Culture became toxic and full of fear, good people let go for no reason other then management being afraid of them. Lots of great people work there but kcu is slowly getting rid of them.
Points positifs
Good people in non management jobs
Points négatifs
HR runs people into the ground, no employee support

I enjoy going to work everyday. They provide a great work/life balance and I couldn’t ask for a better place to work.
Management and staff are great and very understanding. The CEO is very involved and knows every employee. He even contacts you for any achievements, or working anniversaries to congratulate.

There are always things that people can find about a job that they don’t like. It happens at every company but I will say I have nothing worth complaining about with Kawartha Credit Union.

They pay very well and there are always opportunities for growth and learning.

I would recommend working here to anyone who is looking for a good job, with great pay and amazing people.
Points positifs
Great pay, great staff, work/life balance

If you're thinking of applying at Kawartha Credit Union, think twice, and then run in the opposite direction. The HR department is a group of biased, judgemental, and toxic individuals. Within the company there are systemic issues galore that I won't even begin to touch on here, and worst the CEO says he wants things to improve but continues to allow the HR department to discriminate against, and blacklist whichever employee they choose, for a vast variety of reasons. I not only have witnessed this happen to several other employees with whom I've worked over the years, but also sadly experienced this treatment myself prior to resigning. Branch employees & management tend to be complacent, and defeated when it comes to HR. There is a general rule of thumb within the company that you do not tell HR anything, for fear that it will hinder your career going forward. If you were to ask most any employee they would say they're either scared of, or strongly dislike HR due to the treatment they've received from them. It's like a group of bullies who are relentless in their quest to destroy a good employees motivation by overlooking them for every single opportunity simply because that employee is "blacklisted" for one reason or another.

This discrimination is rampant within the company. It's sad, and severely wrong. Rob, if you care what so ever about the employees that you pander to on every Skype call, you'll make the necessary changes within HR to stop the on-going discrimination.
Points positifs
Decent wage, in branch staff are nice, members are patient even with all the down falls
Points négatifs
Toxic HR department, discrimination, HR will stunt your career if you cross them. Essentially everything from the CEO down is an issue.

Our CEO takes the time and hosts all staff conference calls, to share the strategies and why such actions are important for the growth of the company. Also the senior management will share details on the many impacts that are affecting us like the generation preferences, technology, etc. Each year we anonymously complete surveys which are sent to a third party company (Aon), where 400 small to medium businesses submit their employee results and each company is then given a rating, but more importantly senior management is given feedback that is consistent and we discuss the strengths and shortfalls and together create a plan to improve in the highlighted areas. I don’t know about you, but I have worked in many different companies and not one has taken their employees feedback as serious as Kawartha does. What I can tell you, now having been through this process year after year, we see improvements in the areas highlighted from the year before. This would not be possible if we did not embrace change. That same change is what seems to cause upset. Change is hard, it’s never easy but I’m sure you can agree it is necessary to grow. Kawartha Credit Union is financially stable, we are innovative, we put our members needs first and we have tools available for us to grow in our positions. Advancement is possible, but just like our hiring processes. If you apply, you will experience this and notice we work hard to attract the best talent, and ensure we hire people who are emotionally and intellectually committed to the success of our credit union and our members. If you embrace - plus...

My experience thus far at Kawartha has been very positive. All the staff that I have interacted with have been kind, helpful, supportive and seem to deeply care about the success of the company and the people that work there. The work is interesting and challenging and provides a great sense of accomplishment.
Points positifs
The company supports work life balance

Kawartha has steadily gone downhill the HR department is horrible. Their treatment of people with mental health issues is frightening. It’s a very very sad situation now how much it’s changed

The actions of the HR Department are so disappointing.
Employee engagement is low due to HR behaviours.

From a lack of empathy, integrity and confidentiality to blatant bullying.

Things could improve significantly with a review of the HR department

Wish there was a better medium to get this message across without losing your job

I really enjoy the people I work with in my department and that is the saving grace coming to work each day. We work together as a team to make work easier. There are however, systemic problems at KCU as a company that are not being addressed and those are HR and training. There have been many changes over the last year at KCU and training has been incredibly sub-par, it doesn’t prepare us properly and therefore leaves us stressed when launch time comes. The training is always webinar after webinar after webinar which may save money in the short term but cost in the long term because staff are unprepared! They continue to launch things before they are ready and this has been a problem at the company for as many years as I can remember. Everyone in the company is consistently short staffed, not just my department, and this impacts the employees who are left to pick up the slack. The HR department is not easy to work with and tends to focus on all the wrong things like dress code violations, time cards and catching staff doing something wrong. They tend to be judgmental and small-minded and if they don’t like you, you can forget about moving forward in your career. Staff are getting burnt out and tired of the same old problems at KCU. There is a common theme in these reviews that is blatantly obvious and it would be nice for the CEO to take accountability and take action. There is no incentive pay or recognition at KCU so people who work extra hard are not rewarded which can be disheartening.

Kawartha is actually a great place to work. I have worked in some truly toxic environments before, and Kawartha does not even come close to bad, let alone toxic. I feel like I can go to my management with concerns and I feel listened to. My team is hard working and filled with genuinely kind people who put helping our members first. Company wide, I have found that my coworkers are eager to help when you approach them with a question. This is not a big company and it is going through a growth/change phase at the moment, which has been challenging for some employees and has left us a bit short staffed all around. Despite this, I am happy to work for a company that I feel cares about me, not only as an employee, but as a person as well.

P.S. I am a current, entry level employee writing this review if you were feeling it was at all suspicious!

The one thing I've appreciated most about my years at Kawartha is the sense of teamwork and collaboration that I've experienced here. Managers are here to help and are always encouraging new ideas and are supportive.

Amazing company! Hardworking, dedicated leadership. Strong, educated workforce. People working together to make the member service experience number one.

Yes, it's been a very difficult year and yes, there are things that hindsight has proven could have been done differently. Technology advancements have redesigned the landscape, made manual tasks unnecessary. Commonplace in this day and age. An unfortunate sign of the times...

Like so many things in life, you can only get out what you're willing to put in. The compassionate, caring, hardworking professionals at Kawartha are making a difference in the communities we serve.

Poor training overall. Very “catty” like atmosphere, there is always some sort of workplace drama. Everyone seems to want to take overtake certain peoples positions. Always understaffed.

I would not recommend this place of employment right now. For many years, I would have. Recently we lost the only inspirational leader the company had. There is a culture of tattletaling and toxicity here created by HR. No one can speak up here for fear of getting in trouble. This is a small company that has not advanced and has given power to the wrong people. It was time for me to leave.
Points positifs
Full benefit plan
Points négatifs
Mentally unhealthy work place

KCU is not a happy place to be right now. It’s true all workplaces have challenges and changes but KCU has a lot of problems that never seem to get better year after year even though staff speak up over and over. The CEO just admitted to prematurely firing over 15 long term employees in Peterborough. OOOPS! This is people’s livelihoods at stake!!! The COO was let go and he had good ideas and staff liked him.

Training is always lacking and last minute and leaves us feeling unprepared. Work keeps piling up on branch staff more and more and is incredibly administratively heavy. The HR department is judgemental, not confidential and lacks integrity. Everyone is short staffed causing pressure and stress. Good employees keep leaving for good reason.

Pay is lower than other financial institutions as there is no bonus structure in place and no reward/recognition program to earn other incentives. No flexibility in work arrangements & too much micromanagement.

While all jobs have their ups and downs I honestly feel like management genuinely cares about their employees. From a rigorous orientation session where the company's CEO spends time to get to know staff, to the open door policy of managers I have no plans to go work anywhere else.

Morale has plummeted. Just let go of one of the best leaders the company has seen in years who had great vision to grow the company. Senior Management team operates with fear based management. Toxic HR department that bully and intimidate employees, with no accountability as the CEO buries his head in the sand. Continue to lose great people. This is not a place you want to work right now.

Stay away, stay far far away. They act like they are all pro mental health but watch out! If you take time off (paid for by benefits you pay into) upon your return, just when you are starting to feel better, they will ask you to reapply to your position and then “oh sorry, we’ve chosen someone else” Forget the fact that you were instrumental in meeting goals for RSP season, forget the members all love you...bye bye
I harbour no ill will for my coworkers who were like family to me, but management have no heart or scruples.

Would not recommend very stressful and nasty work environment!

This company has seen more people let go than all the places I’ve worked in my entire life!

Kawartha Credit Union used to be a great place to work. It is now all about the bottom dollar and staff are expected to push product. When the CEO retires it is going to be very unfortunate, it will only get worse.

KCU has recently undertaken some organizational changes that have not been for the better, starting with the introduction of a new COO that has his own agenda that contradicts the existing values of the company.
We recently switched to a new banking system- definitely necessary and long overdue. However, implementation was rushed and training was subpar, and member facing staff were left bearing the brunt of member frustrations with a complete lack of empathy from senior management. The health and wellness tips for those months were to “download a meditation app” and “ensure you’re eating healthy and getting some physical activity in”. The only problem was that very few people were working their usual 40 hour work weeks in that period. Right at Christmas time, I should add.

The best part was the complete lack of appreciation for all efforts. The new system allegedly created new “efficiencies” which lead to no fewer than 15 long-term exceptional employees getting fired. Thanks for nothing. And then a number of these jobs were reposted weeks later. Imagine the morale around the office. Not bad for a company that claims integrity as a core value. The rest of us employees got our choice between a Yeti mug and a KCU branded sweater so I guess we should be thankful.

Points négatifs
Bad pay, fear based management
