The staff at Extendicare Peterborough show a lot of love and respect to the residents. That was what kept me motivated.The menu has great value and there is always plenty of food for hungry individuals.
Good menu items for residents
My only issue was that there wasn't enough hours for me to earn enough to live on. Part time is great but not when you live on your own. I would 100% go back and stay if I had enough hours

Not enough hours
The facility I work for is not a good place to search for a job. Staff turnaround is ridiculous. Wages are the bare minimum and job roles are overloaded. Each department has the bare minimum for staff with too many duties. No moral. Staff argue constantly with each other and too many micro managers. Management does not deal with any major issues so the environment in there is chaos. No raises. No recognition. Upper management does not acknowledge staff when they visit. Definitely not invested in their employees one bit.

was an on call position in a very busy facility for those who could no longer care for themselves, served breakfast lunch and dinner stocked supplies and did dishes help keep the workplace safe

I worked pretty weird hours, one shift would be from 7 till 11:30 and the other shift would be from 3:30 till 7:30. I rarely worked both shifts in one day. I really liked working there, helping the cook get ready for the meals and cleaning up from the meals. I lived quite far away from the job so the hardest part would be getting up at 6 to be at work on time!!!
I have worked in many jobs where employers have questionable work ethics and will be hard to enforce fair employee policies especially with no union. This is a huge step-up as I feel secure in doing my work duties safely and that more opportunities of a concrete professional employer-employee relationship with clear policies and standards. Great work ethics and growth can be recognized with the knowledge and application of the employee handbook and company policies. The workplace can always be improved as most workers who have been there for a very long time can be resisting to changes of work flow and system, technology and policies. The resistance of change can dampen the workplace in an archaic and one-dimensional environment. My job entails fast-paced and efficient multi-tasking duties. It is time constrained, must be able to work independently and prioritize daily duties. It can be very stressful but the result/end-of-the-day can be very rewarding as cooking quality food for an older generation while practicing and challenging work ethics can feel immensely gratifying. One big problem being faced now is working full-time hours with no benefits as a casual worker for more than 3 years. Because I work casual I feel overwhelmed when pulling night then morning then double shifts with short notices for months at times. Great money but personal life has suffered. Comes with most jobs these days and this is one them. I have built trust and dependability towards my employers and employees that I feel has not been recognized, as of yet. I love my job, I get to learn and experience something new every day it makes my job challenging while rewarding in the same time, I have wonderful team mates and a experienced understand manager, knowing every ones need which make the job challenging and meeting new residents by fulfilling there needs makes my job rewarding .

This type of job roles around "clicks" your either in or your out, as childish as that is and high school it sounds, its the sad truth of these unions, Choose your battles carefully and words especially to the right people. Great pay, not such great hours depending where you sit with seniority
-I would show up just after breakfast and be assigned to a certain station in the nursing home kitchen. I would work on it until lunch, serve lunch, take an hour long lunch break, and be assigned to a different task in the afternoon, usually packing to go meals for the community charity "Meals on Wheels". I would take a half hour afternoon break, serve supper, and then get materials ready for the breakfast crew the following day. -I learned how to prepare meals of different texture, how to work with multiple staff members, and how to be a reliable, trustworthy co worker -the hardest part of the job was keeping up with the rhythm of the other co workers, all while making notes (for college, as this was an internship) and learning how everything is done. -the most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the smile on residents faces when they enjoyed their meals, or when they met me and were happy to have met me.
Doing the work is no problem. It's the people you work with, your co-workers only speak 'their' language even though its not allowed, and management yells at you for trying to enforce the rules. Management thinks they know everything even though they never stay late enough to see who does what and who doesn't. Hardest part is the continuous bashing with co-workers, always talking behind your back, and NOTHING gets done; management doesn't take the time to learn your name. It's like thanks, I've only been working here for 5 years so no big deal, maybe you'll get it next year...

Very physically demanding job, it is all about the residents and making sure they are happy and comfortable
First off I would just like to say I enjoyed working for Extendicare. The people I worked with were great and got along very well. I didn't however learn many new things but grew stronger in skill as I went along. Example broadening my inventory and stock skills, higher communication skills, and how to execute good quality food on time and organized. I also worked as much as I could. Although I was full time I still took on the responsibility of staying overtime. The most enjoyable part of my experience working for Estendicare was the people I worked for (the residence) that lived there and I did what my passion is which is cooking.

it was a great place to work but not when your favoring other employees and making others work harder then the rest
It was a great to work for the 5 months I was employed, other than my supervisor at the time, Eileen Watts. She favoured girls in the kitchen and the ones she didnt, we worked hard for our money at 11:02/hr.
