I feel like working at Hot Topic is different from any other retail job. If you can obsess over a tv show or game or movie, working at Hot Topic can be a piece of cake for you. You can fangirl with the customers ad connect through the merchandise and it doesn't feel like working at all! My manager specifically has helped me acquire skills needed to advance in this company that can also help me in my other career (entrepreneur here).
Hours can be iffy
Hot Topic was great. I loved working there the years I did. Although, management of the company needs to start hiring way more helpful and respectful district managers.
amazing people, great environment, feels like home.
terrible district managers
I loved my co-workers, it was like family there. Management for the store was good, they cared for you and your well being. But the head of the Hottopic ruins everything. They don't care about you. They will fire you in a heart beat and not blink twice, it's a big company and they see you as a easily replaceable number. You're not a person to them. Working here is nice because your coworkers are great, but when you have to deal with anyone higher up then your manager, game over. Hours are horrible, you get at most 2 five hour shirts a week. Not worth it. Hottopic doesn't care about their employees.
Co-workers are amazing.
Head office and anyone hire up then your store manager treats you like trash.

Started out amazing, but when it came to the cliques in the work place it was horrible. If you werent apart of them, you were looked down upon and bullied, talked about when you werent there, shifts cut or really poor hours. And if you have a sick day with doctors note provided it was used against you. If you did your job correctly you were suddenly the bad person but the people who barley worked would be praised and win employee of the month. If you did your job correctly you would be taken advantage of and constantly having to do almost everything in the store even if five or six people were on the floor. You meet so many amazing people working there and amazing benefits to it but your coworkers if what makes it enjoyable and my location did not have that which ended up causing me to resign.
amazing customers, discounts
cliques, management, coworkers
I started working there near Christmas I loved the job then near New Years everything changed place was just so bad assignment manager tried running the show cutting hours making rumours up about other employees getting other managers and co-workers fired and talked behind your back if you weren't in the 3 trio you were an after thought in there eyes it wasn't fun it was the worst job i have ever had
Management was a joke
I absolutely adored my job at Hot Topic, the staff felt like family right away, I loved being able to sing and be silly with customers. I was very sad to that I was only seasonal help but I have made wonderful lifelong friends.
Great staff!! Awesome discount!!
Not enough hours
While working at Hot Topic i have become more experienced and comfortable working in a customer service environment. I am very punctual and hard working. I've always loved helping out customers and just making them happy and keeping them satisfied. It's great working with fun co workers but that has never interfered with me making sales or helping out a customer. The hardest part of the job was getting more shifts, they had many part time employees. The most enjoyable part of the job was definitely just always being around people and helping people find what they need, very rewarding.
discounts on product
too many part time employees
It is and excellent place to work! you can come in with just your casual clothes and name tag! the mangers are awesome the people they send from head office are awesome! the workers can be people you can get to know! though work is a double edge sword, you can get all your work done! You can all your work done be for the day is over. over all its a fun place to work!
the work and workers and fun
too little work and can get boring and slow
Customers, co-workers, and atmosphere highly desirable. Feel like part of the family. Drawbacks include receiving no breaks, insane turnover rate (don't expect to last longer than a year here) management is extremely harsh and expects absolute perfection for minimum wage with no opportunities for advancement, possible 25cent/hour raise once/year(not guaranteed) and no benefits. Scheduling is fair, but inconsistent. 30 hours one week, four the next. Not based on performance. Each employee is given shifts in four hour increments, then asked to stay an hour or two longer with no break. If you are a sales associate, your hours will most likely be spread thinly across the week with many short shifts rather than one or two long ones. Sales numbers heavily focused upon despite having no incentive to improve. Each worker is expected to be capable of all store tasks, which makes shifts more exciting and fun, you will rarely be doing the same thing every shift.
co-workers and customers very friendly
you are expendable, no job security.
I love working at Hot Topic, the people are awesome, it pays minimum wage but there are ways of advancing in the company. If you love music, or pop culture and enjoy talking about it to people then this is a great summer job for you.
room for advancement, fun environment
breaks are too short.
