of higher ups i've ever seen. They don't care about you. They don't follow labour laws. They surely don't care about your safety or how you are treated. Definitely not worth minimum wage . Don't work here. You'll thank me later

Points positifs

Cute Animals come to visit

Points négatifs

horrible management, unfair pay, poor treatment
Avez-vous trouvé cet avis utile?

Over all its random if you will like

Managers are expected to do a lot and part-time staff are expected as you way more than any other stock position but for the same pay the store environments themselves can be quite entertaining and a lot of fun but there's a lot of top-down pressure for not a lot of compensation

Points positifs

Discounts, pets come in

Points négatifs

Low pay, no work-life balance

Don't work here unless you want to be an empty void of yourself

Terrible job. Management expects your entire life to be 100% petvalu. If you do grow in the company, you end up doing more work than you're paid for. Awful turnover rates. Managers are so rude and act better than everyone, even though they barely graduated high school. Tons of gossip, belittling, and brown nosing. You're going to be miserable and mistreated greatly. Run, run fast and run far.

Points positifs

discount, dogs, virtual learning

Points négatifs

scattered hours, rude, false info given

Fantastic, but…

It’s an amazing place to work, but don’t expect much by ways of raises. Hours can be stingy most weeks, but if it’s your first job it’s a great place to socialize and get comfortable with retail life

Points positifs

Flexible hours

Points négatifs

Short/long shifts, few raises

Great place to work, but it will depend on Franchise Owner

The Franchise Owners I worked for in Peterborugh, ON were the best any employee could ask for. They were always very understanding of life and school needs and paid well with nice bonuses.

Good learning program, not great upselling practices

I liked working in pet valu for the clean and organized stores. It was fun solving pet parent’s issues and learning about pet care. Letting the adoptable cats play as I closed was the best part of my day. I definitely don’t like how dog and cat focused the store is. Little to no experience with small pets other than betta fish. The upselling to ignorant customers felt demoralizing. Sold some terrible items that aren’t good for pets. Lastly, management used extra money staff earned for sales quotas for cleaning supplies.

Points positifs

Lot of cute pets, 20% discount, adoption program.

Points négatifs

Lots. Upselling mostly.

Awful place to work !

I thought this would be a fun place to work , the local pet shop , full of dogs , puppy's and happy people , How nice would that be well that part was right but what I did not expect was the extremely poor management ! Terrible work culture with bullying and favoritism ,They lose staff on a constant basis and after a few months it became apparent why . do yourself a favor and look elsewhere .....

Points positifs

Dogs and Pups

Points négatifs

Terrible manager

Poor management

I worked in several positions both in store and in Home office. There was literally not a competent manager in the whole place. Just people trying to CYA by blaming everyone else. Such a sad experience .

Points positifs

None

Points négatifs

Constant exploitation

Not worth your time

was so excited to start working at Bosley's but the work-life balance is way off. management only cares about getting enough hours for the store, you will work like a dog literally even if you ask for fewer hours. Most of the coworkers were nice but anyone higher up was super mean and lots of gossip occurred in the workplace.

Points positifs

dog

Points négatifs

long hours

laid back workplace, but needs pay increases and better management

The best part of the job is being able to make friends with some co-workers and dealing with customers and their pets. The discounts are good. Employees are rarely punished for coming in late all the time or calling in sick forcing other employees to take their shifts when its their day off. In the several years I've been with the company, i've received raises totalling about $1.50 per hour. The company is growing quickly and has large profits, but gives like 20 cent raises to employees. Can be a caty environment. Store management can be laid back, but district managers are not and can be very rude and disrespectful.

Points positifs

Store discounts, customers, pets

Points négatifs

lack of hours, district management, pay, gossip

Easy going depending on management

Pet valu in Canada is a chain so you will have different experiences for every store. Personally my store is very chill, we have a very understanding manager that is easy to work with and I wouldn’t trade her for anything. But the store owner and operator are different, anytime they are around it’s very stressful and tightly wound. This job can go both ways it can be great if you like talking to customers, stocking, but there is never down time even if there is nothing to do they will find something. You will get great training it was 2 weeks, but Expect to be on your feet all day. There are no paid breaks but personally at my store you can get write offs which are returned or broken merchandise you can take home for free.

Points positifs

Training, discount

Points négatifs

Unpaid breaks, stressful store owners

This is the worst company to work for. PLEASE, do not even bother applying.

I can't even begin to describe how much I hated working here. Management is terrible and corrputed. They don't care for their employees at all. The manager where I worked was a dictator and EVERYTHING had to be here way or the highway. I feel bad for my co-workers, they feel stuck there because they both rely on the income but lucky for me I'm a student and was able to escape. You'll be leaving here within your first 6 months if you even bother to work here. ]Legit a nightmare.

One of the best jobs I’ve ever had!

You get to meet all like-minded coworkers and pet owners (bonus of seeing dogs or cats every day!).You work closely with a cat rescue to find adoptable homes for them in store, work with dog rescues events once a month and overall it’s a straight forward job for those with a head on their shoulders! It’s not rocket science but it is a fast spaced environment. Usually your shift you might work alone or with another coworker, possibly 3 all together! (Full team on truck/delivery days) this job kept me on my toes for 5 years. There’s a lot of responsibility with the high demand and cleaning (especially the stores with a dog wash). It can be overwhelming if you’re alone or with a coworker to keep up with the demand of the store while trying to clean, keep tabs with stock, help customers and prep for Flyer day OR putting the delivery away OR simply closing the store at the end of day. There’s rarely time to be lazy or else you’re creating a headache for yourself and the team.

Points positifs

Fun atmosphere and coworkers

Points négatifs

Long task list / high store demand / short staff and the minimum wage pay

must dedicate a handful of hours to the job (more than part-time)

Overall, great place to work if you have a lot of free time. I personally didn't like the work environment as favouritism was a factor between other employees. You also receive shifts almost everyday and they are extremely long (sometimes you don't even get a break)... management is very reliable on you (even if you're part-time) and will expect you to dedicate all your time to the store. Don't recommend for any full-time students that want to continue to achieve high academics.

Points positifs

Friendly customers, not much work to do

Points négatifs

long hours, not enough employees, favouritism, no guaranteed lunch break, low security
