It’s corporate health care. There are good areas and those less desirable. There are good lines and lines that can be toxic. A good manager and a good line can buoy you up against the Covid storm of stupid family members, but the reverse is also true. I have experienced more good assignments than bad...so that’s good.
Plenty of lateral movement available
You have to pay to park.
12 hour shift which ran 24 7. I learned patience in dealing with demanding clients. Learned how to take control of situations. The hardest part was dealing with anxious clients in stressful emergent situations. Very much enjoyed colleagues and as I was working part time had the option of picking up extra shifts if desired.
Great place to work when wanting to advance career. Management is extremely close with specific people employed there so creates a conflict of interest when trying to resolve issues. Management will record conversations without your knowledge and state they legally can as per the Criminal Code of Canada and submit it to HR to put on your file whether it’s a positive or negative interaction. Team Lead lacked understanding and rational of the position. Overall, Hamilton Health Sciences as a whole is a fantastic organization with room for advancement and ongoing education. The security department lacks many essentials to function properly as it is lead by very misguided management.
Awesome career advancement opprtunities
Management lacks understanding of job itself
As someone who was working a min wage job then coming to join Hamilton health sciences its like I struck gold most jobs you start new in this company you start as on call, no garenteed hours. Most jobs will start 22~23 an hour + 14% which puts you at 26 an hour. (the 14% is if you are on call) The jobs will have you working hard for your money, jobs like porting, cleaning, delivering mail, doing trades in the hospital, plumbing, construction etc working in the kitchen its a decent place for someone with no education and wants to make money and chill back Now the cons If you have a family and need hours this place might not be for you because like I mentioned before there's no garenteed hours you might be called in for 8 hours this week then 40 the next and no shifts for a whole week The managers arnt the and people LOVE TO GOSSIP. People love drama there everyone knows each other and talks bad about each other, I myself am porter I just deliver fresh towels and linen to wards and nursing stations and take the dirty linen down the basement, I transport patients to surgery and delivery equipment to where it needs to go Overall I would prob rate this place 7/10 good money good hard decent work but the people at certain hospitals make it awful, they talk bad and they love gossip they call in last minute and play games, you know the usual politics at a place, People love to pretend they work hard when they dont and love to complain.

Poor workplace culture as they are very understaffed for the amount of work that needs to be done and patients deserve better care. Did not feel heard as an employee when bringing concerns to superiors. Complete disregard for availability when scheduling.
Working there as a student the pay was fantastic! The job helped further my communication skills with patients and rewarded excellent team work. Unionized job gave comfort of job security.
Learned many AutoCAD skills Management is very nice and welcoming Dealing with too many requests flustered us in the workspace The most enjoyable part of the job is the people were the coworkers and how we helped one another.

- Multiple roles held spanning over 17 years - Experienced job advancements - Surrounded by wonderful, fun staff - Support staff have a wonderful bond and provide great support to every patient, and their families, that walk through the doors of the cancer centre.
Grateful to have worked along side wonderful staff, and privileged to have been part of a support team for cancer patients and their families
Complex hospital system with constant changes and transitions with competing priorities and demands. Overwhelming workload and lack of consistent support from leadership
salary and benefits
poor work life/personal life balance
Over the three years I have worked here, there have been ups and downs. There are clinics who have amazing staff who work as a team and then there are clinics and units with poor management. It depends where you go and who you work for/with. Overall, I recommend HHS as long as you don't expect quick advancement.
The typical day at work was exciting because everyday looked different, I had multiple projects at the same time, and at the same time had been doing minutes and setting up conferences, I learnt a lot about ethics and what to expect after the loss of a loved one, it was a powerful learning experience.
I spent six years in a contract role at HHS. I learned a lot and hope I contributed a lot. I have great respect for most of the people I worked with there, including my OD colleagues, managers and directors.
Being valued for contribution and service.
Great Team to work with. Healthcare team to patient ratio needs improving. Advantage of working in different sites of the organization when you join the Nursing resource team means you get to experience different practice setting each time
The Hamilton Health Sciences is an excellent employer. Through terminal cleaning of hospital rooms, I gained experience utilizing chemicals and cleaning agents to disinfect all surfaces of the room so the next person to use the room would not become sick. I also gained experience portering patients and supplies through the corridors of the hospital in a safe and professional manor. When portering it is important to utilize the convex mirrors in the hallways to ensure you don't hit patrons or equipment while moving a stretcher or equipment. I also learned the importance of using proper body mechanics when transferring a patient from a hospital bed to a stretcher.
