Great company to work for
Administrator (Ancien employé) –  Edmonton, AB9 octobre 2019
Great company to work for if you have a good manager, but if the manager isn’t compatible you can have a tough time. Not a lot of advancement if you are not at the head office.

You get paid
Flight Service Specialist (Employé actuel) –  Edmonton, AB22 juillet 2019
This is a highly tiered company. You'll see a lot of nice reviews for happy people working in the office/non ops environment. They work in their own little bubble and with the right manager, I'm sure it can be a good job

However, if you're in operations, things can be ugly.

Tiers:

IFR controllers (there is tiers within this group also)
Major tower controllers
Medium tower controllers
"shouldn't even be a tower" controllers
Flight Service Specialists
Technical operations
Everything else*

If you're not at the top of the scale, expect little and you won't be disappointed.

Money ranges from a joke to very good

Working conditions vary wildly. Some airport facilities are incredibly old, with dated equipment and minimal staff amenities - if you're lucky you will have your own staff bathroom and possibly some kind of break area. In the higher tiers you get custom nap rooms (that is only for your little group, no peasants allowed) full gyms, cafeterias etc

Lower tiers the best case scenario is that nobody remembers you exist. *Some of the everything else jobs actually seem to have some happyish staff as they are just doing their own thing and most people barely acknowledge their existence. Unfortunately if you are in a site that actually needs something, from facilities to operation needs, don't expect it. Or even worse, some idiot from Ottawa will come "help" you

The company is divided into regions. Some are far far better than others, especially depending on which group you work for. Management performance also varies wildly. Most of the front line management
plus... has little power and many have little idea what they are doing though the truly toxic situations are mostly ended. Middle management and senior management are badly out of touch and hyper focused on dubious technology solutions to address staff shortages and on IFR billing

Training is abysmal. It's very long and the success rate is terrible. Depending on your group expect to spend at least two years smiling, nodding, and trying to fit in, in the hopes of getting the job at the end. It's not uncommon to get failed out in the last week of those two years

The scheduling is pretty terrible and in certain groups it's not uncommon to work 25+ days in a row with multiple short changes/long changes. Only the controllers and techs get actual breaks. Other people could work a 12+ hour shift solo, with quick runs to the bathroom.

The company is in love with technology and the future for many operational groups looks questionable. Staffing is an ongoing crisis that is excaserbated by the 5-10 year attempts to consolidate staff and close sites/mass layoffs that never really works out.

The unions are of limited use but are perhaps better than nothing. Don't expect much.

Opportunities for advancement are promised but rarely materialize. If you do want to switch unions it involves a lot of begging and knowing the right people. If you go management, there's a two tiered pay system depending on which group you were hired from, even if you are doing the exact same job.

This company in general succeeds in spite of itself. Thankfully most of the units run themselves, if the managers let them

Should you work here? Depends on what your options are in life. I wouldn't recommend operations and the technical staff mostly seem miserable, but it does only need a high school diploma (which is very apparent) and the pay is better than fast food. And if you get the brass ring of IFR ATC you will make a ton of money and be able to complain endlessly that you aren't given the respect your "super critical" job deserves (which is laughable).

Vacation leave is good

Benefits are very middle tier and most areas haven't increased in the 20+ year life of the company.

Pension future is a bit unknown, the union offered some major concessions and it seemed in a lot of trouble at one point. New hires get a strange defined benefit version, different from most of the company

Many of the work locations for FSS aren't desirable and it can be difficult to move around.

DATE COLLECTION MANAGER (Ancien employé) –  Ottawa South, ON16 avril 2019
Over all I like the company. It is one of the best as long as you get into a well managed department. If you do you're set for a great ride. If not your whole outlook on work will become frustrating,

total disaster in terms of organization and staff morale.
Dishwasher/Janitor/Prep Cook/Cashier (Ancien employé) –  Cornwall, ON19 octobre 2018
Entire side of management was fired and replaced before I had left. Positive changes were made but I did not stay long enough to see it all play out. When i was there, staff was over-worked and treated like garbage. Hard work went unnoticed while small mistakes would be exaggerated and the employee would be alienated for them.

Lack of growth and engagement
Manager, Pension Plan Accounting, Fund Operations (Employé actuel) –  Ottawa, ON8 décembre 2017
Not for profit business without any real growth opportunities. People join and stay for the pension. Low engagement.
They do have good procedures in place compared to other not-for-profits in Ottawa and pay well.

Beautiful building with lots of amenities, family atmosphere
Publications Assistant NAV Centre (laid off) (Ancien employé) –  Cornwall, ON23 octobre 2017
After 27 years working at NAV CENTRE I was laid off due to technology advances. I typically inputted, formatted and proofread documents such as student and instructor manuals as well as exams, reports and diagrams. The workplace culture was fantastic, we all knew each other for most of our career. The hardest part of the job was being laid off. The most enjoyable part of the job was the social aspect.
Points positifs
gained life long friendships, benefits and salary
Points négatifs
laid off

Office Administrative Assistant (Ancien employé) –  Montréal, QC16 octobre 2017
The workplace has a calm environment. Administrative duties (Mailroom) were a daily function. Learned great people skills and met numerous fun people. Hardest part was uncertainty of job security.
I learned lots about file maintenance and how to work productively alone.

Difficult Training
Air Traffic Control Trainee (Ancien employé) –  Winnipeg, MB13 octobre 2017
Training is the worst part of the job, very inconsistent and you can be cut from training at any time with little to no warning. The actual job is exciting and very interesting.
