A fast paced environment. A trauma center with plenty of learning opportunity. The typical work day during the week would be having thirty to forty cases a day. Typical patient ratio would be one to three. A lot of elective cases involving same day surgeries. A lot of vascular, neuro, and general surgery, and ortho cases. A large percentage were critical care patients. Became an expert in pain management, using adjunct medications as well as narcotics. Able to manage and quickly respond to peaks and troughs in blood pressure, bleeding, airway difficulties, as well as other post op complications.
The typical off hours would involve multiple traumas as well as emergency surgeries. Often spent time helping out in ER, as well as taking ICU overflow patients.
During the off hours, there would be two nurses managing patients. The unit was operating twenty four hours a day.
Plenty of skills learned.
Excellent learning opportunity. Gave me a lot of knowledge and experience.
