Was lied to at interview and subjected to degrading behaviour
Was hired on with the promise of a certain amount of hours with a wage they could not provide upon starting date. I felt mislead and the management seemed to be thrown in to a position of power they were not equipped to deal with. With blatant favoritism for friends above other employees, the manner in which I was treated was appualling.

it's a job but not a great one
A typical day involves chatting about weed with the 30 people that come in to the shop and then being scolded for not selling thousands of dollars worth of product. I learned the cannabis industry has been hijacked by white upper crust dudes and that i'm better off buying from my local dealer. Workplace culture is okay. The hardest part is showing up every day when it's hardly worth the few bucks I'll make. The most enjoyable part is getting to talk about weed and learning quite a bit about plants and terps.

Not the same company anymore
I have mixed feelings about F&F. I've been with them since the early days of legalization. Back then, there was a real focus on culture and upholding our pillars. I don't know what happened, but that's disappeared. I'm holding out hope that they turn things around this summer. I've made some great friends working here, but it's getting to be too much so I decided to write a review.

Right after they got rid of the 'no one works alone' policy Merchants Row was robbed. Having 1 person working at a time made that possible. I thought they would reverse their decision and make employee safety a priority again but they didn't. They told us not to talk about it. Then they spun the incident in their favor so that we could have window covers removed. An employee was put in danger and F&F used it as an excuse to market better? I couldn't believe it was the same company.

This whole Coronavirus thing has made for some interesting days. The CEO made it clear he doesn't believe this is real, which explains some things. He goes on about 'building the boat while learning to sail' which is just like another cannabis CEO's story of 'learning to fly while building the plane.' So he's unoriginal, plagiarizes other companies and thinks Coronavirus is a hoax. Wild.

Great customers and store staff...slowly ruined by management
This is a retail job so expect the typical shift work and constant need to adjust schedules, not necessarily a bad thing if you have complete availability. Hourly is decent, better than most retail jobs, but the company has really rolled back benefits and reduced most to part time positions. They have the audacity to actually offer zero to random hours (likely less than 20...). Upper management controlled by people milking share holders for tremendous amounts of money. Way too many mangers, wasting way too much money, doing way too little.

Fire and Flower is like a cheap sports car, it's something that looks good from the outside, but it lacks energy and does not perform as promised.
Points positifs
It's a job, met some cool people
Points négatifs
mismanagement, wasteful company spending, a farce to cannabis culture

I get paid to talk about cannabis all day!
What a time to be alive! Not only is cannabis legal in Canada but declared an essential service!! Highly recommend working here if you are passionate about cannabis and willing to go the extra mile! The company is young and clearly like the other cannabis stores figuring it out as they go along. Entry level you are paid above minimum wage with Guusto rewards for recognition/appreciation. Store level management styles of course vary from shop to shop but all of my leads have always been supportive. They encourage consumption with our staff discount so we can speak more thoroughly about the products available in shop. Tough to break into full time hours so like I said if you are willing to go the extra mile that’s when the oppertunities start to present themselves. Much like any other company. You get what you put into it.

Dropped the ball with COVID-19
Let me start by saying that some of what this company does is straight up illegal. For starters, my manager pressured people with flu symptoms to come back to work after they took a day or two off. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO QUARANTINE FOR 2 WEEKS. So when we had a positive case, they didn't shut down the building. We just spent a couple hours disinfecting it and reopened the next day. People with symptoms not allowed to take time off because we are short staffed. If you tested positive, you get 1 week off. that's it. No hero pay for us, either. Just show up or lose your job.

Customers don't even know what they're getting into by buying weed. Do you want a side of Coronavirus with that?

It was great, until it wasn't.
F&F started out as the best job I had ever had. I was drinking the koolaid. They get you with the "team" talk and hyper inclusiveness. But it's a sham. It's a retail business out to make money, like any other. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU. In the upper echelons F&F went through a transitionary phase over the winter that wasn't disclosed to the lower rungs. This transitionary phase had all of the directors and above who cared about people (including an HR director who was probably the best in the business) fired. This was because they weren't towing the line; insisting that retail staff should be treated better, which rubbed against the corporate grain. At the retail level, everyone is expendable. Other reviewers have said that promotions within are common; they're not. I know for a fact management is hired based on cronyism: if they are friends with an exec, or someone's husband, they get the job. Meanwhile cannista who've been outstanding for 16+ months are still cannista making 2 bucks over minimum wage today. It"s a greedy corporate mess, basically exactly what legalization advocates were afraid would happen .

Not a rewarding or pleasant experience
Was totally mislead during the interview process with big talk about bonuses and opportunity to lure us in. Never saw a sign of any of that. Was given the impression the company was far more stable than it was internally. Company was constantly changing hours for the stores, policies and procedures. Many decisions made no sense whatsoever.

Leadership was lacking and unapproachable. They acted like they were better than everyone and could never speak to anyone and was told, "sorry, that's not in your pay grade" and given the impression that senior leaders were not accessible or approachable. My ideas were often stolen and credit taken by leadership as I was not allowed to reach above my direct district manager.

Handling of the Covid-19 epidemic was confusing. Formal protocols issued by the company about accepting cash stated we were to not take cash, but mid-range district leadership verbally stating we should ignore that formal directive and take cash anyways to improve sales potential. They were unwilling to put that in writing when they got push back from retail store staff on the front lines. Decisions about retail front line exposure to Covid-19 being made by people working safely from home.

Like most legal cannabis retailers, they didn't seem to understand how to compete against the black market, with pricing through the roof in the chase for profitability. Store staff had no input into anything, were just told what to do. Difficult to feel you are part of anything or have any input.

Would give a 4 on a scale of 10 for leadership, support and guidance

Just Roll with it
The biggest thing I've learned with working at f&f is you need to be flexible. The cannabis industry is changing all the time therefore shop processes change rapidly. There are times when there isn't enough clear communication between departments and other times when it is adequate. Growth opportunities are based off of talent not tenure, as they promote first from within and than hire outside if it's not a perfect fit. I have learned SO much about cannabis, leadership and myself since working here. What keeps me smiling is the people. My team and district manager are incredibly supportive and having the opportunity to share my passion daily with consumers is just unreal! The discounts also a great bonus!

The Honeypot
Management ruined cannabis culture for me. Greed and lies. I saw everything from the robbery they hid from the media like harrassments, to the unsafe work practises during covid.

Excellent Company to Work For!
With sixteen years of corporate experience under my belt I often felt like I was banging my head against a ceiling trying to get ahead of more tenured but lower performing managers. Fire & Flower has given me the ability to grow, be heard and take high reward risks that I was never given able to experience before.

If you want to like to play hard but work harder, this is the opportunity for you!

Excellent for part time work, lots of flexibility. You get what you put in.
I've been working part time with this company since legalization. While the company has gone through lots of changes in that time, they have been reasonable for the most part. Flexible enough to allow me to go to school while working weekends - quite accommodating when exam season begins. As other reviews have mentioned, there are some issuses with communication between upper management towards individual stores. For the most part, the store is quite self sufficient and employs people that are willing to adapt to a fast-paced environment. Wage is a few $$ above minimum. Training is hefty and ongoing but extremely rewarding. Finally, the staff make this place worth coming back. Inclusive environment for all types. Overall, would recommend!
Points positifs
Above min wage, good people, lots to learn, heavy emphasis on education
Points négatifs
Hour cap for PT, keeping up with government changes in a new business

Don't waste your QCW at this high school musical
I've met cat herders that are more organized than what goes on at this company. You would have an easier time shoving your head in a wasp nest than trying to understand what goes on at the upper management level.

Toxic, unorganized mess
Management Is the most pathetic display of hiring your friends and not the most qualified person for the job. There are NO opportunities to grow if you are not a manager. You WILL be fired over a petty or even undisclosed reason by a manager who does not like one thing that you have done. This was proven to me through the actions of multiple managers firing many (5) of my coworkers and peers as well as myself for the same reason: you were fired because I dont like you. The work environment is gauged at being car salesmen for cannabis, and not about providong education first in the slightest. The education you are taught to provide is solely to sell as much trash product as possible. Very low quality product, very low quality people, extremely low standards for management, and hypersensitivity is rewarded with praise. My overall experience with fire and flower was that if you have any opinion about the business or the company it needs to be private, as voicing any concern or malcontent will have you terminated without justified reasoning. You will have to spend 3 months training to for a position they will inevitably fire you from due to very clear overstaffing that could have been avoided months before. It is a could be business, not a company that could ever be a good source of livable income. Most hours you will have available will be filled by managers deciding overtime for them is better than you paying your insurance or rent that month. Laughable position, I would literally never recommend anyone work here, not my worst enemy deserves this incompetance. I literally do not - plus...

Worse company I have EVER worked for hands down
This company is ran by a bunch of morons. The manager at the south red deer store has no management skills and thinks she owns everyone that works there. She handles it like she’s the mom and it’s her way or no way. Senior and Ground staff fearful of moving or saying anything because they will get written up. It’s a gong show company. The company is a convince store for cannabis. They should be ashamed .

I love my job and hate my company
Selling weed is super fun, but working for FIRE & FLOWER is super painful. Corporate culture is excessively toxic, and motivated purely by greed. Executives lied to managers and told them that the company would be different, inclusive, and open to new ideas. In reality, they are just like any other massive corporation. Promotions are based on what kind of relationship you had with leadership prior to joining FIRE & FLOWER and rarely based on merit, or experience. Staff can’t afford to shop at their own shops, and prefer to source their cannabis products from the black market, as the companies is constantly cutting hours and the staff discount is insulting. If you do decide to work for FIRE & FLOWER, try to work in a shop as far away from the Shop Support Centre (SSC) as possible as this will alleviate a large amount of the harassment you will receive from corporate.

Lip Service Corporate culture (Avoid at all costs)
The pros: amazing branding, stores are gorgeous. Most of the in store managers and co workers are excellent people who truly care about the culture.

The cons: constant broken promises. They haven't figured out their business model yet to adapt to the volatility of the market and staff bare the brunt of this. Cut hours (even for "managers") complete lack of coherence in sales, supply and managing customer expectations.

Regional manager is one of the greasiest a-holes I have ever had the unpleasant fortune to meet, absolutely nobody in the company likes what he does and unfortunately a lot of people have left because of him.

The training culture is a bit odd, you have a bunch of trainers who are managers at other stores, completely unprofessional people. Doling out knowledge that you see is not in place, in store, within your first week.

Most startups have hiccups but this company seems fine in focusing on branding and not so much ensuring the culture is reflected in the workplace. It becomes clear most of these folks wouldn't last a month out in the regular work force and corporate culture is quite insulating. I do not even think they have any idea of how poorly they are running things.

Wages are modest but if you can get more than 20 hours a week, good luck.

oh and the "you will never work alone" model of staff safety goes out the door the moment the hours get cut. Totally unsafe work environment for female employees to be left alone like that and sadly it will take a major incident before they are forced to fix this.

Corporate Kids
At first was amazing. After a few months, promises made during training where not followed through with. Employee safety was the first to go. Executives are children playing adult. The area rep uses Crude language while in shop making others feel uncomfortable & plays favourites. Make sure you kiss butt with her.
