HBC support their employees, provide training, give feedback, and help you advance in your career if that is your desire. Workplace culture is positive, friendly, supportive - a great team environment. I enjoy working with my group - learning new skills, in various departments and enjoy the interaction with customers. It is a learning environment, and very inclusive. Standing all day, the most difficult, but if you wear good comfortable shoes, this should not be a problem. You also get good exercise. Most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with colleagues and customers, helping everyone and learning new things. Grateful for the team I am with. They are great.

It was fun for the Christmas parties. Bay Day and Gala was fun. Some managers were promoting Auxiliary associates by their appearance and not seeing their work ethics.

overall company is ok but like I sed they judge by production and no rewards given when productions are met. No company christmas party for such a big well known company.but yet management get one. No bonuses for hardworking associates who try to meet the yearly quota of the year christmas new years time. All manualhardwork during peek season October throughDecember and January even if workergo over quotaevery year for the company. Only mamangrment is rewarded and get all the praise. No rewards for assocites workers. Just words while they get bonusesand chfotsmas parties..chrostmas gifts given are cheap.times.Almanagement and bonuses.nochristmas party for associates

I learned a lot while I worked at HBC (12 years Canadian head office) and I’m grateful for that but the last few years were extremely stressful.

The stress I experienced was due to a lack of a cohesive vision and direction on how best to achieve objectives and the ultimate goal. Very poor senior management - no empathy, no cultural sensitively, awareness and sincere desire to understand the Canadian market. Extreme lack of collaboration internally, especially the last three years of my tenure.


Not a lot of opportunities for growth.
What I thought were opportunities at the time were just projects or tasks that no one else wanted to do and I did not receive compensation for the extra responsibilities.

As a POC, I experienced several situations that were uncomfortable as it pertained to race. I did not receive any support from my manager when these things occurred - often in front of my manager, so they did witness these micro aggressions and sometime overtly racist comments.


While I worked at HBC there were no POC at the executive senior level for over ten years. In 2015, there was one POC who was an executive but they were let go (among others) within 10 months.


My Canadian colleagues were great for the most part but I did not experience the same warmth and belonging with my US colleagues.


All in all I have no regrets and appreciate everything I learned but I would be hesitant to recommend HBC as a great place to work solely based on the work culture. I sincerely hope that it has improved and wish all my former colleagues who are still there the

The employee credit card leads you to saving quite a lot however benefits only show themselves if you shop a lot. Management, quality of the workplace is sub par in every other aspect.

Made a lot of friends when I was at hudsons Bay . Most of my regular customers became life long friends as well as co workers if it wasn’t for relocating to another place I would still be there .

Terrible management. They treat you as if you are working in a sweatshop. At one point, I had to take some time off (two shifts) because my mental health was poor, and my manager shamed me and called me unreliable. Then a few weeks later, I was accused of stealing a deposit, only for them to find it a week later and they never told me. I had to ask if they found it. I received no apologies. We were constantly bullied by our department manager, and the HR, store and assistant manager did absolutely nothing. If you are part-time, they require you to be available all the time, although they will only offer you 8 hours a week (if you are lucky and they like you).

I guess the positives things ar if you devote yourself to the company, you could eventually become a manager without even having a high-school diploma. This is not my case, I am a university grad student. I have other priorities.


Also, they have some benefits, even if you are part-time.

I worked in the womens department and loved my time there. Like any retail job, it gets sterssful and overwhelming with rude customers/etc but overall my co workers made it worth it. Discount was good too and the hours could be a little more flexible but other than that I enjoyed my time there!

I worked there and the beginning was great as I worked there more, they are not flexible at all. I got in trouble for asking 3 min early because I had a plan I needed to get to. The most unconditional management. There is no training course and they manager sucks

Beaucoup de pression de certains chefs superviseurs si on n'ouvrait pas assez de comptes de crédit; même s'il y avait très peu de clients qui magasinaient durant le shift. Plusieurs chefs sont plus focusés sur les ouvertures des cartes plutôt que la qualité du service à la clientèle.
Dans plusieurs départements, l'ambiance du travail et les collègues sont relaxes, fun et aimables, tout le monde travaille ensemble, mais l'environnement peut être TRÈS TOXIQUE si les employés travaillent sous commission (surtout aux chaussures); les vendeurs doivent atteindre un quota, peut avoir des malentendus et BCP de gossips entre les vendeurs. Très compétitif pour les commissions et surtout les ouvertures de crédit. Certains forcent constamment aux clients d'ouvrir une carte.
Le good thing c'est que le rabais d'employé peut être appliqué même si les articles sont déjà en liquidation, mais pour avoir le rabais d'employé, il faut obligatoirement ouvrir la carte crédit la Baie. Feel like the store prioritizes more on the credit cards rather than their own employees' mental health.

it was a decent student job but definatly not a career job.
