Great place to work

Such a fun place to work, everyone was always so nice and willing to help. Customers vary, but are generally nice. Management helps out and is very flexable with scheduling and time off. The training is a bit lacking, but the tasks are simple.

Great if you want part-time

Shifts are no longer than 4 hours at a time and it’s very rare you work more than 3-4 shifts a week. If you work on replenishment expect to get pushed hard to get everything done, especially if your short staffed. If management realizes you’re a hard worker they will rely heavily on you to get things done while allowing others to slack off. Truck days are hard, you need to unload the truck and put all the stock out in a limited amount of time, usually the store is closed for this but often times now your shift will run into opening hours and you have to balance greeting customers with putting stock away. Basically, if you’re a hard worker and are willing to put more into your job than what you get from it you shouldn’t have any issues. The best part of working at this location are your co-workers. I’ve met some of the nicest people I’ve ever known, more than willing to help you out if you need it.

Nice place to work

Store Managers were very knowledgable and likeable, staff all worked hard and cared about helping customers as best they could. Even during busy times, management made sure to recognize the hard work with surprises and gifts.

Dont even bother applying

I had always wanted to work at michaels, I like making things and am into crafty stuff like that and so I was so excited when I got the job but oh boy what a disappointment. Worked here for a month, by my first day I knew I was going to quit. I was hired as early morning replenishment, my first day I had about 3 minutes of training (basically just telling you that we're doing truck and that's it), but seriously they straight up didn't train me. I came in to put in my direct deposit info a few days before my last shift and was floored to see I had over 25 online training courses that they didn't even tell me about let alone give me time to do it (youre only able to do it on a secure Micheals connected computer so you're unable to do them off shift). The hours weren't great either, had multiple 3 hour shifts at 3AM (like that's worth it), the longest shift I got working here was my final shift, a normal 8 hours. The schedule was done a month in advance, yet they would text you every two days asking you to work more on short notice. They are also completely unorganized and very clique-ey. I apparently wasn't in the system for 2 weeks so I couldn't log into any computers or log into the scanner gun's. Also the last thing my manager said to me before I left was "good luck on your future endeavors and s@#t". I realize it's obviously meant to be a lighthearted joke but c'mon seriously? That's your final goodbye to an employee?

It could be better

Upper management only cares about making their numbers and provide very little to no support to staff. Training is abysmal. Compensation is low for job demands. There’s a high turnover rate. Perhaps if management were to treat employers better than there would be a higher retention rate. Overall extremely disorganized and unprofessional.

Michael's is a neat place to work. Thy have really cool items in the store

It was great place to learn. Amber a fellow employee helped me a lot. It was easy going and relaxing. They offered me a lot of shifts. The managers are great and easy going.

okay first job

Managers expect too much of you to do, constantly get workers to annoy customers who do not want to be helped. Depending if CUSTOMERS give you their numbers or not it determines if you'll get hours or not.

Absolutely Amazing!!!

I’m a replenishment team member, and I enjoy it. A typical day includes being zoned in an area of the store and filling the shelves up. On truck days, we unload the truck and organize them on trolleys so we can bring them to sections of the store. The employees are all very kind and very easy to work with! The store manager of my store did my first interview, and my supervisor of my section did my second interview. They were both easy interviews!

Awesome.. except..

Was absolutely great until the head owner started cutting our hours because we didn’t have our rewards above a certain amount. To me that’s super unprofessional and silly. People are just going to end up finding another job. We need hours!! Especially when our team is amazing and we work together so well. But I guess it’s all based on if customers want to sign up with their reward system that gives the customers no benefits at all... it’s unfortunate because I really enjoy working here and would have given it a 5/5 star rating. Especially when the other managers are really great.

Terrible Management

Imagine a manager that never leaves their office and blames you for not being properly trained. That's exactly what you'll get from the new manager, get hardly any hours about 8 a week, and no way to climb the corporate ladder. Some of the managers are fine to work with but overall it's a toxic environment. Terrible working conditions it gets hot during the summer the AC hasn't worked properly in about 2 years.

Giving 100% isnt enough

Worked as a part time cashier. I always give every job my best effort, but it wasnt enough for Michaels. No matter how hard I tried, they wanted more. Very seldom heard a good word, just constant criticism. It got to the point I felt I couldnt do anything right. The assistant managers were ok, the manager was constantly criticizing. I am amazed I lasted as long as I did. Many days I left in tears. I have had other jobs, much more demanding and stressful than being a cashier and have never had this kind of criticism and negativity.

Needs serious improvements, but some of the people make it better

Cheap company that has been on a downward spiral, desperate to do anything possible to save money. Whether it’s buying cheaper or lower quality products, or cutting the custom framer employee budget so that only 1 framer works at a time instead of 2, or using customers art creations for the companies own ads, it’s rarely good news for this company and it’s employees nowadays. On top of it being nearly impossible to get a raise due to the billion dollar corporation “not being able to afford it,” there’s a lack ofmorale and motivation in the employees & managers, which is one of the key reasons as to why this company has such a high turnover rate.Luckily some of the employees and customers you meet there are absolutely brilliant, so much so that they can make your shift much better.

Job depends on the team

I worked at michaels for five years. Overall I really only stayed because it was convenient. I live with my family so I have very few expenses, however, even with those few expenses, it was difficult to make ends meet. Great job if you need a second job or a high school student needs one but not good for long term.

toxic

just like everyone else when I started at michaels it was the best it was my favorite job I loved all my co workers and all my managers but it felt like it didn't take long before it got really toxic. management changed and the environment got really toxic with everyone's hours being dramatically cut and employees were quitting left and right from the new manager making them all upset he forgets every conversation had with you so if you tell him something important you will just have to tell him again when its relevant and there are some weeks I have gone with zero hours.

Fun but not consistent

I enjoyed working here during the holidays when it was busy, but once the holidays ended there was no hours for the employees. Instead of giving hours to current employees they were having interviews and hiring on new people, which is pretty frustrating. Overall, good if you don’t need any money to live on or a high school student but they aren’t super flexible with hours either.

I have always enjoyed crafting and love assisting crafters with their projects. Daily we learn new things and always help each other out. Bets company I have worked for in a long time.

Good team

The team at my location is great, we all get along and fun environment to work in.However the job itself, you’re multitasking A LOT and going to be asked or assigned to do things not in your job description.. mainly due to understaffing and poor scheduling.Being on cash can be stressful, long line of customers, cashing them out as quick as you can, and trying to get “rewards” (phone numbers for the customers part of the rewards program) and management really pushing to get signups.. you’ll be having the answer calls for customers looking for items or online orders, and having customers coming in for online order pick ups and you might be the only one available to do the pick up.It’s a lot of juggling, if you can handle it you’ll succeed and if you are able to work well with your coworkers it will be manageable.A lot of 4 hour shifts.. and at minimum wage it’s barely worth the time and money.It’s a great stepping stone job and provides you a lot of opportunities for future jobs if you stay for more than 5months.The covid protocol is ok.. the screens at cash don’t actually protect or block you, there is no tap on debit machines, you’re constantly sanitizing.The company also doesn’t recycle or compost, which is such a disappointment and disheartening to see how much waste is actually produced.. in just one day. Your availability will also not be respected and schedules are supposed to be sent out 2-3 weeks in advance but really it ends up being a week or less. If you have no other responsibilities outside of the job then it can work out well for you but hard to juggle -

Horrible management and overall toxic workplace.

I initially enjoyed working at Michaels and soon came to realize how toxic the workplace was and how toxic the management was. Never once did my manager take into consideration my life outside of the part time job I had there and expected me to put school second to working there for minimum wage. Horrible environment and no respect for their workers.
