The training offered was good, I learned a lot, but I would have liked to have extra workshops after completing the initial training. I liked that most customers were happy because they were shopping for their pets. Get to see animals every day which is a plus. Get to work with Rescue groups. Great to work there when you have an interest for anything related to pets. It was easy for me to answer customers' inquiries because I was genuily interested in learning about the field and helping people with their pets. Hours were ok, pay was minimum wage with no bonuses, commissions, nothing... which sucked. Some benefits when you are full-time I believe. The store I worked at was a corporate store and that was hell. Head Office would come in all pretentious and telling us what to do when they had no idea what it took to run a store as big as we had, because none of them worked as a sales associate. They would tell us to do something one day, and we'd have to do the opposite the next. Not willing to listen to any suggestions from staff either. That was the reason I quite because I felt worthless and management (from HO) was extremely rude. No room for growth. Pet Valu doesn't promote from within. As a retail job, it is great if you love anything related to pets, but I would definitely recommend a franchise over a corporate store.

The DMs and most SMs are great, very invested in helping the customers care for their "furbabies" and the personal success of the store teams.PVI was a great company to work for until the parent company unilaterally threw us all out on the street without notice or explanation.

Extremely poor management. (Worst I’ve ever seen)Most employees slack off and don’t get spoken to about it. They also have a high turnover rate. They will promise you full time hours but will always cut your hours.(no benefits for full time employees unless you’re management) No proper training provided. Underpaid for the amount of work and stress you're expected to put on. Very unorganized. Very unprofessional.

As the team lead for the inventory control team I have worked with an incredibly supportive manager and a good staff. Expectations are clearly defined and daily tasks are supported by management. I learned about Microsoft NAV II. The workplace culture is very team oriented. Problem solving is the most enjoyable part of the job

Even with the shut down Petvalu U.S was a amazing company. amazing customer service, products, prices, washes, and animals ! very good training programs for employees along with the opportunity to further educate.

Overall I enjoyed working here. It's retail so don't expect a long, fulfilling career however. The work environment was nice; great looking stores; nice customer base. Management was thrown into positions without much training and it shows.

When working for this company I never knew what it was like to be home. The manager would show up whenever he felt like it. I was called dumb and insulted at will by the manager on the floor in front of people.

I loved my manager and coworkers but after years of being told I go above and beyond, I only received a $.25 raise from minimum wage ($7.25) to 7.50.. I didn’t believe it was worth it in the end when I had bills to pay. Also if you are shy this is probably not a good fit for you. Our location had a rule that you have to talk to every single person that walks through the door and to keep talking to them even though they say they do not want help, which is hard for someone with anxiety.

Nice people, co workers are great and management was great to be around too. Employee discount was very fair and customers weren’t bad either. Most start to know you by name and will always greet you when they come in.

The environment is different than other pet stores, you will do everything here. It’s expected of even entry level employees. The pay is very low for the responsibilities given. Key holders have supervisor responsibilities with nothing more than maybe $9/hour. Managers do not have enough support from higher ups. You are constantly told how you can do better, it’s rare to get a call out for what you’ve done well. District managers get to sit at home all day and harass managers with calls and emails over the littlest things. Managers spend all day on the phone with each other, they also show up whenever they please without a heads up. Sometimes an hour late or sometimes leaving early. The managers are extremely cliquey and talk poorly of each other all the time. This job is extremely draining. The customers are some of the rudest people I have ever met, and they know they can get anything they want by calling and making nonsensical complaints. You literally will have to do anything to appease a customer, even if they are cursing at you and saying some of the rudest things I’ve ever heard. Items are consistently out at the warehouse resulting in more tension with customers. They overwhelm stores with new product and do not provide enough support for organizing store. Every store looks completely different. Cleaning and safety supplies for COVID are always out of stock too. You will also be punished for wanting time off no matter the notice you give for the time off. The hours aren’t great and you are expected to work alone majority of your shift due to staffing issues. This is a job. If your looking for a job to get up to everyday and go to this is it. But if you looking for a place that supports you, appreciates you, pays you fairly for the work required, and has room for advancement... this is not the job for you. I worked there for over a year never saw a single raise even though I was a key holder. Ina general day at work you would open or close each shift sometimes would would have to do so alone. Then you would have to face and brand the store, do overstock, clean, help customers, do the till usually alone until noon when the next person got there. We worked 8.5 our shifts with unpaid breaks and management frankly didn’t care. There was a general consensus of feeling unappreciated regardless of how much/ how hard you worked. It was a good job for a while but like all retail it is a revolving door of staff with little reliance

I personally had a great time when I was working here, they do have a lot of structure to follow and you will have sales goals but the management was positive and outgoingThe main cons with working here is that they limit the amount of hours per store and kinda make employees compete for them, at least when I worked for them they did, so it might be hard to work one job with them.And they dont really hire from within too often, although I'm sure being picky about management might not be a bad thing in all cases hahaYou do learn a lot working with a petvalu and its many other stores though! They have really good training and I do remember my job fairly positively.

They can't provide enough hours to give it's employees. It definitely wasn't worth the 40 minute drive from MA for RI minimum wage at about $10 an hour

Some good people at associate and manager levels, but not enough. Some managers and district managers are very cliquey. Be a part of those cliques, or receive lesser treatment.

This job stressed me out a lot because there would be times during busy holiday sales that I would be left alone to my own devices. Lines would be wrapped around the whole store, and I didn’t have a moment to call for help because it was so busy. It wasn’t the management’s fault, but the fault of the corporation for not allowing more staffing and higher wages. The amount of work that you did was NOT worth the small compensation. The only plus side was getting to know the people I worked with, and getting to pet animals all the time.

I worked as a manager for 5 years , never missed sales goals, always high 90's on stour visits, always received bonus, took it upon myself to help multiple local charitys. All to be blind sided the day before another raise was due and was let go "without cause" , made to leave like a criminal, wasn't allowed to retrieve my personal belongings, still do this day no explanation. Proving what I was always told about the company "don't over work yourself for them , to them you are only a replaceable body "

Decent place to work, decent starting pay for college students who don’t have big bills like rent. And i did get to advance and grow. However! You’ll grow out of it. Doesn’t pay enough to build a life. Work alone a lot. You’ll be made to cover other stores even if you don’t really want to. Long hours without breaks sometimes.

Management (particularly upper management) plays favorites, takes advantage of you, overworks you, and gives you nothing in return since there is virtually no opportunity to move up. Communication is terrible. They dealt with the pandemic terribly and things have been falling apart since then. Everything is out of stock but you're still expected meet sales goals with a half empty store. Corporate has absolutely no idea what actually goes on in the stores, what customers are like, how to sell things, how to maintain a store. They come up with cutesy acronyms and make employees learn them as if they're somehow helpful. If you work here, just enjoy it and don't try too hard. I love my coworkers and the animals but that's about it.
