Horrible management and work environment, coworkers are great, pay pretty good But overall stressful

Stay away, stay far far away. They act like they are all pro mental health but watch out! If you take time off (paid for by benefits you pay into) upon your return, just when you are starting to feel better, they will ask you to reapply to your position and then “oh sorry, we’ve chosen someone else” Forget the fact that you were instrumental in meeting goals for RSP season, forget the members all love you...bye bye
I harbour no ill will for my coworkers who were like family to me, but management have no heart or scruples.
Would not recommend very stressful and nasty work environment!
This company has seen more people let go than all the places I’ve worked in my entire life!

Mentally unhealthy work environment

I am a spouse of a KCU employee, the work environment is mentally unhealthy and employees spend much their time tattling or trying to defend themselves to upper management.

If you qualify for benefits then the mental health costs can be covered.

May have to seak a mental health professional when done.

Going downhill fast

Kawartha Credit Union used to be a great place to work. It is now all about the bottom dollar and staff are expected to push product. When the CEO retires it is going to be very unfortunate, it will only get worse.

Recent changes have ruined it

KCU has recently undertaken some organizational changes that have not been for the better, starting with the introduction of a new COO that has his own agenda that contradicts the existing values of the company.
We recently switched to a new banking system- definitely necessary and long overdue. However, implementation was rushed and training was subpar, and member facing staff were left bearing the brunt of member frustrations with a complete lack of empathy from senior management. The health and wellness tips for those months were to “download a meditation app” and “ensure you’re eating healthy and getting some physical activity in”. The only problem was that very few people were working their usual 40 hour work weeks in that period. Right at Christmas time, I should add.
The best part was the complete lack of appreciation for all efforts. The new system allegedly created new “efficiencies” which lead to no fewer than 15 long-term exceptional employees getting fired. Thanks for nothing. And then a number of these jobs were reposted weeks later. Imagine the morale around the office. Not bad for a company that claims integrity as a core value. The rest of us employees got our choice between a Yeti mug and a KCU branded sweater so I guess we should be thankful.

Sounds like Kawartha Credit Union atmosphere hasn’t changed since 2000. Management was horrid, well the full-time tellers/loan/mortgage clerks worked, the men in management would go golfing. Many times leaving appointments waiting or missing them all together. Mortgage manager would belittle you and the banking manager was a witch, who made life miserable for you, if you took a day off due to illness or a death in the family. Nice to know times haven’t changed. And yes, they only promoted their favourites.

Gone down hill fast

Here’s an idea, let’s bring in a couple senior management people to come up with bad ideas to justify their new roles...sound good? Good. And fast forward to a company falling down hill fast. The people you work with are great, the management is a disaster. A lot of people being shown the door the last year, new and old employees. Very stressful, employees feel guilty taking breaks or lunch cause management frowns upon it. It used to be so good and now it’s so bad I know some of my fellow colleagues stress out at home thinking of coming in to work the next day. The people giving five stars are right for the time it was given it used to be a 5 star employer and maybe kcu can get back there but as of right now it is not a healthy place to work.

Was a good place to work but recently, not so much

While the Sr Mgt makes an effort to get to know each employee, the pay is decent and fellow employees are amazing, KCU has plummeted since the restructuring. Benefit options less then desirable as they once were amazing. The HR department had and continues to appear to have their own agenda with who they want to promote and if you have a death in the family or require time off for illness or surgery, you are shunned and blacklisted for any future consideration. Employee retention is hugely effected for various reasons; whether it’s a veteran or a relatively new employee, there are far too many announcements informing that someone is ‘no longer with the company’. Work environment is tense, pressure filled and not supportive.

KCU is an amazing employer. With a caring, nurturing work atmosphere and ample training and education along the way to encourage employees to grow and thrive within their company. With a supportive management team and amazingly friendly, helpful staff it is the most enjoyable work environment I have ever experienced.
