flexible hours and nice co-workers

Avis en vedette

i worked in cash so it got pretty boring standing at a till for a long period of time. at my store management was actually pretty good, i really liked my supervisors. i loved my coworkers, they're super friendly and helpful when you don't understand. just like any grocery store job, it got super repetitive and boring, plus they didn't pay you overtime and rarely gave raises. my supervisor was super flexible with my hours though so that was great. also, customers can be pretty rude.

Points positifs

flexible hours

Points négatifs

repetitve

Stressful, fast paced, boring,

Shifts as a cashier are boring and long. You deal with lots of different people. The majority of the customers are rude and they put down your spirit. Working on busy days was difficult and overwhelming especially when only 2 cashiers were present, the line ups would be long and customers would be very impatient. Also, you have to remember/look up the PLU codes for produce which is VERY stressful, especially when there are customers waiting in line. For example, there are so many different types of apples each with their own code. If you accidentally put the code of a different apple the customer will become very annoyed, and it sucks because they don't understand how hard it is remembering all the codes - especially when almost every apple looks the same. Some customers don't remember what type of produce they chose. I learned about managing a cash register, dealing with unhappy customers, communicating with people regularly, and overall a typical work environment. Overall, the job is easy but the customers you deal with make it harder. If this is your first job, you will make a lot of mistakes but it's okay. Don't let a customer dishearten you.

Points positifs

co-workers

Points négatifs

No benefits, memorizing PLU codes, rude customers, stressful

Typical grocery store

Worked as a supervisor for front end. Constantly dealing with rude customers. Positive was that most times there was more than one person at customer service, so we always had backup.

very slow paced easy going job

shifts at fairway are enjoyable but become very repetitive extremely fast, i learned how to be easy to talk to, how to be a people pleaser with words, how to deal with an emergency situation and how to act on it. management is just wonderful at fairways, all of the staff and supervisors are very fun to work with and very comforting and helpful when they need to be. the hardest part of the job would probably be standing on your feet for extensive amounts of time can get very sore, and the most enjoyable part would be talking with your co workers in small gaps of doing nothing

Wouldn't recommend

Having worked there for a long time I would not recommend this job unless you only plan on being there for the short term. Management is incompetent in relation to the setup of things. Paychecks are done by actual cheques rather than online, or at least they were when I left. They are flexible with hours which is useful when you are in school or want time off, which is one of the few positives. Many of the customers are rude and idiotic and over time really degrades your spirit and makes you not care about customer service. My co-workers for the most part were fine to get along with but some of the cashiers called for assistance way too frequently for minor things, which made it hard to get anything done. They also didn't often schedule enough people, or people would call in so sometimes you would close with 2 or 3 people, which also made it difficult to do anything.

Pt cashier

Not what I expected, rather slow paced Not many hours given to make it worth keeping the job. Store is in rough shape a bit run down, must be nearing a renovation? Not a good match for what I needed to support my children.

Relaxed paced work place, but bad work environment

The work environment is very unsanitary, although it is an easy job. Management is okay, with relaxed supervisors and easy tasks. I was trained on Cashier and Grocery but was the only one being called upfront considering I was not the only one trained on Cashier. That goes to say, management needs improvement, they don't know have good record of who is trained in what department.

First job

I started working here about 4 years ago, it's been a good first job but I'd like too move onto something else. I have learned alot about cooking and dealing with people in a customer service environment.

Great place to work!

Very good working conditions, regular hours, awesome first job for someone with no experience as you are trained while on the job. Easy job supportive management staff. Family oriented company - you don't feel like you are just a number. Over - all great experience working here!

Avoid if possible

This company cares about profit, not employees. Coworkers are pleasant, management is a joke. The cheapest place you will ever work for and never see a raise. Min wage, no staff discount, high staff turnover. It is a dump. Your hours are always changed last minute and they expect your loyalty but don't give it back. Just avoid the drama and work someplace else that shows they care about you.

Relaxed at times but stressful

Depending on your store's management it can be a relaxed environment. Overall, they're pretty flexible with part time availability. Often times it can get stressful when busy, and holiday hours are different from other grocery store chains. Often times, Christmas is extremely busy as Fairways is the last grocery store chain to close and we get all the other customers that couldn't reach the other chains.

Simple and Slow

As an ESL student, I had a good chance to improve my English skill when I worked in a local supermarket. I leared how to communicate with local people.

Day in the life of a cashier

A typical day at work includes greeting customers, scanning groceries, entering PLU codes, bagging groceries to the needs of customers, counting money, almost constant small talk, keeping a neat and tidy till, and other random chores around the store. Some chores include sweeping, putting away products customers don't want back to the shelves, collecting baskets, making sure there is sufficient supply of plastic, paper, and reusable bags at the tills. I have learned many things but the most important is good customer service, always smiling and respecting others. A downside to seeing so many people in a day is they aren't always happy and can take some anger out on you. I've grown a thicker skin thanks to these customers and try to give them more positivity in their day. Management is very understanding and caring to their loyal employees. They keep a very positive working environment and are always there for you. The staff is great. I've made so many great friends that make my shifts so much more enjoyable. I must say, some supervisors do pick favourites though and some are off till more than others. Hardest part of the job at first is getting used to the fast paced environment and trying to memorize the codes, after you're more comfortable the shifts get much easier! The most enjoyable part of the job are seeing the "regulars". Some customers always make sure to come to my till and they great me by my name and like to catch up with whats been going on in my life. It's nice to see a familiar face that cares.

Points positifs

Great staff, flexible hours

Points négatifs

Rude customers, not much room for promotion

Great place to work

If you like a family environment this is the place to work. Long hours, standing on your feet all day can get tiring, make sure you have good shoes. Best part of this job is the family environment, everyone cares for each other. They make you feel like family.

Points positifs

Great starter job but very slow

Fairway Markets is a great place to work if you're looking for a starter job, the issues with working here lie with the minimum wage and no benefits, the job itself is also very slow paced most of the time so you will find yourself with nothing to do most days.

Points positifs

Light work

Points négatifs

Boring, 9 hour shifts (with hour break)

Just don’t.

Over the last few years management, or lack there of, has really gone down hill. No one has any idea what they are doing at Head Office. Policies, or lack there of, are not enforced and/or changed on a whim. Fairway Market used to be a good company to work for but not anymore. Company loyalty is not appreciated. Staff is overworked and underpaid. For the last couple of years raises were only issued when minimum wage went up, so if you were already a minimum wage employee, you never really got a raise. Raises for department managers were stingy, as low as 30 cents. When I first started at Fairways, about 6 years ago, I received 3 raises in one year. They just don’t do that anymore. Workers are hired as part time and scheduled 36-40 hours a week and not offered benefits. While Fairway Market does offer benefits you pretty much have to beg. At the store I worked at pretty much the entire staff was miserable. People who show no work ethic walk all over the manager and the manager puts up with it and the rest of the staff suffer. The positives of working there are the customers and most of the staff.

Points positifs

Nice co-workers and customers

Points négatifs

Management
