Overall a fun place to work, the vibe is good and the hours are fine. They are typically over staffed so it’s a lot of trying not to bump into everyone else but it’s a lot of fun. You also get a great discount.
Points positifs
Discount, culture, good coworkers
Points négatifs
Management, scheduling.
Have you ever said to yourself, "It seems like it would be fun to work at Hot Topic?" If so, then you were right. Hot Topic is a great place to work, especially for students. They provide flexible schedules, (though not as many hours because of mall hours) and a great 40% off employee discount that works with ongoing sales, ensuring you get great prices. At both locations I worked at, the staff were incredible. Always a fun, happy, loving atmosphere and any employee would tell you that. Hot Topic is a safe space for anyone and everyone. Hot Topic is also a wonderful place for the LGBTQ community as well. The only cons are that it takes a while to move up, and hours aren't always so plentiful due to the mall hours. The products are awesome and there is always something new coming in, you won't mind actually spending money at work. The customer base is honestly amazing, you meet people from all walks of life and there are very few rude customers. People shop there because they want too, not because they have too and it makes a big difference.

Few Hours
The manager was hard to work with. They push their employees extremely hard to make sales, and maintain unrealistic sales numbers. Terribly low hours, would consistently get a single 3 hour shift a week. Manager showed clear favoritism over some employees.
Enjoyable, good culture. Good company but a little stressful with email pushes at checkout. Can be a bit daunting for areas that are in tourist areas and don’t get a lot of time off for holidays.
Hot Topic is a great place to work, with the staff being friendly and really having that family dynamic, to the workload being reasonable. Super fun job to have, but for anyone that doesnt have a manager position, you will not get hours outside of holiday season. Standard is 3-9 hours a week. Dont apply here unless you are comfortable with hours within that range

A typical day at work was fast paced and easy going ,it’s always an exciting and delightful experience with friendly co workers and experienced intelligent managers who helped the work pace flow with ease.
they accept who you are they willing for you to do work experience everyone is helpful . It's one of my favourite places for nerds of all kinds to BE, because there's really something for everyone. Animation, music, Netflix TV, video games - it's all there! And there's everything from collectables, to accessories, to apparel and Luckily, Hot Topic always has amazing sales and deals to help make those sales happen!
As a nerd, in VANCOUVER, of all cities, the environment of any Hot Topic is something I greatly appreciate. It's one of my favourite places for nerds of all kinds to BE, because there's really something for everyone. Animation, music, Netflix TV, video games - it's all there! And there's everything from collectables, to accessories, to apparel! My only downside is the feeling that the corporate minds behind the company don't really understand their audience... It's tough to push certain items when it's very clear it could've been 1) made better, or 2) made smarter. Luckily, Hot Topic always has amazing sales and deals to help make those sales happen!
A welcoming workplace, willing to help anyone who needs it, customer or employees. The staff is warm and welcoming, and management treats the staff like family while still maintaining a professional environment to grow and work in. 10/10 would work here again.
When I started at Hot Topic, I felt like I was part of the family already. I was accomplishing all my tasks with a smile. However, once the old management team had left to move on to better things and we got a new manager, the company suddenly felt like more of a burden. The manager and keyholder do not do their jobs at all, leaving the store a mess most of the time, or leaving it to sales associates who are not paid to manage the store.
One of my most favorite past work endevours would gladly go to work there again possibly longer as long as you can let everyone know ans such about when to be there and work together there would be typically no issues
The co-workers at Vaughan Mills are super fun to work with everyone is understanding and friendly. The management is super helpful and always ready to help when they can. Overall a really fun experience I wouldn’t have left but I had another job opportunity.
Points positifs
Fun and positive work atmosphere
Points négatifs
Ur on ur feet a lot but that’s basically all retail jobs
Working at the eaton centre was CRAZY. You'd have to watch out for shoplifters 24/7 while dealing with 100 questions and screaming kids all while trying to fold stuff and stock shelves
Learned a lot about customer service and how to be outgoing.
Helped me become more comfortable with interacting with people.
Not enough shifts to be able to live a comfortable lifestyle with.
Been there for years and have never received a promotion or raise.
Points négatifs
no hours to work
While long the day can be rewarding.
Some days it's fast or slow depending on the time of day.
Security tagging, folding clothes, price tagging, answering questions.
Management is nice but I have not met the regional manager yet. Direct bosses are chill.
The store gets odd people a lot but that comes with the territory. However the questions get repetitive after a while.
Not knowing where everything is is one of the hardest parts as we have stuff in different places a lot.
We, as employees, can dance, sing, be odd during work hours as long as it's appropriate.
Points positifs
Good discounts, easy dress code
Points négatifs
Limited hours, weird customers
I was so torn about leaving Hot Topic. I absolutely loved the customers & culture, but management was an absolute disaster. If they didnt like you they would write you up and give a verbal for the smallest things (ie: not walking fast enough) & make your life and job seem so disposable. There were multiple times that I went home from work crying because management took their problems out on me by doing things such as yelling at me in front of customers, questioning my intelligence, & just generally being rude. Some stores may have better management than the one I worked at, but I think the corporation as a whole creates these absolute monsters. My store had a revolving door of new employees because so many quit (management being the largest area of movement). I wanted to love this job so much but the bipolarity and childishness of management was too much for me to handle.
Points positifs
great culture

management, work & life balance
I enjoyed my time at hot topic, most of the staff was kind and hard working. communication was lacking though. my favourite part of the job was meeting new faces everyday and bonding over topics with customers.

Expensive
Its a great place to get along with employees and customers a like. they are good with making sure your work schedule doesn't convey into your life schedule. if you are into pop culture and enjoy working but having a good time, this is the place for you
My time spent at hot topic only came to an end due to a management issue. In which I was going to HR about. I absolutely loved my job with the company and would go back in a heartbeat
Points positifs
Its like a family
Points négatifs
Not always nice management
One shift a week that is 3hrs if you arent a long time sales associate. Terrible security, Company never makes enough money to give you any shifts. Not really any benefits. Bad job.
Hot Topic was FUN place to work at. Wish i could go back! The employees were really good and the customers were friendly. So the environment there was GOOOD!!!
