We obtain survey data from localized, comparable employers in Geomatics and use it as a guide to establish rates of pay for our staff. As you know, the Oil & Gas market, which we predominantly service with our survey products, has been unpredictable over recent years leaving us no choice but to manage the business conservatively to protect our market share.
You’re right, scheduling is pretty demanding for our field staff. We do the best we can to accommodate requests for time off from our staff, we also have an obligation to service our clients. The reality is that this leads to a degree of uncertainty at times and is truly the down-side of employment with a company providing service-based products. While we hold high regard for providing exceptional service, we do our best to offer the flexibility we can to our staff.

Change initiatives are difficult to implement, it’s a process not an event, and something we strive to improve upon each time. Like many industries, the municipal surveying field experiences peaks and valleys in business volumes. Cost-conscious decision-making can appear trivial, or "cheap" as you describe; we feel every penny counts towards the company sustaining itself for years to come and, yes, we require employee support in this regard. Allocating resources to terrestrial laser scanning and drone technologies to support our survey products has definitely resulted from our ability to manage cash balances.
We strive to achieve our Mission, Vision and Values. Each of which include our employees; engaging, supporting, and showing commitment to them every step of the way. Your comment that the Office Manager "doesn't care about his employees" is concerning and we will reflect upon practices which aren't working towards our goals.

I am sorry to hear you felt scheduling interfered with your personal life. Midwest Surveys includes people as one of its core values and we make every effort to ensure employees have fair work/life balance. Client needs sometimes don't allow us to work around personal plans and scheduling can be a real challenge in these circumstances. We do appreciate the individual sacrifices employees make to ensure deadlines are met.
