Managers give hours based on social status in the workplace rather than work ethic, nepotism runs rampant in hiring as well as promoting. Pettiness and cattiness among management leads to a toxic work environment where employees and customers alike are gossiped about and made fun of.|
40% discount on emo merch, no dress code
no hours, bad management, toxic work environment, no career advancement
I had so much fun working at Hot Topic. Coworkers are people who have similar interests and can help you learn more about certain topics. A typical day is helping customers find their size in clothing, as well as suggesting gifts for a customer's friends or family.
Good music while you work.
Hot Topic is a great environment! I’ve worked here for almost 2 years part-time and I have yet to be disappointed. The staff are fantastic, everyone is so easy to talk to and connect with. Customers are great for the most part, and we’re highly encouraged to start conversations about our shared interests with them. It’s a simple but fun job. They only offer part-time hours for non-managers, which is the head office’s policy, so I can’t complain. It always works out for me personally. My one nitpick is managment should rework how they train new staff. I was only taught how to fold a shirt and nothing else, I had to learn everything as I went along which was a little stressful, especially when I first got put on the cash register. I still learn new things to this day that I probably should already know but haven’t been taught. Overall I’m glad I get to work here, and I see myself being here for a long time.
great atmosphere, 40% discount, flexible scheduling
occasional rude customers, poor training

Started out amazing, but when it came to the cliques in the work place it was horrible. If you werent apart of them, you were looked down upon and bullied, talked about when you werent there, shifts cut or really poor hours. And if you have a sick day with doctors note provided it was used against you. If you did your job correctly you were suddenly the bad person but the people who barley worked would be praised and win employee of the month. If you did your job correctly you would be taken advantage of and constantly having to do almost everything in the store even if five or six people were on the floor. You meet so many amazing people working there and amazing benefits to it but your coworkers if what makes it enjoyable and my location did not have that which ended up causing me to resign.
amazing customers, discounts
cliques, management, coworkers
Customers, co-workers, and atmosphere highly desirable. Feel like part of the family. Drawbacks include receiving no breaks, insane turnover rate (don't expect to last longer than a year here) management is extremely harsh and expects absolute perfection for minimum wage with no opportunities for advancement, possible 25cent/hour raise once/year(not guaranteed) and no benefits. Scheduling is fair, but inconsistent. 30 hours one week, four the next. Not based on performance. Each employee is given shifts in four hour increments, then asked to stay an hour or two longer with no break. If you are a sales associate, your hours will most likely be spread thinly across the week with many short shifts rather than one or two long ones. Sales numbers heavily focused upon despite having no incentive to improve. Each worker is expected to be capable of all store tasks, which makes shifts more exciting and fun, you will rarely be doing the same thing every shift.
co-workers and customers very friendly
you are expendable, no job security.
