Casual Worker (Employé actuel) - Ottawa, ON - 17 décembre 2019
Worked here for like two months it’s okay I guess but there’s not really any incentive to stay... they pay barely above minimum wage and barely give you hours. It’s also just super boring there’s really nothing to do other than face bottles and work the cash. You’re basically just a body to them it’s just not worth it when you can get a better job for the same pay and more hours at any other retail place. It’s kind of just a waste of time
Poor management who find ways around favouring individuals despite it being a union environment.
Extremely poor scheduling and hours based on employers business needs and how they are used by individual store manager
Too many employees per store and constantly bringing in senior employees which has a negative impact on the hours offered to those with lesser experience
No accountability for work ethics
Poorly trained shift leaders who are given the job based on their seniority and not their management skills or work ethics....poor workers can be and are put "in charge"
Call in list for stores not followed and employees are called in based on managers relationships with other managers, employees relationships with person calling from store requesting replacement/temporary worker
Stores with greater number of staff (AA stores) have more workers with lesser experience and they are scheduled more hours per week, whereas an employee with more experience can stay at a store and be given lesser as the manager will keep them around for their reliability
its a good environment to work in such a company. Lots of job opportunities. its easy working there and the employee are also friendly. Security is also very good there and the management plays a key role in solving problems among the employees. its in India
I worked in the Ottawa logistics facility, the management believed that fixed term employees were not entitled to Stat holiday pay, claimed that the Union made a deal so fixed terms don't get osha laws protecting them. if you ask the union if you are with them they claim that fixed terms are not apart of the union despite paying union dues they will jerk you around from person to person without properly protecting or answering fixed term employee questions.
also recently they started hiring a wave of employees and turned down a certain group of returning employees surprise surprise the employees turned down just so happen to be the employees who were awarded back pay after being ignored for 3 months about the stat holiday pay problem.
also the union made a deal that fixed terms don't get two 15 minute breaks so while every other employee is getting ready to head home and are standing at the punch clock during the last 15 minutes of the shift, your still working because they get another 15 minute break, where the union traded the fixed terms last break away for whatever benefit for themselves.
aswell every employee gets the 1$ night shift premium, EXEPT fixed term employees
so those planning to take a fixed term position in the Ottawa logistics facility beware, ask them about the last 15 minute break the others get and you don't and clarify the night shift premium.
also they force overtime, its in the fixed term contract so afternoons work until 12 am, and back at 7 in the morning.
and yes I contacted the ministry of labor about the lcbo ignoring osha laws, - plus...
Great company to work for. Schedules are made very flexible to accommodate other part-time jobs. A great place to learn people skills, knowledge about products, and how to work with a team. Overall a great place to work.
Low morale. Incompetent management. Favortism runs rampant. Supervisors are not very intelligent. Very poorly organized workplace. Uses to be a great place to work now its very very poor and production is veey low as well due to incompetency and rock bottom morale.
The most enjoyable part of the job is the wonderful customers I get to meet and help everyday.
A typical day in the Customer area is spent stocking , cash and helping customers.. I must say that my customers bring me much joy especially when they return and tell you how much they enjoyed my recommendation.
Always learning something new and helping customers.
It's afar too easy to get locked into this place, with the higher pay, flexible schedules and simple work. It's almost too good to be true. Unfortunately the long term outlook and ability to create some semblance of a work life balance is completely non-existent.
I was a fixed term employee, working the end of November to the end of December. Serving customers on cash was fun, as some of them have a great sense of humour, and most were repeat customers so you have prsonal jokes with them. Putting stock away and facing the stock wasn't too hard. Hardest part of the job is not being familiar with products to help customers, and being shown too quick on how to operate the cash register, I wasn't shown how to do certain things at all. I found out about certain aspects from a friend from a different location. They count cash the old way, by hand. Management was pretty nice and she was very encouraging. Most of the staff were pleasant to work with. It was near Christmas so we would get free pizza.
Nice customers, pleasant co-workers
Not knowing about products, cash register training too fast, being short term.
Customer clerk (Ancien employé) - Ottawa, ON - 15 avril 2018
I had a great experience working with the LCBO. Though I knew it was a temporary position, I tried giving my all, I enjoy helping people and learning about the different alcohol. It is such an interesting world!
- Open up the store around 8am.
- Set up tills and count safe.
- Set up the days work plan/ staff breaks.
- Send off what we need for products.
- Unlock the doors and open up the store for the public.
- Most enjoyable is helping customers out with what they need.
Very organized, strong union, and good pay. The strong union means good pay and benefits, but also often means a very political work culture. Also, seniority rules, meaning being a better worker doesn't really help advancement and recompense, but merely being there longer promises these things.
Difficult to get hired for fulltime/permanent positions within LCBO. Fast pace and friendly. Uniform, dirty work environment, risk of theft, customer service, cashier, restock, clean up breakage and gather shopping carts.
