Hot Topic really does care about their employees. The managers that I have worked with have been very supportive of personal and professional growth. The only downside is, it is difficult to balance work and personal life. When the store is fully staffed, it's great, otherwise it's a bit of a struggle.
Points positifs
A company that cares
Points négatifs
Poor work/life balance

My manager was great, she wants everyone to succeed, she was a team player and everyone enjoyed working with her. She is a great leader. Overall, great place to work and expand your customer service experience.
Points positifs
Mall benefits, free drinks from certain vendors, etc.
Points négatifs
on holidays it was insane busy! But that is part of retail

Let me start this by saying that this was my intro to the adult world. This was my first job and I was there for over 2 years. I loved my work family and we always had a ton of fun together. Quick note, you NEED to know about fandoms and what we sell to work here. People are gonna ask you specific questions. What I have a problem with was upper management. As in the DM. Not the manager of the store. There’s very little recognition for your efforts from upper management. Lots of recognition and thanks for going above and beyond from your managers and coworkers, as we worked as a unit and if one of us succeed, that pushed the rest of us to do the same. I just left the company under a month ago and about 3 months before I left, the environment became toxic. At least that’s how it felt to me. I loved working here, which is what made me leave. That and my second job promoting me, something I never got in the two years I was there with consistent high sales. It’s a great starter job. But it’s hard to move up.
Points positifs
Awesome coworkers, discounts, potlucks
Points négatifs
Strict upper management

The job and the staff are awesome. It's a minimum wage job so it's only beneficial if it's just a side job or your a teenager with no responsibilities.

Great managers and fun to work with everyone. District Managers are awful and do not do their jobs well. You will learn a lot and everyone is helpful and supportive.

Hot Topic has a great, inclusive, and supportive culture. As with all retail, work life balance can be challenging and once you reach a certain level - advancement opportunities are few and far between.
Points positifs
Amazing discount, fun environment, great people
Points négatifs
Work/life balance, limited advancement opportunities

It was fun to work at but they didn't take into consideration the days I wasn't available and tried to schedule me then. Plus some of the employees made me very uncomfortable at this location which caused me to give up the job. A previous worker quit for the same reason.

Scheduling is minimal if an associate. Job pays minimum wage. This job is only good for people in high-school or those who have other means of income. Minimal advancement. Unrealistic idea that associates will want to work for this company as if it were their own without proper compensation.
Points positifs
Great coworkers/40% discount
Points négatifs
Unpaid breaks/ Few hours

Working there for over 5 years was incredibly rewarding. I met some of the most incredible people that are now friends. Work life balance is not as great as it could be, but overall I enjoyed my time,

Everyone always thinks that hot topic is a laid back easy going company, and that’s assuredly not the case. Don’t apply to work here if you aren’t great at time management, tasking, customer service and leading a team. Pay is average, expectations are sky high. Your comfort and ease of work is greatly impacted by your direct supervisor—I’ve had every shade on the spectrum, from horrible to amazing. Make no mistake, working for hot topic is much like running a small business on your own. You need to have a team working in your store that takes pride in their work and is willing to perform higher than their pay grade. Not easy, but rewarding when it works.
Points positifs
Discount, medical benefits for full time
Points négatifs
No work life balance, support from upper management is inconsistent

I worked at hot topic for a couple of months, and it was okay. I loved the people worked with, but the days were usually slow and the pay isn't great. Maybe a good first-time job, but employees never stay long due to corporate and the pay. Rarely had to deal with jerks! Just nice teens most of the time.
Points positifs
Discount, good people
Points négatifs
Slow days, pay

Minimum wage while working at Hot Topic truly shouldn't be allowed. There are so many tasks to take care of every single day, and the store is almost always busy. The backroom is so small and filled with so much merchandise. Trying to find shirts in the back is a nightmare.

The job was great. All my coworkers are nice and accepting. It just wasn’t my thing. I don’t like dealing with people. You do get a Karen every now and then. You’re managers do have your back though and will take over. Also it’s great for people in high school. Weekends are going to be most of your shifts. It most likely will be part time too. Also minimum wage. The main boss is intimidating but not in like a she hates me way. More like a this woman has her stuff together and knows what she’s doing. She’s honestly what I strive to be.Also fair warning the main boss has a great nose. You cantvape in the bathroom. She will know haha
Points positifs
They have you back
Points négatifs

Hot Topic is a good company to work for as a side or temporary job. It is definitely hit or miss when it comes to coworkers- you either love them or you hate them. Hours are terrible if you're not full time or in management. Customers are great for the most part. Upper management sucks, and they play favorites.
Points positifs
Flexible hours and employee discount
Points négatifs
Upper management sucks, low pay, barely any hours

District manager was always super rude and bullied a lot of the team. They also never really knew what they were doing. I loved working for the company but had way too many panic attacks over the higher ups expectations.
Points positifs
Coworkers
Points négatifs
Higher ups always made you feel like you were doing something wrong

Don’t get your hopes up to work here. What happens time and time again is someone puts 1000% in and then the company screws people over. I was part of the management team and only got $0.25 raise and no benefits. The company does not care about you or your well being and will just promote external hires when there is plenty of internal hires for the job. If you want to work somewhere and get completely screwed over then this is the place for you. You can work here for years and being “promoted” and still not see a salary increase, benefits, or more hours given.
Points positifs
Employee Discount
Points négatifs
No raises or benefits

Cool place to work and really fun, terrible hours and terrible pay. Made $8.96 as a seasonal key holder, which took me about 2 years to get that position. Fun high school job, wouldn't even be able to pay a car bill tho.

Overall a good job, but the pay doesn't make ends meet. If young and just need extra cash, perfect job. The company has a a set of morals they really strive to follow at all times. The people working there are awesome. Customers 90% of the time are awesome. It is a retail job though and so it can be strict for some aspects of rules. I can't blame them though. The employee discount is nice, and being able to buy clothes from there to then wear at work is nice because it makes selling the clothes to customers a bit easier.
Points positifs
employee discount at hot topic, torrid and box lunch. coworkers are nice. management is nice. 90% customers are nice.
Points négatifs
minimum wage pay
