Schedules change randomly and youre expected to accommodate. The hours are insane. If you don't fit in, good luck because you will be pushed out of this company. If you do not devote all of your time to this company you will be reprimanded and called out for being a poor worker even though you have completed 130-150hrs in two week and yes this can be typical amount of hours you will be expected work once you get hired. Do not ask for time off. Do not get sick because you will feel a wrath of management. The turn over rate is extremely high, i say the turnover rate is unprecedented for group home care. This company is open about being a stepping stone as they have no interest in keeping staff long-term as they are just worried about filling positons immediately. I feel terrible for supervisors or full time staff that have put years in the company as they are always expected to pick up the pieces without any thank yous or recognition. The work culture has left most with severe mental health. How this place is still up and running as confused the minds of many past employees. youre self-esteem will be shot down and you will probably question your worth and you will feel as though you are not a strong youth worker, trust your gut you came into the field for a reason and you will find somewhere where you are appreciated and taken care of but unfortunately this is not the company. There are workers who look sick and extremely exhausted but push themselves to show up everyday with a positive attitude and they need to be applauded. Children are great and they make most of the staff - plus...

I would not recommend this company to anybody. They do not care about their employees, nobody matters here. They do not prepare you for the types of children you will be working with, they do not support you adequately as management. They don't tell you if you're doing anything wrong until you're being written up for it. I've spoken with several other people who have all said that they would not recommend this company to anybody. It was the worst few months of my life, and I am thankful that I found another job so quickly. There was no medical care provided after deep bite marks, which any other agency would have sent you to the hospital for. Be prepared to work with some staff as well as clients that really push your buttons. Management acts easy going, but they don't even do their job properly. There were also multiple instances where I dealt with extremely violent individuals with very little support. There is also access to a lot of items that can easily be used as weapons. Not a safe place to work if you want to be supported, and they do not pay for things to be replaced when the children break them. The youth are not help accountable for their actions, and they will damage your clothes, personal property, and some will try to damage your vehicle in my experience. Horrible place to work.
Points positifs
You are salary, so the pay is always the same.
Points négatifs
no support; no medical care provided after injury; lack of communication; easy access to weapons;

Worked here for some time until it became apparent administration does not care about their employees. It was a lesson for me to do more research about companies beforehand. I highly recommend against accepting a job here.

Expect your schedule to change from month to month. Expect not to be paid correctly. Expect to be sabotaged by coworkers and be placed in numerous dangerous situations, that could have been averted. Expect coworkers to sit around and not work with residents. Expect blame shifting, where you are being blamed for things that are the direct result of under-staffing. Expect to not be trained on the operations of the residence. Expect coworkers to purposefully turn highly aggressive clients, against you. Expect that no one will take accountability for their actions. Expect each team meeting to be lip service only, nothing will be implemented. Expect favoritism, where certain coworkers get away with not doing their work. Expect gossip filled with lies. Expect to be disgusted.
Points positifs

Points négatifs
Long hours, no breaks, not getting paid correctly, poor management

Agency cares too much about themselves & not enough about the children and youth. Constant back and forth from management. Staff are all friends & forget about the kids - like other reviews 'cliquey'. Long hours and awful pay for the hard work that is done on a daily basis.Stayed around for the sake of helping kids but didn't last long, like many staff in this agency. Very high turnaround Good learning experience for new people in the field but not worth it. Takes a toll on your own mental health.

Experienced workers also have strong educational backgrounds. The pay is far below where it should be and unless you are someone that has NO experience, this would not be a worthwhile opportunity. Working here is a resume builder because the pay is certainly not reflective of how challenging the job can be.

You need to know your legal rights and be confident in enforcing them Shift work and crisis means it’s not uncommon to have less then 8hrs between shifts Late nights followed by early mornings, as shiftwork is daily based not weekly rotations Part of good self care is knowing when to say no to extra shifts, taking time off. Many continue wit work and burnout shows, both as a team memeber and with clients High turnover so sometimes you’ll be supported by a strong team(coworkers and management) and other times not. It can be clique like, be careful what you share with whom (any workplace is like this really) You can get a plethora of experience if you choose to work out of various locations for shift coverage It is a high stress job, good self care is vital Good job for those can be self motivated Confrontational work required often

There is a lack of communication and transparency within the relationship between the management and front line staff. Community contacts are of great asset in order to service the clients appropriately.

Working in a group home facility is usually a stepping stone for many people entering in the human services field. OFGH provides you the opportunity to enhance on your skills in crisis management, network with outside agencies, problem solve, and build positive rapports with youth. OFGH has five different programs where you are exposed to various populations. If you are a new person who is egar to learn how to work with various populations then OFGH is definitely going to provide you that opportunity. There is room for advancement, and you have the opportunity to gain leadership skills through working as a rotational shift leader. Yes, there are long hours depending on the program you work at it can be between 8 to 12 hours. There is shift work. There is always room for improvement, which OFGH has been thriving to make positive changes in the company.

I have been an employee of this company for seven years. I feel very fortunate to have found a company that does value their employees and works hard to ensure that self care is a priority. As all agencies and other work environments, there is a level of expectation to find your own shift coverage, however, with that being said, if someone is very sick they are not encouraged to come to work. I also really enjoy the level of expectation placed on the staff to monitor the youth closely to ensure the youth's and staff's safety. Safety is of the utmost importance as is team work. Staff are encouraged to provide insight to issues that they observed and any potential solutions they feel might work. Overall, with any work place there can be challenges, however, I would not continue to work at this company if it was not a positive and supportive environment.

Supportive workplace

If you like being treated like you don't matter than OFGH is for you. If you enjoy long shifts with no breaks, and no staff support that again this is the perfect job. They do not care about their workers, as everyone is replaceable. The schedule changes at least once a month, with no notice so you better have 24 hour availability. Youth can be challenging at times, and staff lack the skills to manage a crisis. Staff enjoy sitting/hiding in the office for most of their shift, therefore no support or help on the floor. Staff don't engage the youth and prefer to do nothing all shift. If you have to stay late to finish paperwork or stuck providing support during a crisis, they won't pay you for it. Little to no chance for advancement, and a high turnover rate of staff. Despite challenging behaviours the youth are the best part. Also be prepared for a million texts to cover shifts at the various houses in Durham Region. Also they post job ads under different company names, as Ontario Family Group Homes, OFGH, OFGH Inc...

Honestly the worst job I've worked. Staff would rather escalate residents to the point of calling the police than working alongside the residents and their needs. The residents deserve a better place to live where the staff care about them and eachother. I've had staff tell me they purposely make residents go into a higher state of crisis because they don't want to deal with them. Scheduling is always changing and they change probation periods on you without warning. They always leave groceries until the very last minute and last minute means when there's almost no food left with a house full of residents.

Definitely one of the most challenging residential programs I've ever worked with in my ten years. OFGH takes clients who cannot really be placed elsewhere in the system. OFGH is def the best for the more complex cases. I say challenging because you need to use all your skills, constantly be thinking, always alert, always engaging, etc. There are easier places to land a job but if you are looking to utilize your education and skills to the max, this is the place. Standards are high as they should be....we are working with kids who are the most vulnerable and complex, often with dual diagnosis. I've seen employees be hired but not make it past 3-months and this is because they can't meet the standards and maybe should be at an easier place that requires a lot less from employees. This place really stretches me and pushes me to be the best youth worker possible. I couldn't get this type of complex experience anywhere else. The pay is "ok" but little can be done as it is set up with funding that way. I stay for the experience, the team and my manager. This is not a place for people wanting to just coast in a job. These kids need amazing support workers who are at the top of their game.

I worked long hours ( 12 hour shifts with no breaks) management is not aware of all the staff that just sits around while you do all the work. I asked for more training on medication cause I really only had 2 shifts giving medication and some one senior to me made a mistake and I got blamed for it . They said I never connected with the children which was a lie. I miss the children there and to me it's a unsafe environment to have a group home anyway for certain children that are high risk. All the new workers were a better team then people that were there for years. Unsupported is the way I felt and loved the kids but management is to unorganized for me. Thanks again for letting me go find a much better place to work that works well as a team. Also when someone asks a question we might get answers and proper training. This place is not a great place to learn anything cause management is to busy talking about the workers.

Working at Ontario Family Group Homes can be exhausting. The youth can be very difficult to manage and often times it can be dangerous. Management at some of the houses are extremely poor and the wages are a joke. For the level of threat being posed to staff on a daily basis, a decent wage would go a long way.
Points positifs
